It was actually pretty damn good. It made me feel happy and depressed at the same time. So are there any other games like this? I don't really have much experience with these type of things but I'm sure guys have your own lists. So come depress the fuck out me
To The Moon? Ehh, yeah it was ok. It is REALLY trying too hard to be an emotionally moving, indie Visual Novel-esque game though. If there's such a thing as indie game Oscar bait then To The Moon is a serious contender in my opinion.
As one person on this site has said rather astutely, the music sounds like it was pumped out from a computer set to Teary-Eyed Mode.
It's good don't get me wrong, however towards the end I just knew the game was basically trying to punch my heartstrings to death but it being so bloody obvious about it had the opposite effect. I cried once and only once and it was in no way at the ending.
"We'll meet up on The Moon silly!"
...
Ok game, you got me.
Also try Katawa Shoujo. You can download it for free, just Google it. It's this brilliantly written Visual Novel based around dating disabled girls. As weird and full on controversy bait as that sounds (trust me, I was very skeptical as well) it's fucking GOOD. Really good.
Recommend doing Hanako's route first and watch out for Emi... You click the wrong response and BOOM you're locked into her route entirely from very early on. It's not even clear that that's what you're signing on for, I was just being manly...
Just don't end up like me. I have to take Hanako's route every single time I start up the game. I go to do another route, hit her intro scene and fuck me here I go again. It's too cute! I wouldn't be surprised if Hanako was canon. She pops up randomly in the prologue rather a lot for no reason. Like your main character will just think "Oh there's Hanako, she's mysterious" every other scene or so.
Here's a depressing fact about the plot that most people miss:
I'm sure you caught that River has Asperger's Syndrome. Why is this important? Well, remember the paper rabbits? And how Neil and Eva came to the conclusion that she was making them because of the dead rabbit from their wedding? Prepare for it to be made a whole lot worse, because they were flat-out wrong about that.
River started making the paper rabbits after Johnny told her "the truth about [their] first meeting" and he assumed that she became sad that he only spoke to her because he was pushed to do so. Nope. Most people with Asperger's Syndrome are very literally-minded, and what hung her up was how he called it their "first meeting." She realized that he had forgotten how they met as kids, and the paper rabbits were her way of trying to make him remember.
He never did.
I didn't get while i had to play it point and click when later on there was movement sections, it just seemed confusing.
you could try dinner date, its where you play the subconscious of a office worker preparing for a date and being stood up. Its affecting in a very different way the protagonist is very relateble and his dialogue often hits very close to home. It's on steam and pretty cheap i think .

I never really thought that Hanako was that tear-jerky. While I got a bit teary-eyed, I wanted more than anything to slap the both of them (Hanako and Hisao) in the back of the head for being stupid. I felt incredibly old at that point (while only being 19 at the time) when they both fucked with that huge misunderstanding behind all of it.
Now Lilly... she made me cry like a little girl. Oh god, her moving to Scotland? Hisao having a heartattack right before catching up to her before she left? SO MANY FEELS. Even though I KNEW (deep down) that they were going to get together, it still was miserable feeling.
Same with Emi. God I love Emi. She got me to start running.
As for the other ones... meh. I didn't like Rin or Shizune all that much.
Now, as for To The Moon? Sure it was all by the books but GOD DAMN. The Pacing of the game and story with that music just meshed together perfectly. It was so sad and I cried for two hours after it.

I would recommend Ib if you never played it. Gao, the creater of To the Moon, made a free game called The Mirror Lied. Its a shortie, and more psychological, but still alright.
Actual Sunlight is very similar in terms of presentation and how you interact with the world. Be warned, though, that it is much darker in tone. What little humour there is, is very cynical.
The game is about coping (or not) with depression and can hit pretty hard if you've had similar issues.
A lot of people really love Katawa Shoujo, but I didn't think it was all that good, myself. That probably comes down to me not being into high school romance stories in general, though, and the game is free so it's definitely worth trying.
