Infamous is free and it's good. Get free infamous.
Demon's Souls is good and probably cheap now.
Little Big Planet is very cute and fun to mess around in.

Isn't Infamous only free via the Welcome Back package? To which he has no access?

Other suggestion is Ninja Gaiden Sigma2, if you haven't played the xboxversion that is. Vanquish is a great game worthy of a playthrough as well.

Beautiful game, somewhat overlooked.

Don't forget to get a couple ps1 games. Particularly rayman, that game is as challenging as boxing with the moon. It'll last you a long time

The Infamous series is a must. I would also recommend rachet and clank (tools of destruction is a good one to start). Little Big Planet is a great party platform game. Uncharted is also really good! Resistance is ok in my opinion worth a look since its dirt cheap. Those are the exclusives I would recommend. Personally I find metal gear solid highly over rated especially if your not into japanese game story lines and if you have no previous background.

Oh and both playstation home and playstation plus are kind of useless and not worth the time or money.

My recommendations separated into genres and tending towards the earlier in the series. 7 of those games have several sequels that expand on any concepts you like, so you're bound to find something you like.

Valkyria Chronicles ? it doesn?t get much more weird and unique on the ps3. Download the demo.
Also try the demos for the Pixel Junk titles as well as echocrome.
Warhawk is pretty interesting: the ground combat will feel familiar but the air combat is pretty unusual and a lot of fun.
There are a lot of threads about people getting ps3s. Weird, as a ps3 owner, I?ve felt like it?s been going downhill.

True most of the time. BUT! You have to go in and play Scribble Shooter. That game is proof that we should just fire all the game designers and replace them with a bunch of 8 year old kids. Awesome game that's exclusive to PS Home. Kind of a stupid move on Sony's part, but they've been known to pull stupid stunts before.

If you like Japanese culture and like to run around a relatively open world doing manly things, go for Yakuza 3.
If you like techno music, get Shatter on the PSN.
If you want a game with good motion controls, play Flower.
Like racing games? Go for WipeOut HD and the expansion.

And how are you getting a PS3 for free? I would like one too.

There are tons of free demos like I mentioned above. I played with them for about two weeks before actually buying anything for the ps3.
