So, I just watched Taxi Driver for the first time...

...and I don't think I have been this disturbed by a film for a long time. I kind of feel sick to the stomach and emotionally drained. I saw way too much of myself in this movie, and not in a good way.

Anyway, discussion: What are some of the most disturbing pieces of media you have seen? Not just as in a "that was gross and cruel" sort of way, but more in an a way that you feel emotionally numb or incredibly uneasy afterwards. Can you pinpoint why it disturbed you so?

For me, it was probably The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Granted, I was like 7 or so at the time, but it's the only film to my memory that has made me walk out of the house because I couldn't stomach it.

This Is England '86.

My god, that series was mentally scarring. I'd watched things where rape was at least mentioned or implied in it before, but after watching that I find it hard to watch anything which involves rape in any way. It's an amazing series and I recommend it, but you better be ready for what you see. It is not sunshine and rainbows. It's way darker than the original film, which was already pretty dark to begin with. I wanted to watch the series they made after (This Is England '88), but I couldn't bring myself to when it was actually on because of how disturbing '86 was.

To me that would be that anime OVA Genocyber. So much gore and violence and they were just killing just for the sake of it. Before you asked yes I can't handle that much violence and gore in general.

There was Rei/Eve/whatever sitting on top of world-mind Shinji in a fairly explicitly sexual manner.

I just thought Taxi Driver was boring as shit, I didn't realise the title would be so indicative of a films content. I guess I missed the point.

OT: A Serbian Film made me feel really uncomfortable, (bitching soundtrack, though,) as did Martyrs because I have a real problem with watching people self harm.

Pretty much everything Shane Meadows has ever made leaves my heart in my mouth by the time the credits roll, the man is a diabolical genius.

First would have to be "Audition". It's a great film, and the third act really pours it on, which is made all the worse since the protagonist is an extremely likeable character. Second would be "Man Bites Dog". Sure it's darkly comedic, but eventually the overwhelming nihilism of that film drowns everything else out.

The only piece of media that drained me in that particular way was "Requiem for a Dream". Anyone who's seen the film knows exactly what I'm talking about when I say that the film utterly rapes the audience emotionally. The ending of the film is so relentlessly depressing that it almost feels unrealistic. But that's the problem; the sort of drug-related self destruction portrayed in RFaD isn't fake. It happens all the time. Hell, it's probably happening right now to someone out there.
I was an emotional wreck for days after I saw it, and I didn't speak for hours. I've only seen the movie one time, and I'm NEVER going to watch that fucking thing again.
It just might be the best movie ever made, but fuck it. I don't need to repeat the experience again.
