Battle Star Galactica wise, there's the spin off "Caprica" which they've done 2 seasons of.
There were a couple of Battle Star movies, maybe only one though. On was called "Razer" but it wasn't very good.

I have to agree, that I really enjoyed the TV series to quite an extent.

the other one is called "The Plan" and it should be watched after the whole series.

"Caprica" is excellent (but there is so many people who didn't like it, so.....)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799862/

Also "The L word", not si-fi but remind me of BSG for how the characters develop and evolve http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330251/

"Game of thrones" is also good, but everyone allready know thtat :p

Stargate Universe is a lot like BSG is a very good way. Of course that made a lot of the existing fan-base hate it, but who cares about that. Don't listen to them.

SGU contains a perfect mix of high concept sci-fi and some of the most complex, believable characters I've ever seen in a show. It's a fascinating entity and a real shame that it only lasted 2 seasons. Plus it works pretty well as an entry point for the series if you've never seen it before, they catch you up pretty quick on everything you need to know.

The same holds true for Dollhouse. It wasn't nearly as funny as Joss Whedon's other work so it threw a lot of people off, but if you can get past that it's stunning.

Stargate Universe comes close in tone but sadly got shitcanned after 2 seasons so theres no real ending.
Then again, considering how absolutely shittastic BSGs ending was, maybe thats a blessing in disguise.

I'm not sure whether you will like, but check out Life on Mars (UK, avoid the US version at all costs). Brilliant series.

Stargate was pretty bad for that. Oh, the Gouald are defeated...now what? How about a super-ancient and powerful Gould? Oh...he's dead now. Replicators! Oh now they're done too...hmm, oh, a super powerful space church!
I actually think they handled it rather tactfully. Not as contrived as you make it out to be, they definitely seemed to have it planned out well in advance.

For example, the replicators were first introduced way back in season 3, well before the gouald were defeated OR anubis was introduce(i think they had actually only beaten 1 single gouald by that point). Anubis only came in at season 5, and still the normal gouald weren't defeated yet and infact became stronger.
Anubis and the replicators were then beaten at the same time in season 8 i think it was, along with the jaffa soon going free which left most of the remaining system lords dead/powerless.

But after that yes, the Ori just seemed to kinda pop up. Guess they weren't planned as far in advance, (though they did try to relate them back into previous established content ie. the ancients who were introduced well beforehand).

But this is kinda off topic. XD

People already mention it, but Babylon 5.

The first season is not great, mostly introductory of the races and characters, but they upped the ante on season 2 and 3 to epic levels and it becomes one of the best sci-fi series ever.
