I started in the middle of season 5, and I don't recommend doing that.

I'd suggest choosing either the 9th, 10th or 11th Doctor and starting from their first appearance (season 1, season 2, season 5, respectively).
Enjoy :)

Definitely begin with the Eccleston series, because a lot of characters in his time as the Doctor are seen in later series with other Doctors.

I'd say start with Christopher Eccleston.

Although he isn't my preferred Doctor he does a good job at easing people into the new Doctor Who series.

At the moment the beginning of series 5 of Nu-Who is a good place to start - it's the beginning of the current story arc with the current lead actor, and will allow you to catch up quite quickly with minimal confusion.

You can then go back for series 1-4 to catch up with previous events (which are sometimes alluded to but never essential) and then dip back into the previous 26 seasons as you wish after that.

That's my advice anyway - Who is too big to catch up with chronologically.

If you only want to know about New-Who, then start with series 1 (Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor), and work forwards. If you care about the older stuff, then you'll have a job of trying to find every episode as many were lost or destroyed by accident with no copies, but in general there wasn't (as far as I know) as much a deal placed on continuity so you don't really need to watch them in any order. Good to see, but not needed to understand modern-day Doctor Who. But yeah, the best thing is just to watch the modern series from the very beginning, in order, and then if you want to watch older episodes just pick and choose whatever takes your fancy. That is the best advice I can give, and trust me, it is literally the best advice anyone is going to post here...

I'd start with the 9th doctor if I was you, but that's mostly because in America, we only got it starting from the 9th and then jumped around with collection releases of other earlier doctors.

I disagree - starting with the current season is both confusing (because of River Song and her previous appearances) and leads to spoilers, especially the BIG ONE which you should know about, and also ruins the whole illusion. I stand by what I say, and it doesn't take that long to get caught up, even if the 11th Doctor is indeed the best one so far (in New-Who at any rate). I would strongly advise against starting in Series 5, unless you want to ruin the second half of Series 4 and the mystery of who River is in her first appearance...

I suggest you start with the episode "Rose." It's the first episode of the Ninth Doctor's run, and the beginning of the newer Doctor Who stuff. It's not the strongest ep the show has to offer, but it explains everything. And if you have questions, I'm sure Whovians around here would be glad to help. :)

I'd start from Eccelston or from David Tennant, you can't skip both of those and live with yourself.

Depends. If you really want to get into it I'd say go for episode one of season 1 (the 2005 season) and go forward from that point. If you just want to see if it's ok I'd suggest watching episode 1 of season 5 (the first one with the current doctor Matt Smith), and watch from there instead. Though after watching that episode watch S03E10 "Blink". It's a very good episode, and you need only a passing familiarity with doctor who to get into it. A good first time episode.

It's mainly episodes from the first two doctors that are missing. I believe after Patrick Troughton all the rest are still available on the net somewhere. I mean I think every Dr.Who fan should watch the very first episode at the very least and also any episodes that explain some of the origins of the main villains Daleks, Cybermen etc.

OT: I think if you start with the new stuff you won't like the older stuff and vice versa. It's your choice really, I mean if you like good writing and characters then start with the older stuff and if you like complete daftness and nonsense then the new stuff does that alot.

YES I AM COMPLETELY BIASED.

Grab eccleston and go all the way through to the current ep.

There is no telling which doctor you will prefer, so watch them all in the right order for best experience.

Start with the 9th doctor, everything else will seem dated, cause it is. That is not to say it is not good. The 9th doctor and on is just easier to watch for a newbie.

On a side note my 7 year old son says the 10th doctor is the best.

Seasons 1-4 are on Netflix streaming so their is no reason not to start at one.

In random some what related news, Christopher Eccleston the 9th Doctor was offered the role of Sylar in Heroes, but turned it down because he is against the stereotype of Brits, being super evil.

start wth Eccleston and work your way up from there. Of course you could just jump straight in with the 11th Doctor and watch the last two series, then go back and fill in any gaps.

If you're looking for 'classic' episodes to watch to get a jist of the history of the show, i'd suggest

1st Doctor
Unearthly Child/The Daleks/Edge of Destruction - the first three stories of the show

2nd Doctor
Tomb of the Cybermen
War Games

3rd
The green death - (giant maggots created from radiation, who wouldn't like that)
Terror of the Zygons

4th
Genesis of the Daleks
Ark in Space
City of death

5th
Earthshock
The five doctors - 20th anniversary episode

6th
Revelation of the Daleks
Trial of a timelord - just to see where te series went bad

7th
Rememberance of the Daleks
Survival

The first episode I watched was the first os season 3 but I went back to watch the older episodes the week after and loved it, I say start from the beggining, which is "Rose" as the begining is usually the best place to start. OR you could skip straight to the 1st episode of season 5 which is the start of the Moffat seasons as there is very little continuity.

Honestly start with season 1 of the reboot, and if Rose drives ye insane, skip to season 3, alot of people I know at least hated her enough to not give the series a proper try.
