I've only seen two:
Death Note
Code Geass

I loved both of them, but I also know that I would hate any anime that doesn't possess some psychological aspect, some intelligence quota or complicated yet masterful plot (I don't really know what I'm describing, other than Death Note and Code Geass).

My friends have mentioned two animes to me and I can't decide to watch one of them next or something completely different:

Baccano!
Higurashi: When They Cry

I haven't looked at anything more than an introductory paragraph for each because I'm afraid of spoilers, and it's too late at night to call my friends.

Suggestions? (also one time the captcha gave me four diamonds... what the heck?)

If I'm not insane, I think Higurashi is that insanely gorey anime where cute girls go fucking insane. It seems pretty damn cool but I'm not good with gore, although I want to watch it...

I recommend my fav animes:
Gunslinger Girl
Kino no Tabi/Kino's Journey
Nichijou
Lucky Star
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Maria sama Ga Miteru

I'd advice you to watch Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex, especially if you want something intelligent and psychological. I mean the franchise has it's own philosophy page on wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_Ghost_in_the_Shell]. It's the only series where i've seen the heroes discuss the socio-economical and political ramifications of their impending action scene.

Also, the music is awesome and de english dub is excelent.

Ow and Cowboy Bebop, just listen to that intro [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zDfxZ4NcE].

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Seriously, this is the best piece of advice you'll get in life. Just stick to it until the end. Trust me.

What this guys says, GITS always stands up strong in the anime crowd and it's still some of the best writing for any TV show I've ever seen.

If you're in for something more aciton packed and humourous without resorting to horrible stereotypes I say Black Lagoon, It does play on a lot of anime cliches and has some of the most beautifully twisted characters I've seen.

If you want something current and video game related, I'd recommend Fate/Zero and Persona 4, both of which are up for free streaming.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Eden of the East is really good also.

Darker Than Black, as my avatar suggests. Some of the above suggestions are great as well.

I'm pretty sure there's a fair bit of gore (or at least blood and torture) in baccano! as well. Also, seeing as how I haven't actually seen all of Higurashi, I'd recommend Baccano!

I recommend "Tiger & Bunny," an amazing new show about corporate sponsored superheroes.

It may not be a new anime but the only one i was ever really able to get into as a generally nonanime watcher was Trigun. The plot and characters start off pretty basic but if you stick with it they develope in really interesting ways and the action is amazing, unfortunately the voice acting is a bit annoying

If you... like cars, Initial D (the re-dub by FUNimation)

Like bounty hunters, Cowboy Bebop

and if you want some good old Japanese humor then, School Rumble.

Ha, that was indeed a good one. At least, that's what I'd say now. The first time I watched it, I kept saying "Wha... how.... did they just... GALAXY-SIZED? Isn't that a little f*cking overkill?". Then after a while the logic in my brain went into a coma and I watched it again and loved it.

OT: So yes, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann will do fine, though I still personally prefer Fullmetal Alchemist (watch the standard adaptation first, then Brotherhood, which is more loyal to the manga).

Also, if you just want to watch a lot of episodes, watch Bleach and Naruto. Watched them both, liked them, but over 600 episodes will hammer into your skull after a while.

Higurashi: When They Cry
Just going to mention I think the more proper title is Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni which translates into "When the cicadas (seen it as they) cry". Anyway it is very good and has some intelligence to it...maybe...actually it's not so much intelligence as it is confusing but there is a psychological aspect to it. I especially recommend the first 5 or so episodes. The rest is good but if the first 5 don't do it for you then it probably isn't the anime for you.

Wait a minute, Lucky Star? Yeah I love the show but I wouldn't have called it particularly intelligent or psychological.

Personally the first thing that comes to mind might not even be an anime but I would like to Iris Zero. It isn't psychological in the same way that Death Note or Code Geass is but I would say it is intelligent and there is a psychological aspect to it. Oh yeah and it can get very dark. Also if you don't mind manga then I would recommend Rex Fabula.

As for other things that might not quite fit the criteria but were still quite good:
To Aru Majutsu No Index
Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt (Powerpuff girls as written by perverted Japanese old men on serious drugs. It is not so much intelligent as it is an occasionally mind fucking acid trip. That being said it is at least worth a look because it is really hard to tell if you will like this from my description.)
Darker Than Black (already been recommended but I second it)
Hellsing Ultimate (not so much psychological as it is psychotic but it is really good)
