The game itself is fun. Big, open and immersive in a way Oblivion failed to be. Combat still blows, but I prefer the lack of mana regeneration. It makes being a magic user more difficult. Which stops them being the catch all uber pwnerator of doom. Meaning there is a point to sword swinging. Simply put it balances the mage with the warrior, and that's only a good thing.
It balances them in both being comparatively useless. Morrowind might have balanced warrior and mage, but enchant and alchemy decimated everything. Uzi fireballs, Absorb health nukes, +4000 str & luck potions etc.

I felt that Oblivion was a lot more balanced than Morrowind, magicka regenerated, but you also burned through it faster, it's as though they set it up to be used on an encounter basis. It's similar to fatigue, in Morrowind, you hardly lost any fatigue from fighting, but running drained you rapidly, in Oblivion, you actually regenerate fatigue while running, but what fatigue you have is sapped more quickly than it was in Morrowind.

Alchemy is still somewhat overpowered though when you start making damage health/fire damage/shock damage poisons, but it's still better than the godly attributes that Morrowind Potions potentially gave you.

It really depends on what you care about with your games. If you put voice acting and graphics high on your list of priorities, you're going to be a bit disappointed.
If you put voice acting and graphics high on your list of priorities, you wouldn't be playing Oblivion as much as the OP.

Expect something much better. Some environment, an actually interesting location, badass villain, absurdly kick-ass creature design ... they just don't make games like this anymore.
It's true that the environments in Morrowind are more varied. The game was challenging from the word "go". If you get the original version, you will face a loooooooooot of Cliff Racers. They are everywhere and hard to spot. Plan on having a distance weapon or spell ASAP! Save OFTEN.

It is cool because you can have your 1st or 2nd level character stumble into high level stuff. I swam under one of the black castles on a lake and wound up facing a crazy guy in a tunnel. I tried repeatedly to get past him (as he was at least level 30 or 50 and wound up with some good swag and found out that I was in a place with a 100th level lock on a door to the castle. So in short, I fell in love with the game for allowing you the chance, however difficult, to really pull off something epic at low level.

Also-if you get an alchemy kit early you can make $$ very well and pearls are much more plentiful and the aquatic areas are actually not made of silt all the time like in Oblivion.

Best of all: You can fly. (Beware of spells ending mid-flight/levitation.) :D

But it was fun discovering the quirks of the game as well. Finding out that you could increase your INT with a potion to make your next potion of better quality was fun. Being able to make your dream weapon or spell was a lot of fun for me, even if it took close to the end of the game to do it.

I was actually disappointed with Oblivion's item enchantment system. I could never make "the" combination item I wanted with the percentages I wanted, even though you could find items with more enchantments and higher levels in the game. I couldn't find the mix I wanted in a pre-gen and I wasn't allowed to make things at least as good as the loot. That just didn't work as well for me as the system in Morrowind.

But really, the whole line has been pretty exciting and I can't wait for the next one!

Put points into one weapon.

Or you will never hit.

EVER.

Really, the weapons in that game missed all the time if you diidnt put alot of points into them.

Also levitation breaks the game, enchant something for 5 point of levetation constantly and the only thing that will annoy you is cliff runner.

Oh lord, Cliff runners...
