As a hack'n'slash, get it if you want, though I personally think there's better ones out there. Though the story and characters? Yeah right, bang your head against a brick wall a few times and you'll get a feel for what the story and characters do. The game contains the most unlikeable characters I've ever seen with a story that really makes me scratch my head at times. Oh, and don't bother hoping that your choices make any impact in this game - they don't. Nothing you ever do changes the story.
After reading this thread I finally decided to give it a go. Found it for 8 euros on amazon, so I doubt I´ll feel ripped off.
The combat is way better than DA:O, but everything else is way worse. The enviroments are bland as hell, especially the opening area, and the story lacks any kind of emotion and it doesn't even seem cohesive. I loved Hawke, they should keep his voice actor if they are planning on making a game with him again, but the writing was just sloppy.

Even if you get it for cheap, it's 20 hours that would be better spent on something else.
They touted the game as more intimate and politically focused, but that was a load of bullshit.
It's about as political as Eragon.
The game makers have their own political opinions and the game is used as a soapbox to preach these opinions in a bias and non-nonsensical way. That's all.
You'll like it if enjoyed Twilight/Eragon/Stormbreaker and other melodramatic schlock.
It doesn't make any sense if you think about it, it's not half as deep as it thinks it is.
