So I'm thinking of getting a tattoo...

I've been tossing the idea around for a bit, and I'm kind of still on the fence about if I want to do it or not. I've narrowed it down to two designs (The Tengwar inscription on the One Ring, or the Crest of Hyrule), but can't decide if I want to do it. There are really only two things holding me back from getting one: money, and the fact that I can't donate blood for a year after (I like donating blood). So, asking the Escapist what they think seems to be the most logical course of action.

And for discussion value: Have you ever considered getting a tattoo? Do you have any? Feel free to post pics, but keep it clean.

I'd probably go for the Tengwar inscription, out of the two, but I'm not a Zelda fan so I'm bias.

It's definitely worth getting though, after getting mine, I had a lovely sense of uniqueness and completion. Like I'd 'upgraded' myself.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. You have to wear that forever. It would be kind of odd to be an 80 year old man with Crest of Hyrule on his arm wouldn't it? That's just my opinion.

If I had to choose one, I would pick the crest. It at least has an actual design rather than just being writing. If someone sees the writing, they are going to ask you what it says. And that might get annoying after a while.

Try to get a tattoo that means something. Body art is fun and all, but if it's just a preference, you're stuck with that preference for life, or until a laser burns it off your flesh.

If t hese symbols hold meaning to you, I'd say get them. If not then I would tell you to pass. I went through the "I want a tattoo bad" phase and I wanted to get symbols along my body. THey would represent the five incarnations of imortality "Death, War, Nature, Fate, and Time" THe five forces that touch us all, so to speak... I've been thinking it through for 3 years now and I'm still not 100% sold on it.

Keep in mind a job may require you to cover it up. I have to cover mine for my work at a school. That said, though, I'm totally getting another one. They're cool and can express your love for something better than many things. I, too, though would vote for the LOTR one because when you're 60, will the tri-force really have that much meaning to you? I mean, we hope it will but you never know. LOTR has stood the test of time and will continue to. It's the staple of most fantasy and deserves the due recognition.

Tattoos are gay. It's more uncommon these days to not have a tattoo. If you want to be unique, don't get a tattoo, your body is already unique. Google "Crest of Hyrule tattoo" and you'll see how creative that idea is. I'm sure the ring one is popular too.
What does homosexuality have to do with anything?

Personally, I think that if you're on the fence about anything permenant and unnessary, then don't do it.
You can always get it later if you become more sure. Don't talk yourself into something you don't really want.

I want this:

The top line of symbols
I've been thinking of nerd tattoos for ages now, yet for some odd reason the Stargate chevrons never came up to me. I have no idea why because they make fantastic tat's.

So yes, I've considered getting a tattoo. Still do kind of. Fact is, I'm a pretty big nerd, and to me it's a very important part of my personality and something I'm very proud about. I'd like to express that strength and love in a tattoo.

I've been looking at various nerd-related designs that, while nerdy, are also stylish and quite pleasing on the eye on their own, without needing the nerdy connection. So not something like this [http://www.nintenblog.com/images/retrovar1/nintendo-tattoo-big.jpg]... *shudder*

Designs like the Imperial emblem:
Mass Effect's N7 logo, on my chest:
The Metroid logo:
Etc, you get the idea. Now you can add SG chevrons to that.

I especially like the Imperial emblem. It's nice and symmetric, stylised and simple but also very recognisable for insiders.

Well, like I said, the only thing really stopping me is not being able to donate blood for a year (which is something I enjoy doing).

Seriously why would you post that on here? You must know by now how judgemental the people on here are of smokers, drinkers, people with tattoos, people with piercings, people who smoke weed and so on.

Half the replies will be telling you tattoos are bad or for losers or for insecure people or whatnot.

Anyway, I agree with Erana, if you are unsure then don't do it, I never advise getting one if you don't have the spare cash. I got one when I was 18 and haven't had one since largely because I don't have the money to burn on something I don't need like that.

Wait until you have the spare cash, then see if you still want one. As for the donating blood argument, that rule will apply forever, so if you want one badly enough then get it, then after a year start donating again.

Eh, I've considered getting my National Insurance number (Social Security to US people) on my calf simply so I can't lose it and it'd be handy for filling in forms. Not quite the same as a vanity tattoo, but what the hey.

Don't do the crest of Hyrule, loaaads of people have it.

If that's the only thing against it, then go for it! I've been thinking about getting the names of every girlfriend I ever had (of course coded in some awesome way) tattoed on my right shoulder.

I rather like tattoos.

I got the hammer of Thor (Mjolnir) on my right upper arm.
Complete with Viking style ornaments around it and two Viking style dragon heads.

A display of my Viking heritage.

I find that rather offensive.
Sure they are much more common than they used to be, but calling them gay?
That's just low.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask you to remove that picture due to it containing an unhealthy amount of BADASS!

Just kidding, keep it up. Seriously, that is awesome!

I thought about getting one, but, that means I'd have to shave if I got one anywhere that's not on my back.

I don't like shaving my body hair..........ever!
