So he got hold of a ak-47 and then shot himself with it.Wouldnt it been easier just to get hold of a handgun as you dont normally just pick up a ak-47 on the streets.
It's as easy to get a hold of an AK as it is any other rifle. There is noting really special about the civilian model of the firearm. It shoots a 7.62x39 cartridge, which packs less of a punch then BAR in .30-06, BARs are common hunting rifles, which where once military service rifles as well. I have a .300 win mag rifle I use for hunting, .300 win mag is 7.62x67 sized cartridge.
I know the ak-47 is easily got hold for an assault rifle but maybe it is different in the uk but its alot easier to get hold of a rifle than an ak-47 as any kind of semi-auto assault rifle can not be legal in the usa can it?.

Some guy on 4chan was there too.

So, some guy shot up my school today. Only managed to kill himself, but still, holy shit. You never really think about these things happening at your school until they actually do.

How was your day, /r9k/?
Yep, you're not alone in broadcasting this over the internet.

OT: I've never experienced anything like this. Nor do I want to. I love my countries anti gun law.

Nothing like this, but two guys I went to school with died.
One I didn't know died of cancer, and a friend died from something with his brains.
Pretty weird walking around and seeing random people cry about someone they don't even know.

What is the difference between that and my BAR in .30-06? Aside from the .30-06 being a much more powerful round that is. Nothing, well except one having present military connections. Not that the other was never used by the military because it was.

Automatic weapons are banned, semi-auto weapons are not. There issue is that there is no such thing as an Assault riffle. That's a class of guns made up so they could put anything that looks "military" into it. It's like anything that shoots the .50 BMG. Because the military uses that round for sniper applications it's all of the sudden become an evil round that only dangerous people want to use.

Hell half the weapons they stick in that category fire smaller rounds then that BAR I keep referencing.

If this is blamed on video games and not the availability of firearms (amongst other things) I will be both unsurprised and hugely pissed off.

Anyway, that must have been shit a day.
The only thing to blame this on is the kid that did the shooting, if he didn't have a gun he would have used pills, or a knife to kill himself.

This "it's the availability of guns that makes people into killers" crap is just that: crap. People have been killing each other ever since we learned that rocks can be used to crush skulls.
thats not the point the availabilty of guns is what increase the death count rocks can't kill dozens of people in a second from 200+ yards
You sir, have not been using the right rocks then!

Sorry miss type on my part what i meant was its easier to get hold of a handgun than a rifle .Also if thats true and you can legally get semi-auto weapons that is kinda weird. As i always supported the right to have arms in america. But the reasoning behind it was for protection or hunting. If you can acquire an assault rifle then if you cant kill an animal in 3 shots "burst-fire" then you should give up hunting animals and if you think you need a weapon like the ak-47 to defend your home you seem to be expecting a squad of armed soldiers to kick in your front door

Similar but a man took our office secretary hostage with a knife. I live in Canada so its difficult to get firearms so thank god for that cause if he had a gun this would of been a lot worse.

Funny enough, last week, last Monday; most people took the day off school because of surfacing rumours (spread courtesy of Facebook) that a guy was going to threaten to shoot up the school. You know what's funny? I had a cold that day. That's why I didn't go. At 2pm, dad called from work and asked if I heard anything about a kid threatening a shoot up. My lucky day?

Cops arrested the guy before anything more could be said. Arrested him the Sunday night before, and it was just for making the probably-too-serious threat. Funny enough, he was 21, and this was a high school, so... it seems an odd target.

Either way, nary a bullet was shot, so I'm happy for that.

EDIT: I should point out that I went to a gun show on Sunday (not the Sunday buddy got caught), and there was an awesome crossbow for sale, for $175, and a guy had an amazing composite bow that he offered to sell us for $100, $25 less than its starting price.

Ooh, and knives with Damascene patterns. I think I liked those more than any gun there. I don't know if they were true Damascuss steel (since I'm pretty sure it's hard to get a hold of wootz, and you would need the process those scientists that tried recreating it had), but damn if they weren't beautiful.

Nothing quite as intense as a school shooting, but when I was in fourth grade, they found two pipe bombs that had been planted on the school field. Nothing really became of it, and no one was injured, but bomb squad had to come in, shuffle everyone into the school library (which was hard, as there were only about 115 students), and then do controlled detonations.

Yeah, I can't wrap my head around how he got into school with the thing either. Did he hide it in a guitar case? I wonder if anyone was around when he did it, and how they feel.

I sometimes wonder about suicide... I could never hurt myself though, I'm just too skiddish. I'm a bit of a wimp really; funny how that endangers me from the public while protecting me from myself.

My high school had a trap shooting team when I was there, I don't know if they still do it anymore or not. There were very specific rules in place for how your gun was supposed to be delivered the day of the meet.

One of the other kids on the team who's mother was a bus driver for the district thought she was above such rules and decided to bring her son's shotgun to school without a gun case. She simply laid the gun broken open over the center console of her Jeep and then parked in the school parking lot. We were put into lockdown for about an hour while it was explained to her that wasn't they way things were supposed to be done and that was pretty much the end of it.

Other than that incident the only time we were ever put into lockdown they called them 'practice drills' even though everyone knew they were just using it as an excuse for the police to use drug dogs to search the lockers.
something like that happend at my school

the kid was deer hunting over the weekend and forgot to take his rifle out (it was still in the case with a lock on it) The principle just asked him to open the car so he can hold it in his office for the rest of the day(perks of a single A school) and told him not to do something so stupid agian.

Sorry to not reply to my own thread, but I used the rest of my day off to do laundry. Crazy crap. I think other people already covered this, but: he only shot himself, no one else, and they have no idea why yet or how he got an AK47. They do know that he ran around smiling at people and saying "Woohoo!" And he was a mathematics major.

Edit: Forgot I could just edit the first post, so now this one is kinda repetitive. Anyway, thanks for the concern, and to justify calling it a shooting, he fired like 6 shots out into the open (albeit not at anyone) and another couple inside the library before killing himself.

The guy was like: "If i'm gonna shot myself at least let's do it in style, not with a punny handgun."

I too attend the University of Texas and live in Jester and was preparing to leave for my first class of the day when the lock down began so I just went back to my room and got lots of extra sleep. Thus far, I have not seen any attempt to draw a correlation to Video Games, but I suspect such an accusation will come.

So I want to know, Escapist, have you ever experienced anything like this?
yeah, about 10 years ago in my high school, I found a bomb-threat written on my school's bathroom wall.

it said: " = BOOM!" it was...unsettling.
