If he was trying to be offensively racist, he would've said something like, "That's weird. I thought cops loved to shoot black people, right?"

Your friend that found offence is a jackass. Hit him HARD when you next see him.

I thought it was amusing :)

Yep, your friend overreacted by the sound of it. From the OP, I can guess that the guy who made the joke made as just that - a joke between friends. However, some people just take the world far too seriously, and just look for trouble everywhere.

It's not racist if it's funny.
Well I know what you saying, but humour's subjective so that runs into some problems.

Getting back to the OP, you friend has every right to take offence but I doubt he'l loose any sleep over it maybe he's just annoyed buy that particular stereotype.

One of my friends who is black often makes jokes about his stereotypes and will occasionally bring out the "is it because I am black line" for pure comedy. Whether or not this relevant I just find it rather funny when people take him seriously when he does it

Flinging the nastiest, most vile, brutal and if possible, racist insults at each other is a typical bonding experience for males aged 12 to a year past the grave in Australia.

Your mate over-reacted. The joke was tame as compared to the stuff I used to get flung at me for having such a mixed genetic heritage that the dna became so flawed I could only end up white.

God I miss my university days. There's nothing quite like drinking mexican liquor, dutch beer and irish whiskey with a south african, a german, a jamaican, a spaniard, three scots, a dane and a columbian while discussing the finer points of token ring networking and whether the borg could adapt to the force.

The joke wasn't racist, it was mocking an imaginary white person for BEING racist. It holds a mirror to society! IT IS THE MOST INTELLIGENT JOKE EVER. I love your friend.

To quote Yahtzee: "A society where anyone can make jokes about somebody else and everyone laughs is a truly tolerant society." That guy was overreacting, the joke isn't making fun of the fictional black character, it's making fun of the other guy being racist.

i'd have to say your black friend over reacted and is probly a bit racist himself. when harmless and funny jokes happen and people over react or look for racism everywhere, they are usually racist themselves and just haven't been called on it

Unfortunately where I live there are few other people aren't white, so there are a lot of racial remarks towards people that aren't. But they usually just see it as a harmless joke unless someone takes it way too far.
I'd say he was overreacting because I thought it was kinda funny. And if you're all friends with eachother then he should know that it wasn't racist because he wasn't aiming to hurt your other friend.

See, stereotypes exist because atleast for a time, it was often true. If black people do not want peopel to think of them as wearing baggy clothes, caring tons about expensive sneakers, and listening to rap...then STOP IT. My college has tons of black students, and many of them have fit that stereotype. Ofcourse, I also think that stereotypes is not something to get so worked up over, especcially the ones that are not so bad. Your friend apparently finds it offensive to be viewed as liking Nike shoes. Not like he said anything negative about black people, just that they have similar taste in shoes.

Well I'm white and another white friend of mine and I were talking about a black friend we both know to another white friend. As we described the black friend we started listing things like "he's got dark hair, he's quite broad, well built, deep voice... oh! And he's black"
This made us realised that our generation have begun to forget that different races even exist in our minds. Colour is no longer the first thing we think about when we see a person of a different race. This is a brilliant step towards abolishing racism.
So I think that if your black friend is best friends with 2 other white guys then corny jokes about race should not even make him bat an eyelid because there's clearly no issue of race between the 4 of you

everyone's already said this, but he overreacted
like, im quite tanned and i frequently get harmlessly bullied for not being real black, though i also get a lot of race jokes but people know i dont mind as long as they dont cross the line or mean what they say

the point is, you cant pretend that race doesnt exist, like gender, and it's fine to joke about it as long both sides take it harmlessly
cause if we just ignore the problems and the stereotypes then we end up with laws that force people to ignore characteristics
afterall, race, like gender, is part of what makes us individuals

Dude over reacted. A lot.

Plus, XBL = racist remarks from 13 year old kids + frequent rage quitting. So.. Yea. It happens a lot. I just ignore it.

Talking about racism, I know people that get offended if you call them anything other than "dark"...

So annoying.
