I didn't do anything all that special on my 18th birthday as I recall.
But, if I could go back, this is what I would do. I'd go buy a decent cigar, and drive somewhere nice and quiet, and I'd sit and smoke the cigar and just think about my life so far. Then, after that, I'd probably go spend time with the people I care about.

I live in a state where if by 15 you haven't had your first hangover you're a 'sissy', so that whole 'getting hammered thing', not a big deal.
For my 18th, and for most of my friends, it was pretty much the same.
Buy a pack of cigs,
Buy a porno,
Buy a M rated game.
And...tell everyone you're legal to bang.

Actually, when I turned 18 it was shortly before I started a 9-month volunteer and travel sort of program, so I didn't manage to organize much of a birthday. I saw a couple friends, that's about it really. Of course, drinking age in most of Canada is 19. But then I have bad luck with birthday planning.

Had a party at my house, didnt know 3/4s of the people who showed up, some group of seedy dudes were doing drug deals whilst chilling on my trampoline, heaps of people got their shit stolen, i swear there was a group of at least 20 gay people there and to top it all off some girl had a seizure in the backyard and we had to call an ambulance... i dont remember too much apart from that

Turning 18 sucks in Canada because you still can't legally drink. However voting for the first time was kind of cool. I remember for my birthday I had blast at a buddies camp.

I too think birthdays are completely useless, but at the same time so's Christmas and pretty much (if not every) other festival, you gotta mark your calendar for days to party extra hard if you chose to party all the time though, otherwise it gets stale. So yeah, having a day to go out with friends or family to do something special may as well be 12 moons or 365 days after you were born (and then repeat).

I turned 18 last February, by that time i'd made friends with like everyone in my college class so i basically invited everyone except for the "Nerds" of the class(i have nothing against them, technically we're all nerds it IS a games development course but these guys were just assholes who only respected their opinion...) i also invited a few friends from high school, anyways i woke up on the day of the party(saturday the perfect day) called a few of them to find out that most of my college friends weren't coming then i went of facebook and saw that the rest of them weren't coming, in the end it turned out awesome cause only my best friends from high school came along with their girlfriends and we just sat and reminisced about our high school days and cause i thought fuck loads of people were coming i bought like 20 pint cans of beers plus like whatever the people who showed up bought so we had all that, got slaughtered.
