I'm absolutely loving it. The openness and options are fantastic, I've even redownloaded a number of games I already own elsewhere for a better experience in terms of visual fidelity and control options. I've just dived into my first steam sale where I can really run nearly anything on the store without much hassle and I'm already a good way over the £100~ mark. I tried to hide my wallet, but paypal rendered that ineffective.

I can't wait to find out if I get to keep my job into next year so I can build my proper gaming rig and really live the elitist high life!

So, in highs pirits as I am, how much has Steam taken from you this winter holiday and what did you buy?

I've racked up...

The Binding of Isaac
Devil May Cry 4
Portal
Lone Survivor
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Crysis 2 Maximum Edition
Sonic Adventure DX (I own this like 4 times now...)
Sonic Generations
Super Meat Boy (I fuckin' love this game!)
Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles and Spinball in the Mega Drive Classics Collection
Bastion
Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition
The Elder Scrols IV and V
Dishonored
Stealth Bastard Deluxe (you should check this out if you've got an itch for some puzzles)

I know it's fairly sparse right now, any recommendations? I feel like grabbing Sleeping Dogs again on a platform where it won't crash like crazy (PS3...)!

Edit: I already have the stuff that was in the humble THQ bundle so yeah.

well you should probably pick up the orange box or portal 2. The valve collection is still on sale so it's always a contender for drive space... yeah, there's a lot of good stuff.

I'd recommend the Valve collection and the THQ Collection, if you're looking for stuff to buy.
Welcome to PC gaming! Glad you like it :)

If you don't have it, Psychonauts. It's 75% off right now, so there's no excuse not to play one of the most unique games ever.

I highly recommend the Nehrim mod for Oblivion. It's basically an entirely new (free) game made using Oblivion's mod tools. It is considered by many (myself included) to be dramatically better than Oblivion proper. The only real issues are that it is less stable that vanilla Oblivion, and if you don't know German, you're going to have to read a lot of subtitles, but it's still totally worth playing.

Download The Stanley Parable and play it. It's a free Source mod that doesn't require owning anything in order to play it. It should only take you around an hour max (around ten minutes for each of the six endings), and it's one of the most ingenious games ever.

Try out some free to play games. Tribes: Ascend and Hawken are my personal recommendations, but there are plenty of them out there. Once you go free to play, it's hard to go back.

Awesomenauts is a really fun MOBA-like. It's basically a simplified version of something like League of Legends or DOTA, but in a sort of 2D platformer style. It is a lot of fun.

The Humble Indie Bundle 7. Pay what you want for a bunch of awesome games. How can you go wrong?

That's all I have for now, but I'm sure I'll think of more later.

'Amnesia: The Dark Descent' is a dark, gothic horror survival game. I like to play with the lighting mechanics of all things, probably because it is such an integral part of the atmosphere.

'Saint's Row: The Third' is pure, mindless fun for a rainy day. You are given a great deal of freedom in that one.

Loads of stuff by THQ is cheap now, including the Red Faction series. I'd just pick up the first one and then 'Guerrilla' if you're going to go for those.

I already own portal 2 from the PS3-steam cross-play thing. Otherwise I don't like halflife 2, so no orange box for me.

Magicka. Magicka is awesome. And you can get it for like 4 quid. If you're really tight for money, it's £3.50 on Gamer's Gate. This game really fills me with joy - it's funny, it's interesting, it's funny, it has the best magic system of any game I've played (in fact, it's the magic system I've always wanted to see in a game), it has really amusing DLC that I want to get not because I want to own them but because they are just sound that awesome. Also, it's funny.

The Walking Dead and XCOM are 50% off on GameFly [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.396858-The-Walking-Dead-and-XCOM-50-off-on-GameFly] - never played them but they were my top most wanted games for a while and I was waiting for the Steam Christmas sale. GF just made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Cthulhu Saves the World + Breath of Death VII - if you're into some old school-ish JRPGs - you'll probably like them. Heck, I've never played one of those and I was still very satisfied. Oh, the two pack less than a pound - at £0.66 the games are legitimately cheaper than chips. Although I think they are also on consoles, so you might not really need them on a PC.

If you like turn based strategies - The Heroes Pack on Steam is really good - it has Heroes of Might and Magic 5 plus the two expansions and it's a very good game. As a bonus, you get Dark Messiah, which, while I'll not call a very good game, is a fine experience and if you're buying Heroes, you shouldn't pass up that offer.

Speaking of the whole Heroes thing, well if you don't mind older stuff, GOG recently had a sale of the Might and Magic pack. The sale ended, but I am almost positive the pack would come back[footnote]They had several packs on sale at the same time, now they have one at a time every day, so the M&M one would probably show up again[/footnote] - it was an amazing value - 25$ for Heroes of M&M 1 to 5, Heroes Chronicles, Might and Magic 1 to 9 8, and Crusaders of M&M. Yeah, all this for 25$ - everything was 75% off, if you chose individual titles, you'd only be getting them 50% off (actually, that's also the price break at the moment) - when I checked to see how much would my preferred games (HoMM 3, Chronicles, HoMM 5, M&M 7 and 8) cost it was 25$ as well. The pack is just too good to pass up, a shame I have most of the games in it. It doesn't have Dark Messiah, however, which is somewhat a shame but it's DRM free on the other hand and filled with other amazing games.

So, continuing on GOG bundles - another thing that may show up again on sale is the Bullfrog bundle. It's 12$ for Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2, Syndicate, Populus, Theme Hospital, and Magic Carpet. Since I cannot express my thoughts on this thing myself, I summoned a spirit of the dead better gifted in the ways of speech than me:

HI, BILLY MAYS HERE. THIS AMAZING BUNDLE INCLUDES CLASSICS SUCH AS DUNGEON KEEPER 1 AND 2 - GAMES YOU KNOW ARE WORTH TWELVE DOLLARS BY THEMSELVES, BUT YOU ALSO GET OTHER AMAZING GAMES - SYNDICATE, POPULUS, THEME HOSPITAL, EVEN MAGIC CARPET! ALL THIS FOR THE LOW, LOW PRICE OF TWELVE DOLLARS.

Thank you, Billy Mays. You know what, you convinced me to buy the pack! Also, I just noticed I don't have DK on GOG yet, so what better way to fix that by getting all the other games that are on my wishlist, too. Well, aside from Populus, just not my thing, and I hadn't heard of Magic Carpet before.

Then, there is Heroes 6. Now, if you've never played Heroes before...you may get a good or bad impression. But I suggest you download and try the demo, see if it interests you. It deviates slightly from the older games, but I myself like it, I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea, though. It's £10 on Green Man Gaming. Actually, this requires a section on it's own, so look for it below.

Moving on. Frozen Synapse is an amazing tactical shooter. Really smooth and replayable. Sweet soundtrack, too. I'm loving it. For some reason, if you get FS off Gamer's Gate individually (FS, the DLC, and the soundtrack), you'll pay less than the full pack, as the individual items are 75% off, while the full pack with all of them is 50% off.

Torchligh 2 is a very fun Hack & Slash dungeon crawler game. I'm loving it. It's 50% off at GameFly.

Then, there are the ES series - Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. For Skyrim check below under Green Man Gaming. These games are quite awesome on PC, as you can stuff 'em full of mods. Oblivion, and especially Skyrim, can look really amazing modded. Actually, Morrowind, too, although not as much as those two. Also, while not really as moddable, and quite...dated, I suppose, Daggerfall and Arena are free from the official TES website.

Last but certainly not least, are my two favourite games. Well, one is technically series - Legacy of Kain, the other is just a game - Bloodlines. For Bloodlines...for some reason they sell it for too much, IMO, wait until it's 75% off, maybe at least 50%. For LoK, I suggest GOG - it's cheaper than Steam and there was a LoK pack that might come back.

First of all, you can use this code to get 30% off any PC titles: GMG30-DPLIM-DN831 - you can apply it once per purchase, so if you want to buy several games, do it one by one. So, to recap - Heroes 6 is £10, but you can get it for £7 with it. Batman Arkham Asylym GOTY is also on sale, I got it for £1.74 a couple of hours ago. I'm pretty sure it's worth that money. Arkham City GOTY is £5 before the code. Deus Ex (the first one) is £2 pre-code, too. Disciples 2 Gold is £5 and it's another good turn based strategy, similar to Heroes. Hitman Blood Money is £4 - it's my favourite Hitman game (still haven't played Absolution, though) - it's actually cheaper than Hitman 2, and the same price as Hitman 1. Dunno why they don't have 3 (Contracts) on there - I've not seen it anywhere, actually - only GameFly lists it as not for sale. Skyrim is reduced price, and if you apply the code, you'll get it at a total of 65% off, for about £16. You have to get that game on a PC and stuff it with mods. It's the law. Well, unless you're not really into TES series...but do think about it.

Finally, since you have DMC4, I'm pretty sure you'll like DMC3. Unless you have it on a console, I suppose. But do play that game on any platform.

I...

I haven't bought anything yet.

I hope to get some money to spend on Steam for Christmas, but my new laptop is a higher priority.

And if I don't get Steam money, oh well. I'll be too busy diving into Far Cry 3 to care.

Also, great purchase choice with the Binding of Isaac, OP. That's currently my favorite PC game right behind TF2. It has sooooooooo much replayability. I'm 50+ hours into it and I still haven't found everything. I can't wait to get the Wrath of The Lamb DLC because it adds a metric butt-load of new content.

They bleed pixels is a good one if you love super meatboy. Always keep and an eye on vampire the masquarade bloodlines if you want an rpg, but I think it gets better deals on halloween sales. It is buggy and you may need to get the fan patch, but god I love it.

I bought torchlight 2, edna and harvey, harvey's new eyes, and will get walking dead if it goes 50% off. My "problem" is that I have bought most of the games I want over the steam sales that I have survived.

Yah, i'd say pick up Half-Life 2, its a piece of history at this point, and then the original afterwards if you really love that one.

Then the Witcher 1 / 2 to get some really fantastic storytelling (maybe a bit too complex for its own good sometimes, though) and with the second, being able to really get your money's worth from your machine.

And finally, give your computer the love it deserves with the original Deus Ex, and then Human Revolution. The original, while really hard to get into (I actually disliked it my first few hours with it), is one of the best games ever, hands down. Its the precursor to games like Dishonored, so definitely give it a shot. And Human Revolution, while not quite as good as the original, and stumbles a bit on the bosses, really captured the sense of freedom and choice the original did, and it's story is top notch as well.

Ive noticed a lot of console gamer's are moving onto PC now. loving it too, a good sign indeed.

I recommend if you like the sort of thing in Giving World of tanks a go it;s a free MMO with tanks and not magic sword's and all that. If you do like that you have League of legends. I am not to keen on it mainly cos of the fowl community.

Also a new game I've been playing called Kerbal Space Programe. Its a space game where you need to build the space rockets (or space planes) and blast of to other planets doc craft build all kinds of awesome stuff on it. Awesome Mods and the best community ever...

Keep in mind its still in alpha. its currently on sale at 17.25 USD (i think thats about a 10a) a real bargain. Its also cute

I own waaaay too many games on steam already... and I'm broke, and I'm stuck using a netbook for the time being... otherwise I'd probably be breaching the 500 game mark by now...

Also, welcome to the world of PC gaming, glad that you're enjoying it!

Try the following, if you have friends who like to play PC co-op.

PAYDAY: The Heist- You have to keep together in order to win. You can play with bots if you want/need to but to get the most out of it you have to play co-op with your friends.

Left 4 Dead (2)- either one, but 2 is better and now has all of the campaigns from the first.

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition- Also great with Singleplayer, but ultimately the game is best with Co-op, especially split screen if you could ever play it on consoles. I swear to you, it is some of the most fun on split-screen.

For Singleplayer, try these.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2- Also has Instant Action and multiplayer. I like Instant action as my primary way to play the game.

F.E.A.R 2- Great shooter mechanics, very challenging and good AI, I guess.

Half-Life 2 and the episodes- You can get this and a remake of the first (Black Mesa Source) for free, right now only $5 on Steam. Get it, at least to try out the good mechanics.

...and my personal favorite, Train Simulator 2013, now $15 on steam. Play for the best ever graphics and train physics ever conceived. An absolute MUST BUY, so worth it. I have racked up at least 500 hours so far, and still finding new ways to play the game. Oh, and also Star Wars: Republic Commando. Seriously brilliant squad combat. Get it. Seriously. Like right now. I'll wait.
