this is what you do: buy Bastion, enjoy it, then make a thread about it.

Games are for enjoyment. How people enjoy is at their choice to do so. Not all of us have the time to play a game to one hundred. I have not played a game to one hundred even as a kid. I think the closest I got to was indiana jones lego with 99 on xbox360. I don't regret it. It's just a game.

Funny thing is. You get all of the fun. You might not be the one everyone thinks is the greatest but you can play anything and have fun because you do not suck at it.
Exactly, being average means you dont feel you have to stick to a particular genre ^_^
Well you don't have to be "just" average, being good at a lot of games may give you an advantage in any game. But you will probably never be the best at any game.
but that's the problem. In my case, I am average. I could win a couple of rounds against my friends in any fighting game but they would probably win most of the matches. It probably takes me half an hour to solve a Portal puzzle while my other friends take half of the time to do the same thing. I could try to become good at FPS but my friends would put me to shame unintentionally. So I would say I'm average at most, if not all, of the games I own. I'm not a casual gamer but I don't excel at any game or genre in particular.

And that's the problem my friends see and why they mess with me. yeah, I don't care much about that because A) They're just messing with me playfully and B) That's not gonna stop me, even if they were truly trying to be mean. But it still kinda ticks me off that they have this mentality where you MUST be good at some genre or game. Like it would define you as a gamer.
I see where you are coming from but the thing is that by their logic they are the casual gamers because they only excel at one genre while you are so hardcore that you actually manage to be OK at every game. Unless all of your friends are those annoying kinds of gamers that excel at everything they touch you will probably beat them at those games they don't excel at.

It's funny because you are right in so many ways. I do consider myself better (In a humble way) because I can play any genre, enjoy it and be decent at it. But on the other hand, my friends are really good at most competitive games, such as fighting, FPS, etc. The one genre I might beat them at would be RPGs, but only because I have more patience than they do.
And yeah, it is pretty annoying. That was well phrased. :/

I'm also a jack of all trades when it comes to games, though I'm crap at RTS and as a result I don't play them, which means I won't learn it. :)

It's pretty much a balancing act when you think about it. If you're average at everything then you can't be good at something unless you specialize in it. Once you specialize in a genre, you become less proficient in the others

For me, Action, Platformers, and Racing are my specialties. RTS, JRPG, Puzzle, etc. in turn I'm not so good at.

I'm in a similar situation to you. I can play pretty much any genre but I'm not exceptional at any of them. I'm definitely better than most of my friends at most games, especially fighters and old-school, well, anything really. I usually just play for fun.

Actually, I'm really good at Halo. Like, "always-finish-in-the-top-three-of-any-mode" good. It's not uncommon for me to end up with 25-30 kills in a game of Infection. And Mario Kart, same situation. But yeah, that's abou it.

Anyone who thinks that begin good at a game means anything has a very small view of the world. Play the games you enjoy and do what you like. Mastering a game is like choosing one book and memorizing the whole thing, it's impressive but it doesn't really make you a master, just someone who spent too much time mastering one thing instead of exploring the variety of your chosen hobby. Also, if someone master's one game you can whip the pants off them in another game so being a "master" doesn't really make you all that great.

This is exactly me as well. I'm average at Rock Band (which I can tell you takes some doing) but there's no modern game I excel at.If I really enjoy a game I'll play it a fair bit but I never play enough of any one genre to get the underlying skills. If I play multiplayer it's only ever for games that are different enough to undermine existing skillsets.

I'm sort of the same. I'm pretty good at Gotham City Impostors; I usually finish in the top 3 too. So of course I want to play with my friends but, as it turns out, they also manage to end up in the top 3 so my "mad skillz" suddenly seem like nothing to them.

And Guitar Hero too. I can play on Expert but I'd say I can only play about 75% of my songs' library. Still better than my friends but...someone always manages to beat me, at least once. And that's enough to claim they're better at it.

I am making it sound like my friends are horrible. They're not. And I stand by what I said: I play for fun and for myself.
,,,Maybe that's why I don't like playing Multiplayer that often.

The last thing I remember doing well at is Fall of Cybertron, but only as one class.

So I'm very jack of all. Still means I'm quite a even match for the average gamer on a lot of things.

No it doesn't matter if you're great or shite at a game, you know what matters most? what needs to be remembered? Not achievements, not K/D, not nose picking prowess, FUN. Are you having FUN? That's what matters.

This.

I think too many people focus on scoring in games. For example I'm nowhere near beating half the peoples scores on Hitman Absolution but I'm having fun playing it -now ive forced myself to stop looking at the scoreboard!

Same goes for when I used to play BF3, I didn't always rank in the top 25% but I had awesome fun playing with C4 and tanks!

THAT. gaming is about entertainment, if you take it seriously you did it wrong. You do it for fun, and fun means a different thing for different people. Personally, I tend to just focus on finishing the story taking my time to enjoy it and the main gameplay, but I don't ALWAYS go after collectibles, side missions, etc.

Uh... in this thing called "life" being good at one specific videogame is generally not a skill that gets you anywhere. If you play a lot of games you'll have fun and at least be relatively more cultured.

If you're going to spend time honing a skill I'd recommend going for something real like playing an instrument, drawing, working out, or learning a martial art. Very few people will care if you're really good at Gears of War, and even less will care in 10 years when Gears of War is completely irrelevant.
