The only game I've had to deal with this is Demon's Souls, and while admittedly it's a little bit irritating when the phone rings or the doorbell goes off and I'm sitting there in the middle of boss fight #4 (attempt #27), it just ultimately WORKS in that game.

Pausing breaks immersion, giving the player control over something that the characters in the game can do nothing about. If you can't pause, you can't be safe, and in a game that wants to make you feel like you're about to be fucked constantly, that just adds to the experience. Demon's Souls is that kind of game. The lack of pausing is critical to the atmosphere.
It still should be the players choice whether he wants to break immersion or not, What do the developers care, It doesn't make their game worse just more annoying.

well monster hunter freedom unite has a pause. I don't know if your talking about tri which I haven't played. to pause MHFU you have to press start to open the menu then select pause. this can be a pain as well though as you can't guard or attack while doing this so you can be killed while trying to pause.

I'm really not a fan of unpausable cutscenes, because my dad does not regard watching a movie and watching a cutscene in a video game the same way. He will just pop in and start talking, and talking louder and get pissed off if I try to ignore him so I can finish listening to the cutscene.
In these situations, being able to pause a cutscene without having to watch it again from the beginning or flat out missing a chunk of plot is integral.

Immersion and atmosphere are nice and all, but what about the real life? Is it really okay that a game punishes you for having a life? That you lose progress because you suddenly have something else to do than to play the game?

This attitude reminds me of the news article about an MMORPGer couple who left their baby at home to play WoW at an online café, only to come home half a day later to find the baby dead. It's an exaggerated example, of course, but it shows how messed up us gamers' priorities can sometimes be... Peeing in a bottle just so you don't have to break out of the game is a more down-to-earth example of this attitude. And that's just gross. ;P

I sincerely hope this doesn't become a trend in games.

I got DQIX and I noticed it doesn't have a real pause feature. If you bring up the menus or maps or logs the monsters still spawn and sometimes even run at you. I've noticed this a lot in Japaneses games. Metal Gear Peace Walker, Monster Hunter, apparently Demon's Souls. I don't get it, why take out such a simple function that's been in games since games started? If I want to say pause to change the channel or go the bathroom or answer the door I should be able to.

I don't see it being a big hurdle on the game development side of things. If I'm in single player I should be able to pause if I'm in multiplayer then a psuedo pause like DQIX.

Of all the things that need to be worked on in games, you take out the basic pause function. Really, why that of all things?
DQIX - close the lid on your DS.
Peace Walker - no idea as I haven't played it.
Monster Hunter Tri - press the Home button on your controller.

As for why they do it? Well, I suppose they do it to add to the difficulty of the game and it turns a merely tense encounter into edge-of-your-seat intensity. Instead of being able to pause it and spend 5 minutes deciding whether you want to use that potion, you have to make a split-second decision. Personally, I quite like it in a number of games. I wouldn't like to see it added to all games, but having it in a few of the more "hardcore" titles is a good thing.

I have noticed this as well, with the DS you can go into sleep mode instead of pause and the 360 you can press the XBox button which will usually even pause cutscenes and, in a similar fashion, on the PS3 you can press the PS button.

So, there are ways around this usually but I agree that it is annoying and really only warranted in online multiplayer games where if you were to pause it would screw up the game.

PS: Dragon Quest IX also lets you do that quick save thing as well.

It's "supposed" to add to the difficulty.

It doesn't, It's just extremely annoying.
Ah, so it's in the same vein as making checkpoints further and further apart the further you get into a game.

What a stupid idea.

That's why you need to learn how to download food!

Don't use Onlive though, you don't get to keep the food.

well in Demon's Souls it makes sense that the pause doesnt pause the game since its how the game works.
