Attempting to help could have only made the injuries worse. You have to trust your abilities to make choices like that.

Worlds fucked up anymore. More often then not you can get in trouble for helping. It pains me to say this, but its best that you didn't. You most likely avoided alot of trouble for yourself. Yes its horrible, yes its shitty. But its just the way the world is anymore.

Bah, she probably collapsed from some sort of drug combination that gradually destroyed her brain until she did get to the cinema.
In all seriousness, people just don't collapse out of nowhere. It was probably something much more serious that you couldn't have helped out in anyway. ALTHOUGH, when someone is like that, you generally don't crowd around her and start screaming, because it causes panic and can make whatever may have caused her to collapse worse. (Collapse from fear? Shock?)
She probably shouldn't have been seeing that movie.

I'm betting it was hypovolaemic shock because she looked very very pale when they put her in the chair. My intial thought was epilepsy but given the aftermath i doubt that was the case

I understand your hestitancy since you're still a student, but I sure hope that your response will be different once you get your liscense.
So would i! But i'm sure that once i qualify i'd be insured for that kinda thing and i'd have a hell of a lot more confidence in what i was doing.

Slightly difficult question for most (not being familiar with being a medical student i assume) but in my position what would you have done? I felt a bit guilty afterwards but i dunno, would it have been a good idea to help?
Pretty much what you would have done. I've had a similar situation when one of my biking mates decided to go down and rip a large portion of his knee off (including the dreaded ACL). In theory I know first aid and how to deal with spinal injuries until the medics arrive, but in practice you panic a bit and fall back to the stuff you know well.

So recovery position it was and keep him warm while the trauma bird flew in. I guess as a proper medical student (as opposed to biker who went to some emergency first aid classes) you're going to have to get used to and get better at it. You did the right thing, plenty of people out there would just ignore it and carry on.

I woulda helped her, if I had the knowledge of course, otherwise I'd just call for help. Don't feel bad man, all these friggin policies make it impossible to actually try to help out someone in that position without gettng sued.

something like this happen in class last semester. I girl collapsed in the room, and people just looked in disbelief of what happened. On guy who happened to be an emergency response worker just walked up to her and did his emergency response thing. We all had a good laugh after he got back: our professor said, "it's a good thing he collapsed in this class because we have our own emergency team." Funny thing is that the girl who fell wasn't as embarrassed as the guy was. After she came to, she looked around, looked at him, swooned and said, "my hero." He just slumped in his seat and put his hand on his forehead.

it was a fun class.

I suppose everyone is a little embarrassed by their job.
Heh, how true indeed. Oh yes, any luck with your ODST prob yet?
sorry topic creator, I do not intend to hijack your topic.

ummm... no. ODST is fun, but it is still Halo 3. I can play Halo 3, so I am not heartbroken about it.

I guess I'll just have to get a new 360. it might work out for the best, because I'd like to see how HDMI is different from component.

Honestly with how fucked up the legal system is now, it is better to let people die than attempt to help anyone. People get upset about that but nobody gives 2 shits about the poor sap who tried to help but the person ended up with a headache the next day and sues that guy for it.

Chivalry died with common sense in the lap of a woman with a hot cup of coffee. Since then it is dangerous to be a good person. As it has been said many times before "No good deed goes unpunished." You are a med student, you especially need to be careful because you think you know what is best. Make sure you take a couple of basic law classes and look into you local laws governing when you must help and when you should steer clear.

I think you should have tried to help the girl. Fuck political correctness and fuck what any others think. Regardless if you did much or not so long as you had stated "I'm a medic" or something to that effect they would have stepped aside and let you help the girl, they would have likely thanked you for it.

Just remember you don't have to give people information you don't want them to know. It's not like you have to pass out a card or anything, just tell them you're trained to help in this situation then tell them to stand back.

I would've done the same thing. Sorry to say there too much that could go wrong there like you were saying. Some guy got sued for performing CPR and saving someone's life if I recall.

That and I'm just not that nice of a person.

Me I'm a social rebel I don't stand for the laws man, let the insurance companies come the days it's a crime to help a person in need is the day its worth being jailed man. So I'd march right over there put her in the recovery position and steal her purse.

If the victim is consious, if not then there is implied permission unless the victim's parent or legal guardian or someone more qualified than you says otherwise.
Personaly, I would have asked if she was okay(assuming that I also thought she tripped)then would have helped/called for help when there was no response. Are you AED certified? That would have made the process a lot easier.

Well, it's always the right thing to help someone in trouble, but considering the possible risks, it's understandable to not help.

Still, help when you can. It improves your karma points so you can get the super mutant with the Gatling laser to join your side.

Good move, man. You're a med Student, not a doctor. Doctors can help, students are usually frowned upon, and if you'd done anything wrong (not saying you would have), insurance would have crucified you. Don't sweat it, you did the best thing. The right thing, maybe not, but the best thing.
