Sat on my butt and watched the earth go to hell. Seriously, it's a proven fact that once the sun becomes a red giant, the earth will be one of the planest swallowed up by it. So if the world is slowly going to hell, what's the point in saving it?

And if it's for our children then they have nothing to worry about. It's gonna take a lot more than we as a species can ever do to truly negatively effect this planet.
Wow, what an impressive body of reactions this community has! Isn't cynicism cool!

Except that the overwhelming majority of science contradicts the statement that humans can't "negatively effect(sic) this planet". You have to avoid many years and literally tons of research to believe that.

And re: "So if the world is slowly going to hell, what's the point in saving it?" Because maybe the next 3-5 billion years until then will be more pleasant if we take care better care of food, natural environment, water and habitat resources now?

Our species as we know it has only been around for about 100K years, and what we're talking about is responsible personal, national and global ethics and systems for maintaining a healthy environment.

Go to any industrial city in a country without even moderate emissions controls and see how it feels breathing the air there for a few hours. Beijing (where many people wear masks outdoors) closed down manufacturing plants months ago to try to clear the air in time for the summer Olympics. During visits atheletes were becoming ill doing normal workouts.

The impacts that industrial, farming and waste management practices have right now on our personal lives are massively documented and quite well understood, and is a large reason why so many large corporations and governments are now scrambling to get on the enviornmental consciousness train--not because it's fashionable but because the preponderance of global understanding has shifted in a big way.

"Half-wit, hippy and pretentious" me for actually caring enough about our future as a species and my children's lives to think that it's actually a good idea to *really learn about* what we do to impact the earth positively, and what we can do individually, locally and with our votes.
I've been truly owned haha. I do agree with what you're saying though. As a community, we can truly change. However I'm both lazy/pessimistic, so i think that the majority of people who simply don;t care and would rather go on with their lives as is outnumber the people who are doing something. Therefore, as long as people still avoid the issue, the earth will still be in peril.

But to go back to my original post, I still think that the world right now is in manageable disrepair. As said, I think it's gonna take a lot more for there to be a big problem.

So, care to educate this less-than-earth savvy user?

I missed out on my 10.30 pooh. As i haven't relieved myself in that manner today, technically i have saved the water it takes to flush it away. Other than that nothing. Oh, i didn't toast my sandwich today so i guess i saved some electricity as well.
Having the choice, how could you NOT toast our sandwich?! I mean.... that's just wrong, Earth day or no! Everyone knows toasted is better. That's like turning on your TV, but leaving the Cable box shut off. Yeah, you're watching TV, but it's not any good!

Snip..
I am so sorry! I thought it would be different and it kinda was but it wasn't better! It seemed like a good idea; non-toasted fresh bread, some ham, some salad and mayo. I should have had toasted cheese and bacon....

I know its wrong but i was confused by my own non-toasting mindset and beg for your forgiveness!
I'll tell you what. You can be forgiven this time, but this time ONLY. If I ever hear that you ate a sandwich untoasted again, ESPECIALLY with cheese and bacon... so help me I will find you, bury you in your backyard, and assume your identity.

Cheers :)

I wore a death tree shirt, it's a dead tree with skulls hanging on it and it's growing out of a big skeletons ribcage. it's what happens when you dispose of dead bodies incorrectly. But I haven't done that since 1998.

Oooh, Yessir, Thankyasir! (on another note its not a great idea to steal my identity as you would have to put up with the ex, unless you fancy taking her out as well?)

Oh, shes quite crazy i assure you. Sitting around in her night dress throwing faeces at the wall whilst reading Dostoevsky and watching Gilmore Girls sort of crazy. If you think you can handle it give it a shot but be warned, she is ginger!!!

On topic however she is also a very green living girl and composts all her waste.
(thought i had best keep it slightly related else we may end up in tangentsville)

That was the key thing I needed to know. I am also ginger, and 2 gingers are not allowed to be together... They creat super spawn that would destroy the world (and therefore not be environmentally friendly)! You had me intrigued with the throwing of poo, though...

Should be doing work but instead I'm on here drinking lots of tea and smoking cigarettes. (The quitting is going well by the way) Later I'm going to go to the pub with the other half which is always fun.

Nice reply, thanks! There is a lot of good information about environmental issues here: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/
Click on the "Environment" link top left, and then select from the list of specific topics top right, "Acid Rain, Air Pollution, Deforestation, Causes of Global Warming", etc. to read more.

National Geographic articles provide good explanations for non-scientists, have a nice smattering of pictures for ADHD people like me, and are pretty careful vetting the research they cite. The organization clearly has a conservation perspective though.

For me the biggest challenge is getting past the home page articles, like "Most Earth-like Planet Found" and "Waking the Baby Mammoth", seeing as how I've always wanted a baby mammoth.

Have fun!

My last post was supposed to be a quote--sorry.

I made it a point to litter all day and beat up a couple of environmentalist whack-jobs that actually think the planet is incapable of handling human existence :)
