I find it odd that he'd use an AK-47 to shoot himself.
I mean, why an AK?

Why not a shotgun?
Or a handgun?

Using an AK just seems...bizarre.

Of course, I'm also curious as to why he did it in the first place.
I was close to that once when I was younger, but I couldn't help but think that I'd just be quitting. Just giving up, when there was so much I didn't know or experience. It was like quitting a job I didn't even have. So here I am, married, with a job I love, and loving life.

I can't get my head around doing something so...final. So irreversible.
He must have been really hurt, or really lost.

Wow, bloody hell, don't get shit like that here. Nothing majour like that as ever happened to me.

I don't think it'll get blamed on video games, though.

Wow, thats something you don't see everyday.

Worst thing that happen to my school was the DC sniper spree. Most of the snipping happened 10 miles away from my school, and we were locked down for a good 3 hours before being let out early.

The who lock down lasted until the snipers were caught, which roughly lasted around a month. Pretty scary when one student in another school got hit.

What do you think possesses people to shoot places up or shoot themselves in public?
I believe that is probably attention for it's not the matter of getting attention as to what type, the amount, and who or what gives it.

Sad to hear this happen within your school

My brother is a PhD student at UT, was pretty scary this morning when we heard. Luckily he's okay, glad to hear you weren't hurt. Did he shoot anyone? I heard rumours of a second shooter.

Edit:

Yeah, U of T is one of those 'ahead of the curb' school where bringing an automatic weapon to school and killing yourself is forbidden.

Christ and I thought I had a bad day!
Hope your okay man, and I do hope nobody else was hurt.

No real shootings or anything around here, the closest was once when I was about 14, someone broke into the science rooms and opened up all of the gas taps in an attempt to.. well.. kill... everyone....

Thinking about that does still give me shivers actually.

That's a horrible thing to experience. Kids around here don't get guns so easy, luckaly. Sometimes stabbings occur but not that frequent as far as I hear. One of my teachers broght a bomb from the 2nd WW back into shool the stupid broad found in the shool garden. The only thing I wanted to do was tap on it and ask if I should be shitting myself. (only kidding on the last part, but I was scared)

Never been present at a shooting per-say as they appear far less common in Britain than the states. This being said, while I was on my work experience at another secondary school in year 10 some 4 years ago there was a bomb scare to which the whole school was evacuated onto the playing field to wait for 2 hours while the bomb squad arrived, living in quite a rural area we don't have any bomb disposal units near-by so it seemed to take forever. Upon arival it was apparent it was a rucksack left in a toilet cubical, it contained no bomb however the school had apparently received a letter form an anonymous source stating a bomb would be brought into the school.
At the time it was quite a scary event but now I can look back at it just being another good story to tell :)

My high school had a trap shooting team when I was there, I don't know if they still do it anymore or not. There were very specific rules in place for how your gun was supposed to be delivered the day of the meet.

One of the other kids on the team who's mother was a bus driver for the district thought she was above such rules and decided to bring her son's shotgun to school without a gun case. She simply laid the gun broken open over the center console of her Jeep and then parked in the school parking lot. We were put into lockdown for about an hour while it was explained to her that wasn't they way things were supposed to be done and that was pretty much the end of it.

Other than that incident the only time we were ever put into lockdown they called them 'practice drills' even though everyone knew they were just using it as an excuse for the police to use drug dogs to search the lockers.

I have never experienced anything like it. I have no idea why someone would shoot themselves in public. I am sort of worried that this will be blamed on videogames.

If this is blamed on video games and not the availability of firearms (amongst other things) I will be both unsurprised and hugely pissed off.

Anyway, that must have been shit a day.
Although people will call you out for just gonig after another scapegoat, I will support this by pointing out that you'd have a lot higher chances of survival if the gun used to shoot at you weren't a frigging assault rifle (let alone a knife). Also, while there's some truth in the claim that taking away guns from law abiding citizens only leaves them defenseless against criminals who will keep theirs, school shooters aren't exactly known for having ties to the world of criminals and black market weapon sellers.
Usually they use perfectly legal guns.

So he got hold of a ak-47 and then shot himself with it.Wouldnt it been easier just to get hold of a handgun as you dont normally just pick up a ak-47 on the streets.

Well other than abit random at least the guy didnt try to take out half the school with him

Woah, that's something. I hope there weren't a lot of wounded. Best of luck with all that.

As for me, I had my healthcare teacher commit suicide. Apparently he was gay and in the closet for years, was married with a woman, had kids with her and all that. We think he just couldn't live with it and he killed himself, but we'll never know.

We also had quite a few student and teacher deaths for various reasons (accidents, illness, etc). We had 2 pretty deadly years, apparently some of the worst in the entire country or something, can't really remember.

They're legal in the States. That is, as long as they're semi-automatic and don't have a full-auto setting, I think.

As for why he killed himself, my guess is that this was an act of desperation, rage, depression, all those things, and he wanted to go out with a bang. School shooters do that pretty often, kill themselves after their spree.

Cool story, bro!

The reason someone kills themselves varies from person to person. Now why in public... The spectacle? Attention? I dunno.

I'm pretty sure semi-auto versions of the AK are legal, and he was probably crazy.

Anyway, good thing no one else got hurt.

It will be a semi-auto. I own one myself. They only cost like $350 or so. They are no different than any other weapon. Most people think they are automatic or they don't understand the difference between the two. To get your hands on an automatic AK - it is legal but your looking at spending what it would cost to buy a new car to get an auto AK.

No shootings here, plenty of stabbings, burning and groups beating people to death though. I remember a guy once hit someone with his helmet(he had a scooter or something) and killed the guy in 1 hit.

I've been the target of a stabber twice, neither succeeded due to high levels of luck, nearby people and my own (bigger) knife scaring the guy off.

To mackheath: elfen lied isn't that bad....
