If you want a good anime try Outlaw Star. That seems to be the anime even not anime fans like. It balances out pretty well with 70% funny and 30% serious, and even the serious is not that serious anyways.

Be sure to pick up the Japanese or the European editions of the DVD, because I heard the American one had some parts edited and one episode fully deleted. Though I don't know if this extends to the DVD pack, but just make sure before purchasing it.

High School of the DEAD
Love Hina
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi
Fairy Tail (If you like fantasy, magic and such)

Personally i started with Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Full Metal Alchemist, Trigun and Guyver but some might say a few of those are a bit weird to start out with.

Uh yeah, let's try starting with some Miyazaki. Or some Satoshi Kon, if you're after a bit of a mind fuck. Failing that there's always Higurashi as a personal favourite, or Now and Then, Here and There, which is a bit of a hard watch but is just brilliant.

I'm sure I'm not the first to mention it, but Cowboy Bebop would be the perfect anime to start on. Its a very well done show with a good story, great characters, and a wonderful soundtrack. Its also not overly "Japanese," its more episodic than most animes, and it has a fantastic English dub, all of which make it a good intro series.

Some stuff that I would recommend to any newcomer:

Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood or original doesn't really matter, but I think the original is a little better for a newcomer)
Outlaw Star
Death Note
Gundam Wing (for some classic stuff)
D.Gray-Man
Yu Yu Hakusho is fun but gets reeaallly episodic towards the middle (near the end of the Dark Tournament saga), so be warned.
ANY Miyazaki film, but my personal favorites are Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle

Some titles if you want to dive in a little deeper:

*BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad- Really good if you're into music, particularly rock music. But you really must watch the dub. It's just sooo much better and no terrible Engrish
*Ouran High School Host Club- YES, it has an almost repulsive amount of man-service, but it's a genuinely funny spoof of the Reverse Harem/High School Romance genre. Again, English dub is my favorite on this because Vig Mignona is hysterical, but you can go either way.
*Princess Tutu- A magical girl series about ballerinas... but a REEAAALLLYY good magical girl series about ballerinas. It's basically what would happen if you took an original Grimm Fairy Tale and turned it into a cutesy-looking anime.
*Wolf's Rain- VERY deep, VERY cryptic, almost cold and isolating but incredible visuals and ENTIRELY substance over style. It has some soul-crushing depth, so if you're into that sort of thing... It's really quite fascinating.

Yeah, I like anime.

10.Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. Despite having no real plot, since I consider Kai and Rei to be non canon, Higurashi is one of the most atmospheric and frightening shows I've ever seen. It constantly keeps you guessing and always gives a feeling of paranoia and dread...
with the possible exception of FLCL...
What's wrong with Kai? It's an essential part of the story.

On topic, I'd say Coyboy Bebop, Slayers, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya as good starting anime.
it may have been an essential part of the story, but was it worth it, because despite giving the story a nice amount of closure it really didn't have anything else...

The theme was presented way differently, it felt like pokemon minus the forced animal pit fights to keep me entertained, the characters, with the exception of Rika and the main villain whose name I can't remember right now, felt completely 2 dimensional in the end, the spectacular death scenes were gone and the worst part is the tone was completely different, which is what I considered to be the best part of the show...
