My suggestion is to play to around level 20 with at least 3 chars :)
I played a fury warrior for 3 years only to switch to warlock then finally to rogue over the following 3 years... I'm now very happy on my rogue ^^. So definately try a few to get a feel of what you like.
As a few hot tips: Druids are really really versatile and can be challenging to master whilst brilliant to have a laugh on. That would probably be my best recommendation for a new player. Oh and what server are you on :) perhaps we can help ?

It all depends on your playstyle. As Jim said above druids are very versatile, able to fulfill both melee and ranged dps, healer and tank roles, so you could level a druid for a while, find out which spec you like and then make another charavter based on which role you like the most.
Hunters are extremely easy to level though, so if you want to level up fast i suggest one of those.

I wouldn't recommend a Hunter, I currently have one at lv66, and they're pretty fucking useless in PvP, which is unfortunate considering I'm gonna twink it at lv70. I find them fun though, but I don't take the game very seriously, this class will probably have you breaking your monitor if you're the angry gamer type.

As has already been posted, Druids are good and versatile, as well as Shamans and Paladins. The Troll race has recently been given the Druid class too, so you can look like the dog off Final Fantasy whilst kicking ass.

I think I'm gonna make a Trood soon, personally.

As mentioned druids are a great way to get a feel for the game. Druids can bot attack from range with spells, melee well with both warrior or rogue combat attacks and heal quite well in a pinch. Solo you can combine the roles, using cat to stealth to a nice location, attacking from range with spells, casting regen on yourself and switching to bear form to tank and melee enemies till they are dead, switching back to human if need be to heal quickly then switching to cat to stun and run away if things go wrong etc.

Basically druids are jacks of all trades master of none...and a great way to feel out which class will work best for you. If you love the nuking then you might want to be a mage, warlock or hunter. If you love standing toe to toe with monsters and being able to keep hate on yourself ....being the tank basically...then a warrior might be your best bet (or maybe a paladin), if you love using stealth and stuns then maybe you'll want to be a rogue and if you love healing you might want to go with a priest, paladin or shaman.

Shamans though are another hybrid that can be fairly fun. The use of melee attacks and totems along with some decent ranged spells make them a fairly fun class to play.

As mentioned above playing 3 characters is very nice when first starting out. It lets you cover all the crafting choices easily as well. Druids can fill the roles you don't choose fairly well (so you can be a tank as a druid for instance and skip being a warrior for instance) which leaves 2 other choices really.

I suggest breaking your other two characters up into types.

Type one is a pure nuker of some kind. In that slot I would put Hunters, Warlocks, Mages and Shamans. Each of these classes play alike in many ways (at least in my opinion). Each kill from range alot (Shamans less so but they are really a hybrid) and usually don't do well in the thick of combat for long.

Type two is the melee based character. For this slot I'd go with warrior,Paladin,Rogue,Shaman. Shaman is here as well because they are effective melee or ranged characters and can really fill either slot. Warriors are tank specialists really. Rogues are very specialized and I'm not sure if having a rogue and druid is that great of an idea....2 stealth characters is overkill in my opinion. Paladins are similar to warriors but can heal and are more defensive...not really sure if you need a druid and paladin either.

My first 3 maxed out characters btw were a Shaman a Druid and a Warlock. Those are the characters I enjoyed the most by far. The warlock was by FAR the easiest to level though...almost impossible to kill and a blast to play. The druid was fun, but not as powerful as either of the other two (far less then the warlock and slightly less offensive then the shaman without much to show for it).

I love Warlocks and highly recommend playing one. They offer the Solo fun of a Hunter with far more options in how you play and pets that you use. IF your only going to play 1 character I suggest going druid first (to see what you like) but try a warlock sometime as you will probably have a freaking blast with them.

Mages are ok as well but I got bored with mine....warlocks kill just as fast in my opinion, are more mana efficient (no down time at all) AND have awesome pets. I never really saw the advantage of a mage over warlock in PVM at least.

Anyway good luck and enjoy WoW....it's a very addictive and fun game:)

Priests: not too much experience here, but other than the healbot specs, Shadow is similar to warlocks except you shield yourself instead of sending the pet.
...to explain the "healbot" specs. Disc is about damage mitigation and shields. Right now it also focuses on damage kind of. Holy is big shiny healy numbers.

Also shadow is really a lot of mind blast love now. at 80 anyway, due to mastery, and even better since the recent patch it affects all shadow damage.

...I'd suggest you start with a priest, but I'm one of those people who will hate you because i leveled up before 1.7. As holy. And did damn good. Damn kids and their holy damage, and easiness. Back in my day we leveled like -men.- We were hardcore. Not this namby pamby 2 smites and you win BS ....and...uphill both ways...or something and we were thankful!

Tanks and Healers are always in high demand, if you're willing to learn how to play them.

yeah i recommend pally, druid or shammy as a starter character. good way to learn the various aspects of the game (ranged and mellee DPS, healing, tanking) and i really thing it should be mandatory for all players to either tank or heal at-least once just so they know how retarded DPS effects them

personally i prefer melle and more specifically tanking. i would suggest a warrior or a dk if you can get one.

try http://fortune.worldofwarcraft.com/en_us/personality_test.html it picks the character for you based on some questions. i did it and it suggested mage which was actually the 1st toon i leveled

should start a poll with all the classes. i like polls
