The key to beating any addiction is to fill the void with another vice. I recommend coffee.
Keep yourself entertained. Most people relapse when they're bored.
I recommend Tobacco. Cocaine or Heroine should do the trick too.

I used to drink but, like most, I eventually gave up the habit. This, for me, means I simply don't go to bars and the like and, if I do, I drink sparingly. For me, this means having the occasional coctail but mostly drinking water or a soda/juice. Any bar that can make a coctail ought to have both soda and juice on hand.

Out of interest, why do you think men would be different from women in this respect?

(Not having a go, just wondering.)
That's quite alright. :)

Well if he's a man who enjoys dancing, then I'm thrilled. I wish I could convince my man to join me at clubs. Unfortunately, the men I associate with would rather have railroad spikes driven into their eye sockets than be seen trying to dance. Maybe that's why I assume more men enjoy the nightclubs for the drinks and the women, rather than the music and the dancing.

I recommend carbonated water. You'll drink it at around the same pace as your friends drink beer because it's impossible to chug (because it's terrible). If you'd like some actual flavor I recommend drinking tonic or bitter lemon.

Also as someone remarked earlier: do keep yourself entertained. I've been trying to cut down on my smoking habit and I do find that I have the hardest time when I'm annoyed or bored (like when I'm waiting for the bus). Try and have something to do, like kick your friends' asses at pool (which won't be too hard when you're sober and they're loaded). Gives you something to gloat about later, too. :D

I drink water or soda. I try to vary the soda, or I drink alchohol-free cider. (like 0,3 vol%)
The water is free :)

I stopped drinking for 6 months last year. Back after I finished uni I was living with some students and just getting wasted every night. I was very very messy one night and ran out in front of a car and got hit by it :(. I decided to give up drinking, with the intent of taking away the lesson of, well, being more sensible with drink. I'll tell you this for nothing; Scared the shit out of me.

When it came to nights out, I mostly had stuff like squash and lemonade, an Orange Juice, a non alcoholic mocktail or just water. I tended not to go out to clubs as much while I was drinking, but throwing some shapes on the dancefloor can still be a good laugh, even when sobre. Not as fun, and can be awkward when everyone else is falling over themselves, but I usually just left when I wasn't having fun anymore. People understood because they knew I started feeling awkward.

Once you've made the commitment to do it though, remembering why will help you. I was scared by the fact I ran in front of a car, and so I wasn't anywhere near tempted for a long time. Even to this day now I've not gotten properly messy again!
