I played 2 first without much of a problem. Although it did sort of corrupt my idea of the original once I finally did play it.

I played HL when i was young and didnt remember it at all (Though I beat it recently so I know what happened) but HL2 is still great even without playing the first.

OT: I've never played the first, but it's on Steam if you want to. I managed fine without it. Read a Half-Life wiki if you want to know what happened without playing. They're not linked apart from some of the characters though, and the theories about the Combine and whatnot.
The second is great though; near pitch-perfect pacing (although the vehicle sections are too long), excellent voice-acting and writing and the perfect example of how unique games are as a story-telling medium.
Play the second one if you want to, I can't think of anything WRONG with it off the top of my head. Skip the first though, unless you absolutely love the idea of running around with a crowbar for 90 percent of the game.
I found that a lot of plot in the first Half Life stayed there really as HL2 does begin anew with a new threat really. You'll see some familuar faces/monsters in the sequel but that's about it really. The plot of HL2 is definitely more mysterious than it's prequel counterpart, which you'll find from overhearing conversations, the odd newspaper clipping and spoken dialogue by NPCs

Great experiment where the hero pushes a crystal into some sort of energy beam goes wrong, portal to a strange dimension clogged with monsters opens up, monsters come over, kill everyone/turn them into zombies or enjoy a leasurely day stuck to the ceiling. Hero finds crowbar, starts beating the living daylight out of anything that is not Black Mesa Security, gets better and better weaponry, kills tougher and bigger monsters, army shows up to fix the mess by killing anything alive in the whole facility, hero fights some more, goes into monster dimension, has some really strange physics experience, kills the boss monsters over there, saves the universe and is congratulated by a guy in a really nice suit who got acting training from Keanu Reeves.
And you don't even need to know all this to enjoy HL2.

It'll be fine, you don't play Half-Life for the story anyway. You play it for the physics based mayhem.
