If you would like a summary of this post, skip to the second to last line.

I'm moving into an apartment this fall, along with my girlfriend, and three friends from college.

And I'm getting a dog. Period. It's a question of when, not if.

It's also a question of what, of course. One of our mates owns a Weimaraner. She's a polite, laid back girl, but she don't take no guff. My girlfriend owns a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy (4 and 1/2 months old) who's all go, but very respectful and gentle, otherwise.

So I'm looking for a dog that can handle apartment life (I'll be taking it on 2-3 daily walks), as well as other dogs, and cats (because I'll be visiting my parents a lot, and they have cats). So recommend me some breeds (and remember your elementary school, explain your answer), please!

I know dogs are all individuals, I'm just looking for a place to start out. I'm not actually looking for breeds that generally do well in an apartment setting (that's a bonus, if the breeds name doesn't start with "Miniature" or "Toy", fuck that shit), just what you think are good dogs.

Please do not recommend American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiller, Doberman Boxer, Bullmastiff, or German Shepard, because they're not allowed. Also, I might cry. Three of those are my favorite breeds. Also, not Labrador Retrievers. They're great dogs, and I love them, but there are bazillions of them (around here at least), so I'll certainly stumble over a few while I'm looking.

So in summary, if you like dogs, tell me which ones. Besides those above.

And thanks for humoring my strange request.

Personally, I think everyone should own a Corgi. They're intelligent, fun, they adapt well to apartment life, and WOOK AT HIS WIDDLE EARS.

I've owned miniature poodles before, and they're decent pups but not what you're looking for.

Damn, my dog is a pit bull shepard, I can say from experience give your dog outisde playing time every now and then. The apartment can send them into a half dead laying down state If youd on't, plus they love It.

I just went and had a look and found a page that would seem to recommend Corgis...
Oh course, you could just use the site to find any dog you like, but here's the page:

Cairn Terriers would be great, they're fine around cats and will accept any sized living area.

I was always a fan of Black Labs, although I don't know if that falls into your Labrador retriever category... You could consider a mutt too, they're so adorable. Also hound dogs are very loyal and so cute when they're young, with their wrinkly little faces. Ahem ~cough~ all of this dog talk has gotten me a little girly, time to go eat a few raw eggs to man up a bit, and then consume some American soil.

Airedale Terriers are great. They're very friendly and don't shed too much.

While you won't get a lab, I recommend a Golden Retriever. Nicest and calmest dogs you will ever meet.

Yeah, if you have a car, you'll discover that those dog like to hide in the shade of one of your tire when you are backing up.

Portuguese Water dog, if you can find one.

They do need to be kept active, but as long as you're walking them a couple of times a day, they have no problem with being in a house all day. And they don't shed, which is nice. It does meen you have to groom them more often, but it's nice not to be covered in fur.

Yes, these or miniature datchsunds. My father owns 4, they are very playful, yet know when to calm down and relax. Also even just one daily walk would be fine for them. The only major thing you need to watch for is back problems, just the basic don't let them jump from high places and such. And they are generally easy to train and are in general smart dogs.

These too. Also nice calm dogs, especially when bred with a purple tongue chow. Mother owned 1, and she was a beautiful, mid sized lovable dog that gets along great with other dogs.

Or an Australian Shepherd. Again my father owned one before the dautchsunds, and she was lovable, friendly dog. A little hyper, but with 2 or 3 walks they are fine. Also they are the size of 2 min dautchsuds, but still a lap dog.

This is more of a question for yahoo answers.
Probably more appropriate. But I know less stupid people here, and some other guy had a post about going to a strip club for his birthday, so I'm not too worried.

Shiba inu?

Poorly explained answer. Come to the front desk after class. But seriously, tell me about them.

I've heard nothing but good things in regards to Corgis and Dachshunds (the latter of which were apparently bred to hunt down badgers, nice). And Corgis ARE adorable.

Australian Shepard though, that's different.

It's not that I WON'T get a lab, it's that there are so many around, a suggestion to get one is redundant. They're already staring up at me, waiting to be adopted. *internet sigh*

But yeah, Golden Retrievers are lovely dogs.

Don't feel bad about it man! Dogs are awesome, and that's exactly how I get over Pit Bull Terriers.

Yes, Datchsunds were bred for hunting badgers and sending messages through tunnels the dogs had dug during the first World War. That is why at night or a cold day they love to just burrow under a blanket and snuggle. And yes Corgis ARE frakking ADORABLE!!!!

Edit: Sorry, my fathers dog was a miniature australian shepherd. Still a smaller mid sized, lap dog, and absolutely adorable.
