I loved both of them, but I also know that I would hate any anime that doesn't possess some psychological aspect, some intelligence quota or complicated yet masterful plot (I don't really know what I'm describing, other than Death Note and Code Geass).
Death Note seems like a 'marmite' series (love it or hate it... I hated it, though not for it's lack of intelligence, or at least perceived intelligence).

Anyway:

- Gilgamesh
- Fate/Zero (ongoing)
- Elfen Lied
- Higurashi
- Ergo Proxy

And if there's any more I can't remember them. These are the ones I've seen, at least. Didn't like Ergo Proxy and Higurashi but it's not bad.
Yeah, that'll do me... though why didn't you like Ergo Proxy?! (No need to answer...)

However, I will add the following:

- the Boogiepop series (psyke)
- Serial Experiments Lain (psyke... really psyke)
- Paranoia Agent (as above)
- Hourou Musuko (waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more intelligent... no, sagely, than an anime should be)
- Haibane Renmei (as above)
- Stein's Gate (not seen it yet, but it seems your type of title)
- Here and There, Now and Then or whatever it's called... uh, the first episode is not indicative of the mood of the rest of the series, prepare to have your guts punched it a couple times
- Barefoot Gen (post-Hiroshima, so take a wild guess, this one's quite old, not sure where you can get it)

Best recent anime I have watched: Gosick

Best anime of all time (IMO): Fullmetal Alchemist (the original series)

Both are 'intelligent' anime.

You can't handle something without a psychological aspect?

Watch Serial experiments Lain.
It ought to be suitably pretentious.

Now for things I actually recommend:
Welcome to the NHK (Psychological and very interesting)
Elfen Lied (Subject of much controversy. Psychological and gory.)
Steins; gate (Very good plot. Not very psychological.)
FLCL (Great show. Only 7 episodes. You'll need to be able to look part the nonsensical and kiddy surface to "get" it.)
School days (Highly psychological. Sort of disturbing.)
Hellsing Ultimate (Not psychological. Great entertainment. Ongoing.)
Tengen toppa Gurren lagann (GIGA DRILL BREAKER!)

I've only seen two:
Death Note
Code Geass

I loved both of them, but I also know that I would hate any anime that doesn't possess some psychological aspect, some intelligence quota or complicated yet masterful plot (I don't really know what I'm describing, other than Death Note and Code Geass).

My friends have mentioned two animes to me and I can't decide to watch one of them next or something completely different:

Baccano!
Higurashi: When They Cry

I haven't looked at anything more than an introductory paragraph for each because I'm afraid of spoilers, and it's too late at night to call my friends.

Suggestions? (also one time the captcha gave me four diamonds... what the heck?)
You want psychological?

Ghost Hound.

That series is based around psychological study. Like literally. Two of the main characters are psychologists.

Otherwise Last Exile is a quite good and interesting anime.

Darker Than Black, as my avatar suggests. Some of the above suggestions are great as well.
Darker than Black is very good. Extremely depressing most of the time, but very good.

If you like psychological, I would recommend Now and then, here and there and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I also saw elven lied a couple of times on this thread, which was quite good.

May I suggest Persona 4 The Animation?

It fits within the psychological genre and is fun to watch. (Even if there hasn't been an english dub yet.)

Also, Baccano, as your friend suggested, is a blast. Really short but very well told.

I'll say the same thing I say in all these threads. Watch cowboy bebop.

Also, if you're a musician, watch beck: mongolian chop squad.

If you want a big, long epic tale, watch fullmetal alchemist.

Fullmetal Alchemist is always good. I watched it last year for the first time and thought it was great.

My favourite though is Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) ..such a great story.

I'd advice you to watch Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex, especially if you want something intelligent and psychological. I mean the franchise has it's own philosophy page on wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_Ghost_in_the_Shell]. It's the only series where i've seen the heroes discuss the socio-economical and political ramifications of their impending action scene.

Also, the music is awesome and de english dub is excelent.

Ow and Cowboy Bebop, just listen to that intro [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zDfxZ4NcE].
I was going to post these.

And I also have to add:

- Samurai 7; kick-ass samurai fights in a cool setting.
- Samurai Champloo; from the makers of Cowboy Bebop, a weird blend of Edo samurai culture and hip-hop stuff that's pure awesome.
- Trigun; starts off like a sillier Cowboy Bebop, becomes more and more grim with each episode.
- Visions of Escaflowne; interesting storyline, cool mechas, but you have to bite through the romance.
- Monster; a serious and mature anime without any wierd stuff, very in line with Death Note in terms of atmosphere. Has that focus on psychology you like.

All of them have a certain degree of cleverness and a deep, psychological storyline, some more than others. Especially Monster would fit you like a glove.

Haven't seen it myself, but I've heard Monster [http://myanimelist.net/anime/19/Monster] is pretty good if you want something psychological. Then, of course, you have the ones that are just great. Fullmetal Alchemist; Brotherhood is one, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is another. CLANNAD and CLANNAD: ~After Story~ are also amazing. You know what, just go to "Top Anime" on the link I put to monster and watch the top 10 ones if you want great anime. Haven't seen them all, but Myanimelist is a great place when you want to find new anime. ^^.^^
Hope I helped.

I recommend either Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Fullmetal Alchemist, Tenga Toppen Gurren Lagann... for starters, at least.

"Monster" seems like your best bet to me.

It's intensely psycological, and has loads of fantastic, well developed characters. It's pretty mature, and is grounded (mostly) in realism. The series is 74 episodes long, and while that may seem excessive, not a single episode is wasted on filler, with even minor characters getting well developed backstories. The whole thing is tightly plotted, with loads of twists and turns which never feel contrived or forced.

Seriously, every episode is available for free on Hulu, and the english dub is really well done, so there's no excuse for not seeing it! :p

Other series you might enjoy:

Baccano - Don't let the first few confusing episodes intimidate you. After you figure out who all the characters are, it's an incredibly rewarding series.

Trigun - This series starts off rather slow, despite only being 26 episodes long. The first few episodes are pretty...episodic...it's at around the halfway point where the series takes a drasticly dark turn. It's steeped in christian imagery, and deals with a lot of themes associated with christianity without actually preaching the religion.

Mushi-Shi - This is a bit different than the other things on the list, as plot really isn't what's front and center in this. What's really important here is the emotion, the imagery, and the characters. It's kind of hard to explain the premise (and I don't know why I should, there's summery's online for that), and there really arn't "spoilers", as plot really isn't an issue. I dunno, just check it out.

Fantastic Children - A show that I doubt many people here even know about. It's only about 26 episodes long, and again, the first few episodes move rather slowly, but once it picks up, it's incredibly beautiful. It's one of those "Multi-generational" stories, and the stories of these people interweave frequently due to the eponymous "Fantastic Children". It's got a very retro look, and while it may seem strange at first, it really starts to fit as it goes on. One thing I would recommend, however, is that you avoid the english dub, and coming from someone who's generally supportive of english language dubbing, the one on this one is terrible...

Otherwise, give it a go, it's one of the hidden gems of anime.

I will recommend Guilty Crown, fairly new anime with a very Code Geass vibe to it. Only about 10 episodes so far, but it has been great.
