As a sniper, get Jarate. Then you're a useful support class XD

More seriously spycheck, build teleporters, put out fires with your airblast as a pyro and don't be afraid to demospam.

The best class to start with is Medic. You'll be able to be useful while sitting back and watching how other classes work before trying them, allowing you to become familiar with how things work. Also as Medic, regardless of whether you're FTP or not, people will love you simply because you are a Medic. Just be patient though, there are still some jerks who hate the "FTP newbs" so you might have to deal with some crap there.
This. Try all the classes, but medic tends to be a class that the team almost always needs, and you learn a lot about positioning and what other classes tend to do (because you spend all your time watching them as you heal them). Also, another tip is don't play spy or sniper if your team already has a bunch. You can never have too many of the heavier frontline classes (soldier, heavy, demo, sometimes pyro) but you can have too many spies and snipers.

As people have said, spy check. I too was F2P not long ago and I found it easiest to start as heavy.

As heavy: Jump around corners and spin your gun in the air to get the jump on people. Always push forward as you are the tank, you aren't there to lay covering fire, you are a tank get in the enemy's face. If you get ubered PUSH! and aim for sentries.

Keep playing and as you get a better idea of the maps you'll notice a real step up in your play. Also watch other players to get an idea of how to play other classes.

Edit: Heavy is the easiest I think but try medic too so if there are a lot of heavies you have a useful class to alternate to.

Edit: Also, it is worth it. Keep playing, tf2 is the best shooter I've played.

spycheck spycheck spycheck.

basically all i can say really, which is why i loveee the pyro class

setting the whole field on fire and stupid ass spies run in around like idiots = highlight of the entire game.

if you let a spy kill you, you failed that round, hands down.

/spy hating aside

try and play the class to how it should be played, rushing with a medic or engie is probably going to get you killed 90% of the time, so look for teammates to run in groups with, and just have fun mostly.

Unless you have friends to help you do not concern yourself with the trade or craft systems until you have some experience under your belt. I ended up turning a lot of early weapons into scrap metal, and then using this to craft other weapons, and now that I'm more familiar with the TF2 economy I realize I wasted a lot of stuff in those early days.

TF2 has a lot of cool weapons that you can get but almost all of these are more specialized than the defaults. I suggest keeping to the defaults (especially for primary weapons) until you're comfortable with the class. Once you have a good handle of using a class as a generalist you'll be able to handle specialized weapons.

Most of my class loadouts don't use the default primaries, but most I only take out for specialized situations. For example I really only use the soldier or spy if I need to take out enemy sentries, and so both are kitted out in an assortment of anti-sentry weapons.
Crafting is pretty useless these days, since you can always trade for weapons cheaper than crafting them yourself. If you're free to play, and you try the game and really enjoy it, just bite the bullet and buy a cheap weapon from the store, like the sticky jumper (which was only 50 cents last time I checked), so that you can trade with people.

A friend of mine just bought a sticky jumper over the weekend, and I've already furnished him with 10 or so weapons that he needed that were just duplicates for me. On many servers, people are generous enough to give away some weapons for free if they have a bunch of them. Just find the right server and you're golden (and you know that the people on that server are also pretty cool dudes who will probably be fun to play with).

Gunslinger + Widowmaker = Battle Engi domination.

Seriously, soo much fun. You should try this combo out, great for capping points.

BTW if you plan on buying more games on Steam the cost of becoming a "Premium" TF2 player is extremely small. You do have to add at least $5.00 to your Steam wallet, but the cheapest items are only $0.49. The rest of your $4.51 can go to the purchase of another game. Heck Steam even lists a bunch of games (>400 i think) that cost $5 or less.

(yeah i realize their are exceptions and some people are really good with those combo's, but for basic players, or ones who just started out, it's better to avoid those for now, especially considering he probably doesn't have the gear for it.) that's why i said that.

also a bit off topic...i find it funny it says this thread has zero views on it and 29 responses....lol

escapist why you fail?!?!?

Disregard the unlockables for a bit until you get the hang of the game, they are to keep things interesting, but complicate gameplay if you're still new.
Have fun, listen to teammates, and don't be a jerk.
Good luck!

Before I had been negating trying it due to the fact my computer couldn't run it. However, now with this new one I figure it's time to give it a go. Any advice?
You will suck at first.
.

Also you can rarely do worse than playing a medic. It's not even that hard! Hold leftclick to heal, right-click at 100% charge to uber.

Love the Homestuck avatar. Kanaya FTW.

OT: Like other's have said, there's a lot of getting used to with the diversity of weapons, it will all become natural eventually. Once you move up from watching the flow of the game as Medic, Soldier and Demoman are pretty good classes for a new player with some serious killing power behind them (Aim for the feet).

Some other advice, your first server may be full of dirtbags... don't let this scar your view of the community as a whole, there's plenty of awesome, well moderated servers out there to play on.

My advice? Don't take advice.
Play your way.
How do you find "your way?"
Play.

Alright, I DO have one piece of advice. Find your preferred game mode right off the bat. Experiment 'till you found the one you like most, and master it. Once you've mastered the game mode, you can individualy start mastering the classes.
I choose mostly offensive classes, but that's just me. Everyone plays the game differently and uses different weapons.
NEVER listen to anyone that says "Weapon X is the BEST out of ALL weapons, and weapon Y is the WORST. NEVER USE IT."
They're probably just butthurt that people have killed them with weapon Y and think weapon X is for pros, which they will also claim to be. Uh huh...
But yeah, that's all from me.

Don't dismiss Pyros.

I got a pretty cool hat out of a crate, for a Pyro. I thought, meh, might as well give it a go.

I tend to do so well that everyone else rolls a Pyro 'cos they think it's OP. Which then makes us lose because too many Pyro.

What??? Pyro is like the weakest class in the game. low health, DoT weapons and a range with the main weapon of like five feet. I have never seen a MVP player that was a pyro in a game that lasted more than five minutes. Until you learn how to airblast really effectively you are going to die, alot.

For the record that isn't a knock against pyro, i actually play pyro more than any other class, but i've always seen pyros as kamikaze fighters. they go in cause lots of mayhem distract and open up gaps in defense. but if there's sentry around pyros are almost useless.

Don't go to public servers until you get to know the classes, because the people are competitive and not forgiving, even on newbie servers people just get obsessed.
