To each theyre own.
And no i dont feel the same way. In my opinion the questlines were short as hell but... Dragons.
Summoning swords to feel like im Archer from the Fate/Stay Night series then saying fuck it, turning into a werewolf and mauling a dragon to death.
HOW THE BLUEBLAZING POPSICKLES DID OBLIVION EVER EVEN MANAGE THE COMPARISON?!
Yes. The questlines in oblivion kicked the bottocks of this game hands down. But that was it.
Thats the only thing they managed to tone down.
Also im a saints row fanboy. Fallout for me was kind of a "meh" and i have yet to play CoD MW 3 because im poor so i cant hope to buy it and even if i did it would mostly just be for the single player.

As a fellow Skyrim player who generally stays out of threads that either disinterest me or make me feel overwhelmed with the subject, every time I read other fanboys drown a different opinion with cries of "contrarian" or otherwise hostility, I'm reminded of the shoopuf driver in FFX who yells "Imposshibibble, imposshhibibble!"

As in: ITS IMPOSSHIBIBBLE THAT SOMEONE MIGHT HONESTLY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS GAME, WITH NO IRONY OR SPITE INTENDED!

Dare I say it? I too was underwhelmed. How could I not be with everyone calling this the game of the decade? This is it, folks, this buggy thing is as good as it gets until 2020.

I like the game, but I damn well have my colossal issues with it. The landmass got bigger but the setting is just as insipid as Oblivion and the missions are somehow less interesting and numerous.

And the bugs. Oh the bugs. Every time I read the front page of Gaming Discussion here I know a little bit more in my heart that TESVI won't fix jack-for-shit because ITS ENDEARING WHEN MY GAME FREEZES MID-SAVE HA HA HAH OH SKYRIM (True story. Lucky it was an autosave otherwise BYE BYE LAST 10 HOURS OF MY LIFE) It makes me sick to my ass that people have embraced potentially game-breaking bugs because FUS RO DAH DRAGONS BBBRRRRGGSSSFGSGA LOOK AT HOW BIG WHAOOOOOOOOOOOO I CAN PICK FLOWERS AND COOK FOOD AND FISH, I CAN'T DO ANY OF THAT IN REAL LIFE.

Many of my grievances are personal taste issues. Most of them, even, but others are fucking inexcusable and damn near fucked me over. There is no reason why the save file optimization is five kinds of ass after three games. They gimped a lot of fun things in the name of bullshit systems that no one notices are at work and ultimately make no difference in immersion because if this is a game you're supposed to role-play yourself, you're ALREADY FILLING IN THE BLANKS IN YOUR HEAD. It's just more filler for the game to keep in mind, more doors for bugs, some deadly, to get in. How does it make sense to remove the ability to make any spell imaginable but keep bugs because ENDEARING?

I thank people for bringing their issues with the game, personal or not, to light more often because this is how shit gets fixed: By "bitching" and "being contrarian" and "being a hipster" in the face of such mass blinding praise.

Highly unlikely. Consoles only have so much GPU and RAM to utilise. The Rage engine focuses all its energies in rendering linear areas in high amounts of detail.
No, it uses all its energy trying to render small amounts of detail for very great distances. That's what the ill-conceived "megatexture" technology is good for. The problem with using idtech 5 isn't that it can't do large, open spaces, it's that it isn't a very good looking engine.

Not to mention the large textures have a HORRIBLE cost/benefit ratio when it comes to file size vs fidelity. Fallout 4 in idtech 5 would be 80 gigs and look like crap.

I personally think the game is great.

Although I will agree on one thing, the guild questlines are pretty short compared to the ones in Oblivion. I kind of wished they made the College of Winterhold questline a bit longer.

Everything else seems to make up for it though. The better main story, more variety in voice actors, more developed characters, a better and more customizable ways to battle. i.e. Being able to use Destruction magic to cloak yourself in Frost to do additional damage plus stamina damage while beating people up with a sword and shield. This kind of thing really compliments my playstyle in these kinds of games.

And need I mention the dragons? Those fights never seem to get old no matter how strong I get.

Of course it's all pretty subjective. If you don't like the game, hey, it's no skin off of my nose.

It's just not your cup of tea, fellow. That's fine. Don't worry about it. I feel the same way about Fallout 3, but I've given up days of my life playing Skyrim and enjoyed every minute of it.

You don't have to like it. Lots of people don't. However many other people do. They'll pay the money to finance the next TES game, and you can have a crack at that one when it comes. Maybe it will be more to your liking. I hope it is.
exactly that's why so many different types of games are made. not everyone has the same interests, like personally even though fallout 3 and bioshock got amazing scores and are hugely popular i thought both of those games were dull and boring

I would guess that fantasy just isn't your thing. To compare this to Oblivion is on the bias side. I hated Oblivion and use it as a great example of how a popular series can sell dogshit with its logo on it and be praised for it. Skyrim is a solid game for anyone who likes RPGs in a fantasy setting. From someone who hates Oblivion and can name off every reason why it is just a bad game, I would say that there is a huge difference.

Story is flat, Characters are flat, So Skyrim ends up as a another loot gathering game, Kind of like a Diablo game in 3D.
I wouldn't say the story is flat and not all characters are flat. There are some genuinely good characters in there. Bethesda has surprised me at how much they have improved on their writing. I know it is usually a safe bet to knock on Bethesda's writing but Skyrim is leaps and bounds ahead of any of their previous work. (Yes, I realize how crappy their previous work really was.) SKyrim couldn't exactly challenge Bioware's average quality but it does challenge and overtake Bioware on their worst day and People praise Bioware on their worst days.
The writing is solid, though. I think part of the problem is the way interaction is handled causes a lot of repetition in NPC dialogue. Every guard took an arrow in the knee and anytime I run by a guard, it must be dragons. As well, I was referred to as the Dragonborn in a couple cities before the story had even got there yet.
If Bethesda had a better/extensive 'tripwire' system in place here I think it would improve things significantly.

Poor melee combat is basically a hallmark of the TES series, and I was disappointed to see that little has changed in Skyrim (I do like the shield bash, however). Mount & Blade has far superior fighting mechanics
While I love Mount & Blade, I don't think the combat style would exactly fit in Skyrim.

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls combat on the other hand? That would be awesome.

OT: I found Skyrim to be perhaps one of the buggiest games I've ever played. I've played Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas and I've had way more issues with Skyrim than any of those. Don't get me wrong, I really like the game and overall the engine seems more stable, but I've had a ton of broken NPC's and quests over my time playing through the game.

Oh dear, I know that your statement isn't a rule and there is every chance I'll like Skyrim but I hope this doesn't turn out to be true since I am really looking forward to when I can actually play Skyrim.

Are there any complaints that come up frequently about Skyrim from Oblivion fans?

Apparently it's not enough of a fruity Renaissance fair for them.

In all seriousness, I think the VAST majority of Oblivion fans like the game. But any time you release a sequel, a loud minority will come out of the woodwork claiming that they ruined everything.

Fact is, it took everything that was good about Oblivion, got rid of most of the crap (faces, voice acting), and put it in a way better setting. Then applied copious amounts of polish on top of that. I'd rank the content almost as highly as Morrowind, but with the accessibility of Oblivion.

We had a very catchy little comic from Critical Miss recently, perfectly proving that you're probably not the only one feeling that way.

Other than that, I do understand your points. Skyrim has many flaws and after 120h of playing (according to Steam) my addiction to it is finally growing thin enough for me to spend some time posting this on the Escapist.
The freedom has been restricted severely. Others may think the games doesn't break so quickly but I personally think it suffers a huge amount of limitations to avoid these exploitations.

To Skyrim's defense, slaying dragons was never so awesome before and topping Oblivion's Brotherhood missions seem to be quite an impossible feature.

As a proud owner of the USE THE SEARCH BAR!!! group I hereby wanted to encourage the creator of this thread among all other interested Forum-Escapists to USE THE SEARCH BAR next time and avoid the perpetual repetition of such threads.

How dare you contradict that first post! now I'm going to go on a needless rant about being entitled to your own opinion that will have nothing to do with what we are talking about by the time I'm finished.

What a vicious spiral these internet forums create.

That sounds great. I'd rather be convinced to like something than be convinced something sucked. The more things I like, the happier a world I live in.

lol good for you. That's exactly what I think whenever I see one of these "I DON'T LIKE THIS POPULAR GAME" threads. I don't understand the point of them at all, I mean, at least some people ask (strangely) for you to convince THEM to enjoy THEIR game, which is almost as frustrating but not quite. So you didn't this game...okay...good. What is there to discuss, really?

Yesterday a friend of mine brought over Skyrim and we played it for a good 4-5 hours. I felt like I got a good handle on the basic core of the game.
Nope, you did not.

That's about all I can say, as the above quote really means you didn't get into it... But if you are used to making up an opinion on a game after 4-5 hours, you shouldn't touch a Bethesda game with a ten foot pole.

It has over 400 hours of content! You barely played 1% of the game!

As I said before I'm a Fallout Fanboy With over 5000 hours played in 3 and NV combined, and Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time
