So...I'd like to get into Doctor Who! Help!?

Hey guys and gals!

I've been recently looking for a new show to get into for a while.
So the other night I was watching TV and an Episode of Doctor Who came on, I had nothing better to do so watched it.

It was an episode with the newest Doctor and from what I could remember it was about these like old people? They were in a village in England with the red-haired girl and it was full of old people...who had some kind of special lethal ability but I can't remember what it is...

But the important thing is that I really enjoyed it! Even though 90% of the time I had no idea what was going on.

So I would really love to get into the show....even though I the only backstory I know is that there's a Doctor who looks human (but isn't) and he travels through time and space in his TARDIS(?). So yeah that's all I know.

I think I would like to start at the first series where David Tennant is a Doctor, because I know he was one and I love him heaps, so...

But would you suggest starting earlier? Would it help with the backstory? Do I need to know the backstory?

Start earlier. Watch Season 1 of the new series forward. It helps with Rose's relationship with the Doctor and is pretty good. After that is when it gets spectacular.

Its very easy if you got Netflix,start at the 2005 series.The older stuff you don't need to watch to understand it.

New series starred in '05 I believe. If you have Netflix, it's just listed as Doctor Who, and you can stream all of it, excluding this season.

What they said, start with Eccleston. Unless you like crappy older shows, then start with the very first.

I'd say that you should start at the first season of the remake (the one with Christopher Eccelston). You only need to watch one season before you get to Tennant, and you get a lot of the back story for the series. That, and you're introduced to Captain Jack Harkness, one of the best characters in the series (who later got a spinoff show called Torchwood).

I'd actually say you can start with series five if you so choose. Its a much better way to get people who are reluctant about Who into the show. No farting aliens, attacking x-mas trees, or man eating trash cans to be had in the later series.

You should probably start at the beginning of the new series.

If you've got a lot of time on your hands then by all means, go back and watch 50 years worth of awesomeness.

yeah, start off with Eccleson, I've tried watching the old ones, but... yeah it made my brain hurt trying to keep up with two continuities at once. The only part that I really thought helped me understand the new series was the ones about the master anyway... he should have kept the beard.

Okay a couple things, The Doctor is a Timelord, he may look human but he has a binary vascular system (this lets him do a lot of cool stuff but I let you see for yourself) and the ability to regenerate when he is killed (that ties in to the hearts). The TARDIS, or T.ime A.nd R.elative D.imension I.n S.pace is his time machine. He has had it since I believe since the 3rd or 4th doctor (don't hold me to that, I have never actually seen these episodes). I would recomend starting with Series 1. Not Season 1 that is totally different. Series 1 is actaully season 30 something. Granted if you can even find season 1 you should watch it but I would heartily recomend the 1st Series as a wonderful place to start. The Doctor is in his 9th regeneration in the 1st series and curently he is in his 11th in the 6th (which is halfway over). People do tend to seperate the Nu series from the Oldies but in truth the continuity is very important. All of it is explained quite well in the 1st series though. So, my fellow Who fan to be, have at it and I hope you enjoy it
