I say start with the 9th Doctor and go from there. Or you could start at the very beginning... but some episodes are missing, so maybe you could go with either the 3rd or 4th Doctor...

Actually, this is a good beginner's guide for new Doctor Who fans: http://blip.tv/sf-debris-opinionated-reviews/doctor-who-101-5123833

11th doctor has some pretty lol moments within his episodes. Especially the whole "bowties/Fez hats/Stetsons are cool" bits. And when River Song blows them up. With, of course, the exception of the bowtie.

Yeah, I'm with the rest of the people on this thread. Start with "Rose." It's the first episode of the new series and the 9th Doctor (Eccleston), and serves as an excellent introduction to the series.

Assuming the new series, I'd start with series 1, Episode 1 "Rose" and go from there.

The new series does a good job as a primer for Doctor Who. It's not comprehensive, and there are bad episodes, but still. Eccleston's run as the Doctor was INTENDED to introduce a new generation to the Doctor, who had been off the air for most of or all of their lives.

Classic Who is kind of a clusterfuck. Not only do the serials kinda mandate something like Wikipedia to do in order, some of them were destroyed, and aren't necessarily there. Or complete. There are entire arcs which are pretty awful, though I don't think it should reflect badly on the show. It spanned two decades of continuous airtime before being put on haitus, so there were bound to be missteps. Some of them big.

If you like the new stuff, going back is good. Everyone has their favourite Doctors (The Fourth is routinely heralded as the best, but I don't like Baker and prefer the second [what little I've seen] and the fifth to him, so it all breaks down to preference), so it's hard to say which one you would like best. Check pilf's list, as it's pretty much as good as any I can think of, and see which actors you like.

Probably for the best, I liked the guy they got to play Sylar.

I don't picture Eccleston in that role very well, though I will sing the praises of Eccleton otherwise.

I just got into it last month, and I started with the first series of the new one. 1-5 are all up on Netflix so if you use it, you can just stream them all and find 6 somewhere else.

I started from the beginning. S1 E1. Episode is called Rose. I'd say that is a good place to start. Also, I think its been said already but Billie Piper is damned hot. So yeah...start from the beginning.

The first half of the sixth season is out on DVD, with only a couple weeks until the second drops. And then the complete season with commentaries and extras drops in a month.

Easy enough to get your who fix, it seems.

Normally I'd say season 1 of the new series, but since that's been said many times already...

Start with the episode "Robot" from the classic series. It is the first of the Tom Baker run, and it stars Sarah Jane as his companion. Proceed to watch all of the Tom Baker Episodes (all 7 seasons). They lead in to the Peter Davidson seasons. Watch both of those as well.

When he regenerates into Collin Baker, STOP WATCHING. Collin is just... awful.

THEN watch Season 1 of the new series. Eccleston is excellent, and Tennant is better. It's worth watching the old stuff because Tennant draws a lot of inspiration from Tom Baker and Peter Davidson (in the Tennant/Davidson crossover short, he even says "you were my Doctor" to Davidson). You'll have a fuller, richer appreciation of the series.

Seventh Doctor is the best, and has the best companion (Ace)

I am of course, biased.

The very beginning of the new serieses with Christopher Eccleston is a fine place to start, as it was intended to be since it was the first new episode of Doctor Who in 20 years or something.

You could also start from the beginning of series 5. It was a whole new Doctor with a whole new Companion. There is a fair amount of insight into the characters, so that's also a decent place to start, if you so choose.

Of course, you could always try and get some of the original serials. The very first serial, "An Unearthly Child", certainly does a pretty good job of representing what the doctor is all about, if you don't mind horrible special effects.

Start with the 9th doctor, everything else will seem dated, cause it is. That is not to say it is not good. The 9th doctor and on is just easier to watch for a newbie.

On a side note my 7 year old son says the 10th doctor is the best.

Seasons 1-4 are on Netflix streaming so their is no reason not to start at one.

That's a shame. I'd have loved to see him as a long term character AND crazy evil. At least he got to be that cool invisibility guy though.

I feel sorry for the OP, everyone is giving different advice.. XD.
Honestly I don't think I could really suggest a definitively good introduction episode, Dr who for me just grabbed me from the get go with the weeping angels.
I wish I could help more but Dr Who has so many episodes and so many different periods of quality that imo you'd be best off with just taking a random stab with like ten episodes

I started from David Tennant. I don't know why but I just didn't like Eccleston version of the doctor. Don't start from the Matt Smith one or you'll be completely lost.

Didn't he play another guy in Heroes anyway? The invisible one?
