So, I won't get to see Mad Max: Fury Road until it comes out on BluRay. What can I watch instead?

Turns out that going to the cinema for the second showing of a movie, while at the same time living in a small (18k citizens) town is a terrible idea. People who wanted to see the movie already did it on the first showing and they couldn't gather enough people to even play the movie during the second one. So here I am, really disheartened by the fact I won't get to see it till it comes out on BluRay. Can you help me out? I need something I can watch instead that will provide me with a similar experience - something equally action-packed, chase and vehicle-focused and overall batshit insane. Doesn't have to be post-apocalyptic although it'd have been nice if it was.

Thanks in advance for the help.

PS. I've already seen all of the old Mad Max movies, in case anybody got that idea.

Hmm, only things coming up in my fatigue addled brain right now are the Fast/Furious movies or the Death Race movies, although the newer one amps up the pace while the older one is much better. Kinda like the new... crapbaskets... the deathsport-roller derby movie. New one fast and flashy, old one more thoughtful.

As far as car-themed movies go, I doubt you'll find anything as wild as Fury Road anywhere. Not even the Road Warrior was as insane. The thing that Fury Road did so well is that it has the absolute perfect tone. It had a lot of character without being "wacky", it was insanely grim without being depressing or pretentious, the ridiculous badass shit in it was actually plausible, it was emotional without being kitschy... seriously, you're not gonna find an equivalent when it comes to vehicle-oriented action movies as it pretty much puts everything else to shame.

I'm not sure what to recommend that you probably haven't already seen. I'd suggest venturing into foreign cinema. I'm no expert but you'll struggle finding anything on par with Fury Road from Western cinema.

Yea, sure I won't for it is well-known that Fury Road is the magnum opus of action movie genre and there's absolutely nothing that can even achieve the sheer greatness of this piece of art, let alone surpass it.

You could watch John Wick.

It's a fun and fast little shoot 'm up with some pretty solid world building and surprising heart.

Not exactly what I was looking for, but it's better than nothing considering Fury Road is apparently so good no other movie from neither the past nor the future can match it in quality.

Maybe Death Race 2000?
It is the movie that inspired Carmageddon (which was to become a Death Race videogame at first).

Just don't confuse it with its so called "remake" since it in name only.

Honestly, not a bad idea. I've seen the remake and actually found it to be quite good, so I guess I can expect this movie to be easily the best thing I'll ever see?

Don't gett me wrong, its remake was quite good. If weird that it was -as i said- in name only.
But maybe due to it being the inspiration one of my favorite games, I keep the original movie in high regard, even if it is absolutely campy.

Have you seen Crank, or the Transporter? Those are good over the top action movies.
I've seen Crank but not Transporter. I'll add it to my list.

The District B-13 movies are really awesome action movies, there's some really good car chases, a ton of amazing parkour and martial arts (the actors playing the leads, in typical French style, are actually martial artists and free runners) and overall they're really solid. I'd also recommend Ronin, it's a classic caper movie about a team of international mercenaries assembled to steal a briefcase for a former IRA member who's engaged in some really shady stuff, it's got Sean Bean, Jean Reno, Robert DeNiro, Jonathan Pryce, Natascha McElhone, and a ton of other really talented people too. The car chase scenes in it are real, are perfectly staged, and often lauded alongside The French Connection as the best car chases ever shot (before FURY ROAD came along anyway).

I wouldn't go that far. I'm just saying, most of the big-budget action movies these days are superhero-related. Many people have brought up Death Race 2000 as a recommendation, as it is the most similar to Mad Max on a superficial level. But its in-movie universe is inconsistent and requires a suspension of disbelief that Mad Max doesn't (apart from maybe Beyond Thunderdome).

I wouldn't call Fury Road the "pinnacle" of action cinema, but it's unique because it takes the best aspects of old action films and combines them with the best aspects of new action films. The only films that come to mind that have had the same approach are in the spy action genre (Bourne, 007 and Mission Impossible) or the martial arts genre, but I'm not sure they're what you're looking for.

Note to self: Next time you are being sarcastic through text, mark it out so the people can see what you mean.

I wasn't being serious about it being the pinnacle of the action cinema. I mean, seriously, it's just a blockbuster. I'm pretty sure it's not even half as good as people make it out to be and there are ton of movies that can provide a similar experience.

I knew you were being sarcastic, I got the impression that you thought I believed that Fury Road was the magnum opus of action cinema. I was merely trying to point out that while you'll be able to find action films as good as or better than the new Mad Max, you'd have a hard time finding one that does what it sets out to do and does it anywhere near as well.

It'll never live up to the endless hype that it's had, to do that it'd have to be unreasonably excellent. But what I'm saying is that it's hard to recommend anything to replace it. If all you want is fast cars and action, there's plenty of films to choose from. If you want something that is similar in tone and execution, that's a lot more difficult.

Well, looks like it's gonna be really difficult, then. I didn't just want to see the new Mad Max because I'm the fan of the series, but also because it's so ridiculously over the top while being self-aware at the same time. I simply adore this kind of movies and among my favourites in the action genre you can find stuff like Machete, Planet Terror, Kill Bill, and The Expendables.

I know a low-budget film in postapocalyptic setting, inspired by movies like original Mad Max, called Six String Samurai.
Keep in mind though, while it is over-the top and self-aware, it's tone varies very much from Fury Road and it's also RIDICULOUSLY campy.

Other then that, when it comes to movies that have seemingly resurrected a bit forgotten franchises, i can't recommend new Dredd highly enough. It's r-rated, even more brutal than Fury Road, and blows original Judge Dredd movie outta water.

You jest, but you're not too far off. In my admittedly limited experience (I'm no cinephile or anything) Fury Road is unique. Even The Road Warrior can't match it for sheer insane action. It's the only film I've ever seen that physically assaulted me, I walked out of the movie with a high heart rate and a stiff spine from being tensed up for 2 straight hours.

And on top of that, it's not at all campy, its self-aware but never winks at the audience, its over the top and entirely consistent in its own conceit. I'm sure there are comparable experiences somewhere out there, but I've never seen them.
