...What are your thoughts on casting? Or just on the direction of the film in general, but I'm most curious about casting considerations, in particular Jensen.

Maybe I'm weird, but... I could sort of see Keanu doing it. No shit. It seems like his kind of role, you know? Jensen already doesn't really emote strongly, and Reaves can do his kind of cold delivery. I mean, tell me you can't see Keanu Reaves in those shades going:

"Yeah. Rip."

Yeah, I guess I can see it. But the movie is doomed. The guys in charge said how they don't want to make a video game movie, but rather a cyberpunk movie. And they think that kind of thinking sets them apart from the rest of people who attempted to make a video game movie. It doesn't. This is the exact kind of thinking that makes movies based on video games suck. Filmmakers don't take video games seriously enough. They don't respect the medium or the audience. And then we end up with Max Payne and Hitman and shit like that. The only way we'll ever get a good movie based on a video game is if filmmakers finally get it through their stupid heads that they should treat video game adaptations like they treat comic book and novel adaptations.

That's who I pictured Jensen as the first time I booted up the game. Looks and voice alone, Jensen seemed like a goateed Neo with a more assholish demeanor. First time I heard Sarif talking I immediately pegged him as Will Arnett (was disappointed when I looked through the credits and saw that wasn't the case). Whenever I was in the same room as him I expected him to roll up to me on a segway and try to hit me up for money a la GOB. Not sure who would play Pritchard, though TBH I agree with Adam Jensen's assessment above and can't really see this movie getting off the ground, or being at all that good even if it does.

Ethan Hawke as Adam Jensen would fit perfectly, hell even their face seems similar. I could see Ethan Hawke capturing "I didn't ask for this" before Kenau.

I actually think Elias Toufexis himself could play Adam Jensen just fine. He not only looks the part, he already knows the character and remarkably sounds just like him!

I can always dream of Michael Mann directing, can't I? His ability to nuance character motivations and to contrast characters off of each other would be perfect for a DX:HR movie. Not to mention his extreme obsession with realistic firefights and weapon handling.

I like the idea of this movie in that Human Revolution has a decent plot and great setting, and there's really nothing that would prevent it from working.

However after a point you can't keep denying statistical evidence, and not a single video game movie so far has really worked.

So I'm deeply sceptical about the whole thing. If it does go through, imma jump on the Ethan Hawk bandwagon.

*sigh* Every time I see you post, I always expect some witty, in-character quip, but it never happens. One day...

On topic, I can see where you're coming from. too many videogame movies try to rewrite the established story without realising that it was part of the appeal to begin with. Would it really be such a travesty to see the plot of a videogame replicated in movie format? Whilst I can understand simplifying some sequences for the sake of pacing (spending ten minutes stealthily negotiating a guarded courtyard would be a nightmare to watch), I honestly can't see a reason why the fundamental plot of Human Revolution would need to be changed.

Still, with adaptions like Days of Future Past on the horizon, I think writers are beginning to realise that smaller changes receive better reception from the fans. Who knows, maybe we'll get the movie that we asked for...

This guy here should play Adam Jensen. I mean, it's obvious, right?

OT: Honestly, I'm very wary of this film. It can work so perfectly as a movie, but if they guys behind it don't think the source material is worth making into a movie... Why the Hell are they even making it!?

Anyway, Ethan Hawke and Keanu Reeves could both play the part and nail the look. I'll suggest Liam Neeson just because.

Yeah, definitely Keanu.

The only thing that could make him MORE immortal at this point is robot parts.

As for the movie, it's probably going to suck.

It really is just a matter of track record. Movies based on games haven't worked out in the past and there's no reason to think it will here.

That being said, I'm still happy as all fuck that there's going to be a modern big budget cyberpunk movie.

Michael Cera and Danny Devito splitting every roll in the movie.... gorgeous.

On a more serious note, I hope the act carefully with not shooting themselves in the foot with the whole "Cyberpunk Movie" bit.

Well, that's discouraging. And here I actually had high hopes for this one, believe it or not.

Damn right. This is why we need the ones who are ACTUALLY GAMERS doing this, like Blomkamp and... isn't Del Toro one?

Only video game movie that was decent was silent hill, and even that wasn't anything amazing, I don't see this movie working at all... It'll end up being another cheap crap movie that they slapped a video game license on. I'll believe its good when I see it, but from what we've seen in the past...

Filmmakers just don't take games seriously, mostly they ignore the medium or fans of the game and just try to make a movie that they know they can make look amazing in trailers, but the actual movie ehhh who cares, if the trailer looks good and its based of something it will sell just fine right guys?

*sigh* so yeah another game probably going to get butchered in movie form...

Me neither, though that's because there's far too many actors who play generic dicks to choose from.

If you guys aren't too attached to what Pritchard looks like in the game, I see no reason why Peter Dinklage couldn't do it.

Pritchard isn't a generic dick, though. He's a FLAMING dick. Seriously, between his voice and his general prissiness, I'm surprised I'm the only one who came away from the experience thinking that Pritchard is either openly gay or in-the-closet gay.

I'm more curious about what the film is going to be about. According to the lead writer the film is not going to rehash the video game and will be an original plot set during the time of Human revolution.

I'm actually fairly hopeful for this film, I think it's much more likely to end up as a Prince of Persia than a Max Payne or Hitman. The things that make Deus Ex: Human Revolution iconic are it's visuals, it's theme and it's setting. It's gameplay can be adapted into any sort of action-spy-thriller. And most importantly, what gives it an edge over PoP is the franchise is less splintered in style and a new Bladerunner rip-off is long due.

Whereas Hitman and Max Payne were much more focused on their gameplay and the iconography of their gameplay. It's much harder to translate to film in any non-terrible way.

Of course Prince of Persia wasn't a fantastic film. But it wasn't awful.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I actually think Christian Bale would be good in the role. He's got intensity absolutely down and he could rehash some of his Equilibrium. But most of all I think he could manage to convey that stoic-judging that Jensen does. Jensen doesn't say much or act out, until the end, but he's watching all the time, taking in the world and forming judgements on it. He doesn't know what he is or what his place in the world is. Christian Bale could do it.

I don't think he would be keen to act it though. I think he tends to be looking for more prestigious roles, particularly now he's presumably rolling in money.

I could see Keanu Reeves too, he'd get the coldness right and bearded Ronin-Reeves could look the part too. The problem is if it feels too Matrix-y. He's not quite as great at conveying emotion behind his coldness either.

Michael Fassbender or Viggo Mortensen would be other good choices. Again we're probably not going to end up with something as classy as that

Prince of Persia sucked. It had two plots running at the same time for no reason whatsoever. The only reason they needed to get that stupid dagger was so they could go back in time to prevent Ben Kingsley from doing whatever evil thing he did that I don't remember. The whole "dagger can destroy the world" plot was unnecessary, especially considering that it didn't end up destroying the world even though they did exactly what they weren't supposed to do with it.

Speaking of video game adaptations, MARVEL should totally do Mass Effect. Directed by Joss Whedon. It would be glorious.
