... many years ago on the PS2 and I'm having trouble remembering the name although I'm fairly sure it was a sequel.
It was set in a small town in Japan populated by a number of Samurai who could be challenged/attacked etc and a result of combat was the aquisition of said enemmies weapon of choice for personal use. Also, too much killing of civillians/breaking town rules would result in the guards getting aggitated and trying to aprehend you.
I remember the combat being very parry/counter reliant.
The story mode was date based and quite short but could reach a number of different outcomes depending on how you interacted with the town during your playtime. Also, it was based around some sort of festival which would usually be the set piece for some sort of riot/battle by story's end.
Character-wise I remember you created your own character and enemies included some crazy goth looking woman that fought like she was drunk and a Blacksmith... for some reason...
