I'm up for an upgrade in a month or so, and I want to break away from the WiFi tethered iPod Touch, and currently, the only versions I can afford ar either a new 8GB 3G, a 16GB 3G Refurb, anda 16GB 3GS Refurb. Now, I'm all for more space for my crap, but is getting a refurb too risky? Should I just stick with 8GB like on my iPod for new 3G, or get a larger refurb?

as someone who used to work on a phone repair line, I would avoid the refurb phones.

I heard if you bury an iphone at a crossroads under a full moon, at midnight Steve Jobs will appear and you can sell him your soul for shiny gadgets.

So much paranoria about refurbs.

Here's a few things to keep in mind.

Was it refurbed by the manufacturer or someone else? You want the former not the latter.
Does is still have a warranty? Many manufacturer refurbs come with them.
Does it have lots of moving parts? If it does, you might want to think twice.
Is it being sold by a reputable company. If so, then you can be be pretty safe they aren't lying about the refurb details and will often offer extended warranties.

I've purchased numerous refurbed items with out any issues at all with them. Things ranging from network routers to TVs to vaccuum cleaners.

/me recommends an Android phone.
But if your set on the iPhone, I would just go for a 16gb 3GS (refurb if you have to).
My roommate has one and likes it (minus the not being able to multitask part).

It would seem that, If your iPod had enough space, then it would stand to reason that and 8 gig iPhone would suffice. Then again, everyone loves having more space for crap :D But you've got to think about whether it would be worth spending the extra money that it would cost to get the refurb on something else entirely: Something cool, like a solid gold mouse or something....

I don't know how the prices of phones and subscription are where you live, but in my country the iPhone costs twice as much as a good smartphone, but it is half as useful and much more annoying.

Maybe you should look at the non-apple devices?

As long as its refurbished, it will come with a warranty, so springing for the 3GS is the way to go.

Well, I'm on AT&T, and they don't have Android phones on there. But one of my friends has a Droid, and it kicks ass.

I enjoy my iPod Touch, and I get much more use out of it than any of my previous phones. I just hate being stuck with WiFi since most of the good apps require an internet connection.

I have to go with this guy, because most refurbs aren't all bad. Hell, this Dell XPS I'm using right now is damn good and still works.

Getting something that is a refurb means that it was once broken..so get it brand-new that way you know it is in good working decsison

On a side note, I have a Motorola Droid. While I'd say it isn't as awesome as an Iphone it is about 98% of it. That's fine by me as I'm happy with Verizon and have no desire to switch to ATT. Plus I can't miss what I've never had. The Google Nexus One is supposed to actually be better than an Iphone but i really don't know how much it costs. Pretty much any Android 2.0 or better phone will make you happy.

I'm on the fence about the whole iphone thing in general. I've not seen a monthly plan that's all that reasonable for one yet. The idea of fancy apps and gadgets is very appealing to me but I'm not tethered to my phone like so many people are. I currently use that walmart straight talk thing. 30 bucks for a thousand minutes and texts. I'm never going to come even close to that.

But I wooouuuld like an iphone...can't really justify it though.
