I recommend Steins;Gate. Very good plot with IMO very likable characters. As for the psychological aspect, its not a mental game of chess like Code Geass or Death Note, its more a case of: Shit happens -> Protagonist tries to fix it -> Shit gets worse -> "WTF HAVE I DONE, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO!?"

I've only seen two:
Death Note
Code Geass

I loved both of them, but I also know that I would hate any anime that doesn't possess some psychological aspect, some intelligence quota or complicated yet masterful plot (I don't really know what I'm describing, other than Death Note and Code Geass).

My friends have mentioned two animes to me and I can't decide to watch one of them next or something completely different:

Baccano!
Higurashi: When They Cry

I haven't looked at anything more than an introductory paragraph for each because I'm afraid of spoilers, and it's too late at night to call my friends.

Suggestions? (also one time the captcha gave me four diamonds... what the heck?)
By the sounds of it, it seems like you prefer the more action packed and/or smartly done gore fests. Fine by me!

Perhaps you could try Ergo proxy for a smart pretentious dystopian drama

Deadman wonderland for a more supernatural dystopia.

Mirai Nikki for a sci-fi-ish dystopia, warning- The main character starts off as a massive ******, and WILL get on your nerves, but he mans up later on (It's ongoing, so not all the episodes have been released, it's on episode 11 at the moment)

Also a very unknown one is an anime called Speed Grapher, you'd love it if you loved death note, it's very similar in a lot of ways, but has more action.

But if you want anime, just go onto any anime site and look at some rankings. It will sift through the rubbish and the gems for you, enjoy!

Serial experiments lain and Ergo Proxy are both very sort of psychology heavy ones. Both driven by themes more then stories. Serial experiments I personally liked quite a lot, Ergo Proxy was ok but I didn't really enjoy it as much. Reason I think is that while both where quite slow moving in terms of story I felt that Serial Experiments did better job at constantly doing something with what it was exploring. Also in the same bunch is Paranoia Agent that I just finished watching. They might feel quite pretensious after watching but I think they hold up well.

More story driven stuff but still quite intellect, Monster is an easy leap from Death note, really good story and quite a lot of psychological aspects, though it doesn't over do it. Steins;Gate has a pretty good story, but not that much psychological stuff to mention. Full metal alchemist: Brotherhood I feel is kind of a middle ground there. Higurashi is also quite good but it's sort of oddly packed in that the whole first series doesn't really tie up and then the second one brings it all together. It all makes sense in the end but I just can see it a bit off pushing while watching for some people.

That's what i can say with my sort anime history, Monster is propably the easiest way to go from where you're at.

FMA. Or FMA brotherhood. Sorry, Full Metal Alchemist, since your new to anime. They are both amazing, lots of action, no filler and while they don't have quite as much of the intellectual side of things as Code Geass and Death Note, it's still quite complex and it's the closest I've found to those to in "feel". good luck, and let me say: welcome to the wide wide world of anime.

Also, I expect a lot of people will suggest Cowboy Bebop, but I strongly suggest you avoid it like the plague. The thing is, those two anime you've watched are very goal-focused. The main character has a goal and the characters and the story follow this and advance it nearly every episode. Cowboy Bebop is completely different. It has no major overarcing plot, it is almost entirely just a collection of action-packed adventures. There is some plot, but it doesn't even show up until like 6 episodes in or something. Many people don't mind that, but many really hate it, and I wouldn't waste my time on it unless you know you don't mind that lack of driving story. Besides, it wasn't even that fun to watch.

Insert obligatory Gurren Lagann recommendation here.

I like Higurashi. The way the stories are told is really interesting. The gore is... well, gory. It's kind of brutal and disturbing. I like the brutal stuff, though, and I seem to have an unhealthy obsession with a certain fingernail-pulling scene.

You've only really seen two, so I'm not really going to sort these out into ones that you may like. I encourage you to explore and narrow down your preferences.

Some ones that I like:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Elfen Lied
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Rozen Maiden
Pani Poni Dash!
FLCL
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Lucky Star
Azumanga Daioh

As I said, I didn't really sort or filter this list. I encourage you: look them up and explore.

I would recommend Shakugan no Shana, Chobits and Excel Saga, but in retrospect I didn't really enjoy them quite as much as the ones that I listed. I still encourage you to look them up, but they're not really on my recommendation.

Listen, Full metal alchemist is the best anime by FAR, if you actually like REAL story, and not some cliche` crap, then thats the anime for you, there are two versions, see both. Also darker than black is good, but as I said, it doesn't beat full metal alchemist, note eden of the east as well, and cow boy beebob.

Guilty Crown is probably the best show that you could watch after those two, as it shares some of its creative team with those two shows and is also very similar to Code Geass as far as plot is concerned. The only problem is that it is not yet dubbed, which means you would have to watch it with Japanese subtitles. If that would keep you from watching it, then at least keep it in mind. I have no doubt that Funimation will be doing a dub of Guilty Crown eventually. Seriously, do not miss this show, it is exactly the kind of show you are looking for. There is no way I can stress that enough.

For psychological shows watch Welcome to the NHK and Shigofumi

Note: the latter is subbed only

For complicated yet masterful plot watch Ghost in the Shell

I haven't finished Baccano! yet but I'm thinking it should suit you just fine.

Ghost Hound? It should fit your psychological bill but the plot ultimately doesn't come together to make much sense

Darker Than Black? It doesn't exactly fit either bill but I recommend it anyway because it's awesome
