I find it odd that he'd use an AK-47 to shoot himself.
I mean, why an AK?

Why not a shotgun?
Or a handgun?

Using an AK just seems...bizarre.

Of course, I'm also curious as to why he did it in the first place.
I was close to that once when I was younger, but I couldn't help but think that I'd just be quitting. Just giving up, when there was so much I didn't know or experience. It was like quitting a job I didn't even have. So here I am, married, with a job I love, and loving life.

I can't get my head around doing something so...final. So irreversible.
He must have been really hurt, or really lost.
well it probably wasnt a real ak, it might have not even been full auto, it sounds like he only shot 10 shots so it was probably a semiauto rifle and the only person he managed to kill was himself so it wasnt really successful... altho given I have no idea what his motivation was it might have been

the weirdest thing to happen at a school I went to happened before I even started going there, apparently at my high school a few years before I started going there, there were some race riots between the black students and the hispanic ones and a bunch of white kids who decided it was a good time to toss around trash cans, altho it was probably blown out of proportion by the rules of story telling

The problem with saying "it's all to do with gun ownership" is that guns in America have pervaded culture to the extent that it is now impossible to take them away without severe resistance.

Imagine the uproar if here in Britain we tried to ban the sale of alcohol.

OT: Hope you and all the people there are OK OP.

I saw a kid with (what I hope was) an air pistol in his bag at school once. Other than that, there was nothing really out of the ordinary while I was there. Still, my sympathies man, it can't be good for the ol' psyche having shit like that going on in your school.

My own college has gone through one of those sick massacres in the last two years.
It truly is unnerving hearing about automatic gunfire on campus.

It totally wasnt video games fault.
Its obvious he was LARPing by himself because he was bored and rolled a 1 on his attack throw, and another 1 on his saving throw.

For my D&D group, rolling a 1 is a critical failure and you injure yourself unless you pass your saving throw.

So thats totally what must have happened. He was larping, failed both attacking, and saving rolls, and accidentally shot himself in the mouth.

And there actually was a school shooting the day after I left for good. Strange how that played out....
You must've been keeping those crazy hoodlum kids in order.

OT: People at schools in towns around mine are quite regularly caught with weapons, ranging from knives to the occasional gun. For some reason my town doesn't have the same problem, although the drug trade here is pretty bad.

Well, I've always found hat someone falling onto a beach full of tourists while on fire is kinda rude, but at least he was put out... After he had jumped from the 15 meter ledge from the road and down to the beach itself, killing him.

Police said he'd lit HIMSELF on fire, then run into the streets screaming, tried to brush the fire off himself with his hands after finally taking a dive onto the beach.

Where did he get an AK-47 and why did he kill himself?
Where doesn't concern me, it was in Texas, US after all =3. The fact that a kid can get a hold of an AK 47 at all it's my problem with it.

It gets me wondering. What really is a civilized country? One that has tall buildings, traffic jams and Apple Houses? I think humanity may have missed part of being civilized over the years, makes me glad to live in a part of the world that isn't so densely populated, at least here it's easy to get away when the civilized world drives you nuts and all you want is some good old-fashioned caveman-ish piece and quiet with people that only shoot deer and small critters.

It will be a semi-auto. I own one myself. They only cost like $350 or so. They are no different than any other weapon. Most people think they are automatic or they don't understand the difference between the two. To get your hands on an automatic AK - it is legal but your looking at spending what it would cost to buy a new car to get an auto AK.
Well no, but isn't that calibre at bit high for civilian use?

There was a shooting at my high school once because some gang members wanted a student's jewlery and the student's older brother intervened. He was shot. I wasn't too far and didn't hear a thing, I only knew about it because news vans showed up about twenty minutes later. It was after school so there was no lock down. Then there have been lock downs because people report seeing guns. The shooting was the most serious incident though.

I don't know why people do those sorts of things. All I know is that the news will blame something and ask stupid questions to people that are either too invested in the topic or who were present and not affected at all.

You can buy an Some form of an AK-47 from your local sporting goods store in the USA for around 600 dollars. If you were just going to shoot yourself wouldn't matter how much it costs. Handguns are harder to get hold of than Rifles. Glad you're okay though OP! AK-47 would be easy to handle for that purpose, especially if its a model with folding stock.

why an ak-47 of all things? surely it'd be hard to get it at the right angle, and how exactly did he smuggle it in there in the first place?

When I was in Year 7 someone had apparently brought an air rifle in for the Year 11 leaving assembly (UK by the way). Scary thing was it was on my 12th birthday.

Year 10 we had some random camping outside the school gates with a shotgun. Turned out he was the uncle of an equally weird girl in my RE class.

I have left that school now, but people camping outside with shotguns has happened again recently.

If this is blamed on video games and not the availability of firearms (amongst other things) I will be both unsurprised and hugely pissed off.

Anyway, that must have been shit a day.
Someone killed themselves (and harmed nobody else in the process) and that is the fault of guns existing? That makes less sense then the people that blame violent behavior on violent media. At least there there is some kind of connection (monkey see monkey do idea).

What kind of bullshit is a knife scare? What the hell is wrong with schools these days?

No bigger a punch than any other rifle really. Caliber really doesn't play into effect IMO. .22 is still the biggest killer round in the US. Most folks treat a .22 like a pellet gun. The VA Tech shooter I believe (correct me if I am wrong) used a .22 and a 9mm. Dead is dead and at the end of the day I don't want to be shot with anything.

As someone who owns an AK-47 I just hate the whole stigma attached to the gun. Its no more deadly than any other gun. I find it a cheap rifle that has cheap ammo - that is reliable and easy to maintain. Nothing more than that. But I do realize it will always have the ignorant stigma attached to it because every TV show or news program attaches the image of the AK-47 to evil - terrorists and the like.

I go to the University of Texas, where a student shot himself with an AK47 this morning. Not really that hard to survive, but there was obviously a huge commotion, I was in lock down in a lecture hall for three hours, and it was overall one of the weirdest days of my life, and I'm still a little frazzled. All I can think to do is my laundry. So I want to know, Escapist, have you ever experienced anything like this? What do you think possesses people to shoot places up or shoot themselves in public? Are you worried that this will get blamed on video games? There's just so much to talk about when this stuff happens I don't even know a good question to ask.
Were you actually near where it happend or just attending the same school? I ask because just being at the same school doesn't really constitute as being a survivor if you weren't in any immediate danger... no offense.

OT: Yes twice, once at a bar, after closing some gangbangers got into it and one pulled a gun and shot the other in the face. I heard the shots, but it was over so fast that nobody really reacted until to late and didn't really realize what was going on until police showed up.

The other time was downtown for a huge basketball festival we have. Same shit, ganbangers just being gangbangers. It was so crowded that I didn't hear the shots but the crowd began to surge toward the place it happend, taking me with them. I saw two people lying on the ground, innocent bystanders that had nothing to do with the shooting. Thankfully nobody died and the injuries were mere shallow flesh wounds.

An Ak-47 uses an 7.62mmx39mm which uses a smaller powder charge than standard 7.62 Nato Round which 7.62X51mm or .30-06 Round which is 7.62mmx63mm. A friend of mine owns a Mauser 98 which fires an 8mm round.
