Netscape 8.0 to be exact. Yeah, it's not working out too well. Things are constantly jittering in and out of existance, some things that show up in other browsers don't in this one, and there are scroll bars where none should be. I will say this, though: the load times are surprisingly fast.

Anyway, to add some discussion to this thread, what's the most antiquated peice of technology you own?

We apparently have a Commodore 64 somewhere in our house. That's probably one of the oldest I can think of that we have.

I have a stick beside the table in my room. It's a little pointy, but not actually sharp. I used to use it as a toy sword when I was a lot younger, maybe 8 or 10 years ago.

A sewing machine from 1891.
One of those old fashioned boom lenses that look like concertinas from 1902.
A few pieces of old horse drawn farm technology that has been sat in our farm's shed since mid 1800s.

Oh and a Paleolithic stone axe. Which marks it out as around 10,000 to 40,000 years old. It was Upper Paleolithic, judging by the technique used to create it.

Do I win? :D

I don't know, are you using Netscape to type this?

Wait, Netscape still exists? 0_o

OT: We have an old Mac Plus. You know, back before Microsoft came in, took all Apple's ideas, and took over the industry? Back when all the games were on floppy discs and made for Mac?

Or maybe our vinyl record player is older...

Currently the only really old thing I have is a 570MB hard drive, its a 5.25 inch drive (size of modern CD/DVD drives) and about 4 or 5 inches tall.

Although a few years ago we had a really old computer, Pentium 1 (100MHz), 2MB RAM, 1GB Hard Drive, and a video card capable of 640 x 480 out at most.

That it does. Just search "Netscape" and it should take you to the AOL site where you can download it. Join in on the flickering, outdated fun!

That would appear to be the case. 8.0.2, in fact.

I'm taking home a set of 5.25" floppy disks to use as coasters tonight, does that count?
I also have an old-style manual water pump, a turntable, and an NES -- and two of those items are still in use. Actually, I could go on all night with the antiquated stuff I have in my room and at my house.

[small]I like old things. They're cheap and often reliable.[/small]

Then yes, you win. For now, at least.

Fantastic!

I admit, I only really started using it because I saw this thread and it reminded me I had it on the computer due to my ICT course. It's surprisingly compatible with sites for such an old model, especially something owned by AOL, and the speed is actually very good even by today's browser standards.

Edit: I think I have version 4 somewhere too. If I can get that running the Escapist I'll be sure to post the results.

I just wish I could do something about the flickering. Still, it's really not as bad as I expected.

Not sure there's a way to solve it, it's some core issue with the display. Considering support went entirely sometime in '08, they quality is pretty good.

Also, may I present to you, Netscape 4.79:

Apparently BBCode is not supported, so spoiler tags do nothing. Quote is shown as the old, indented style of many original forums and the hover information on badges is non-existent. Speed was still pretty fast though. Tons of glitches, however, including text overlap higher up the page.

I don't know why, but I find that really cool for some reason.

No shit! I remember using netscape and that little thing orbiting the big N. I have an NES around here somewhere, and I swear there is a commodore buried somewhere in the basement with at least 3 boxes worth of floppies.

Well thank you for a memory.
