So. I'm almost certain I will be fired from my job.

I came back from the doctor. He told me I had a virus and gave me a note for work. I called my boss and he was NOT happy about it. The way this particular job has been going, I am almost certain I will be fired because of my missing two work days to recover.

What would you do if you knew you were a dead man walking?

Not sure how it works in the US, but it seems businesses there aren't required to provide -paid- sick leave, but if you signed any kind of employment contract/terms of employment you should try to get a copy of it from your HR person or whomever handles that stuff just to see what your rights and entitlements are. If you do have a HR person you should get in contact with them asap.

You seem to hint that there are other underlying reasons for why you may be laid off, but maybe I'm misinterpreting that? If not, you -do- have certain rights, and following the proper procedures by getting a doctor's note and informing your employer. However, -if- you agreed to other conditions beforehand regarding sick leave as set out by your employer and you transgressed those conditions they may have grounds for firing you, so make sure you get a copy of your terms of employment.

But in general, no, you can't be fired for sick leave alone. Other factors need to come into play, such as repeated sick leave etc.

It might help if you helped us out a bit. How exactly has this job been going badly?
To start with, this is a fairly new job. I had a hard time deciding whether or not to call in, but sickness combined with nearly 3 hours of sleep, alongside a doctor's instruction to rest and recover made me decide to bite the bullet, so to speak.

That and certain aspects of the job are designed badly in terms of training, systems, etc. For example, I need to hold a certain amount of training in the form of online quizzes and videos. Working part time (I'm a student) I'm obviously not going to be working lots of days per week. However, in order to receive training I need to be clocked in. The way this system works, when I get back next week, I'm going to have ONE day to complete my necessary training, and they are notorious for not letting me do it, on the grounds that I have other work to do. It's very frustrating, especially seeing as they have no leniency on this even when someone is sick and can't clock in.

So even if I'm not fired for being sick, there's a chance my training will not completed, which I'm quite sure will result in my termination. That, and since I was hired later in their work season, I only have a little over a month to learn my job, whereas other seasonal hires have 3 whole months before they receive an evaluation. The odds seem stacked against me, in short.

That being said, I did call back immediately (literally 4 minutes at most) and told my boss I didn't want to leave him in a bind and would be willing to come into work anyway if he didn't mind my coughing on everybody. He said no.

Hope this clarifies things.

Edit: Two details I forgot. They scheduled my orientation day on a Friday in the morning, despite the fact I told them repeatedly I'm a student. That same day, the boss got angry at me because I didn't put my available work hours all the way 'til closing. Unfortunately I caved and changed my schedule. I regret that decision now, because I have summer classes.

Your management sounds appalling and clearly have no respect or regard for your situation or even you as a person...

I think giving them the boot and finding a better job would be the best course of action to be honest.

Yeah. My dad overheard my boss when I made the call. He told me to start applying elsewhere soon.

Overall I feel okay about this after a good night's rest. Management can dislike me all they want, I get paid the same, haha. :)

Your boss doesn't sound good at all.
I would say find a new job but that isn't easy in the current market.

Your dad is correct.

Getting fired isn't that big of a deal, especially given your actions can be summed up as 'got sick->went to doctor->got note->boss flipped out'.

If your new employers ask what happened at your last job, just tell them the truth.

Thankfully I worked in a kitchen for three summers in a row as a dishwasher/food prepper/server, so there won't really be a need to even mention this job.
