Hello, dear gentlemen and gentlwomans, i have just recently purchased Fallout from steam, and i'm going to be diving into the game blind. Aside from knowing the main plot line, a few of the quest's, and some of the basic game mechanics, i know little of the actual game, and, without my printer to print off the online manuel i'll probably end up either minimalizing the game alot to keep looking back at said manuel, or simply pour all of my stats into combat, and despretly shoot my way thru the game.

So, today i have two qestions for you escapist's:

1. What are some basic tips you can give me realted to Fallout (Spoiler free as possible, if you can.)

2. What games have you gone into blind, and what was the result?

EDIT: Just for the sake of clarity, i'm refering to the original Fallout.

Well, an important question need be asked here... which Fallout is it?

I went into Company of Heroes knowing nothing about it and ended up loving it.

1. Save often. This isn't Fallout 2 tough, but it can get tough.
2. I dived into SoTC with no knowledge - loved it to bits. One of my favorite titles.

pour lots of points into speech and the explosive skill
explosive should be around 15
and speech should be around 30
this will help speed things up when you do the infamous "Atom" quest
i highly recommend disarming the bomb for only one reason
the house you get is much closer to the fast travel location when you spawn there

two negatives to this against bluing the thing up is the fact you get less money, and some pretty fireworks
you want to have your home base as close to you as possible you will be coming back there a lot to dump your crap off

edit: crap i thought this was fallout 3

Ah, The original Fallout, Fallout 1.

Sorry, more of my bad, Fallout is sort of a general term, i just sort of figured that most people would get that i meant Fallout 1.

Well I assumed you meant that, but I didn't want to start giving you tips for the wrong game or something... Also, don't get bored and give up like I did with it...

Just sit down and play it, game manual is more than you need to know.
If you manage to get stuck somewhere, think of a different than obvious way out before reloading the game.
No amount of reading or preparing yourself will help you, you will either love it or hate it.
Just be careful if it clicks, first time I played it when I was in high school(same year it was released, I almost completely screwed up my grades.

1. make sure you have a GOOD science and repair skill. there are some bonus things you can do to net extra XP.
2. the junk for necropolis is in the manhole near lou, the supermutant guarding the watershed.
3. shoot for the EYES of the deathclaw, NOT THE LEGS.
4. keep your speech up, you will need it here. this isnt the run and gun of fallout 3, people here can fight back HARD.
1. Noted, figured it would come in handy.

2. Noted.

3. Thhhaaaaaaaannnnnnkkkk yyyyooooooooou.

4. I always keep my speech up for my characters, it's a rule of thump (Or mutated Toe, for that matter) with me to have character's with high speech.

Well I went into Fallout 1 with one eye open - I'd played Fallout Tactics, which is kind of similar whilst being completely different in places.

I'm a little way into Fallout 1, and my usual tactic of small arms and stealth seem to be doing well so far, and getting a party member was pretty useful. Oh and quicksave is your friend.

As for games I went into with no knowledge, recently it was S.T.A.L.K.E.R Pripyat. Managed to throw my gun away instead of holstering it ><

But I much prefer going in blind than getting advice makes it more fun when you're completely in the dark.

Then again on my first playthrough of Baldur's Gate 2 a decade ago I made an archer that couldn't use longbow's...needless to say that run never go finished.

They fight back HARD? Who cares if you are harder!
Besides, playing a low INT/speech character is fun, some "dialogues" are too funny that way, if you get high on top of that... Yeah...

OT
Don't play that game the way someone else told you, play it like it plays for you.

My advice is, if you've already played Fallout 3, then don't play the first.
3 will ruin your enjoyment of one if you've never played it. I still prefer 1 over 3, but I played it first.
If you haven't played 3 and one is your first outing, then make sure you finish the water chip quest as soon as possible but the best advice I can give you is do NOT get the caravanners to deliver water to your Vault. Wait until you get the functioning water chip from the other vault. Can't stress this point enough.

The thing being is that i have already played 3, i had figured that something like that would come up, but i've found that i'm so enamoured with the fallout universe and setting that i should do myself some justice and play the originals.

That, and i tend to enjoy a change from the normal games i play.

I haven't played the original, but I know that putting all of your skill points and ability points into combat things is a bad idea. Its good to keep things even or within 10 points as your other stats (when not getting any bonuses from items and such.) I also reccommend you go to your local library and use a computer there to print out the manual, or go to a friend and print it.

I also went into a fallout game blind, but it was the third and it's easy.Don't know about the others but the third is relatively easy.

If I recall correctly, the last patch for Fallout 1 actually got rid of... that.

OT: Dumb characters are incredibly fun. I mean, ridiculously so. But when I play Fallout games, I usually find that Big Guns are the way to go. But mostly because I likey Miniguns... on civilians... in groups...

No, it didn't. It got rid of the time limit to find the supermutant base and kill everything in sight. The water chip quest still has a time limit (at least the last time I played it only 6 months ago). Once you finish the quest in the initial 300 days, then you're fine to do what you want in game for as long as you like.
-edit- Also, delivering water to your vault cuts the time by about half and makes it much harder to get the water chip.
