Mass Effect, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Fallout 3, Oblivion (GOTY if its available), Assassin's Creed (may get annoying after a while, did not bother me though), Gears of War, Gears of War 2, GTA4, The Orange Box, Prototype and Crackdown. Halo: ODST, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Bioshock 2 come to mind when i think of things that are coming out. Rockband 2 if your into music games. There also some good xbox originals out there, if your interested/can find them.
Also: are you getting elite of regular? My elite has never died on me, and it has a good hard drive if you want DLC.

Get a 360. It has a huge catalogue of quality games, a great online service and lots of nice features.

They break, which is annoying, but it's worth getting one, since the warranty and repairs service is quick.

are you into RPG's? KOTOR games are fantastic if you like a good narrative driven character.

EDIT: also only rent Mass Effect its really not "that" good. and if you really like it after buy it. but be cautioned.

Mass effect is a definite buy. I couldn't really get into Oblivion but I think that's just me so I'd recommend it because a lot of people I trust rate it highly. Fallout 3 is an excellent game (The graphics are actually superior on the 360 too surprisingly enough) Those would have to be my main choices.
