this is like the 50 thousandth thread about "i just deleted my games" or some similar shit in these forums.
Why do people think these are discussion worthy? and why do they think we care? Do people think the Escapist of all sites gives good advice? (spoilers, we dont)

If you have a problem with finishing your school work then limit your gameing time and learn some self control, in in my dorm with 2 PCs, a tv, and an xbox with internet/gameing addiction and i complete my work on time and find time to hang with friends and hang with my girlfriend and do other shit.

I was addicted to games once, but then i took an arrow....okay seriously. In highschool I would stay up til 5am on week days playing games, which wasn't good. My dad took away my system. What did it fix? Nothing, nada. Just like others mentioned, if you really don't want to work and start procrastinating, then having no games won't make a difference. I am more in control now. I stare at my Ps3 which sits very near me when I am sitting here studying but I don't jump on it as quickly as I used to. Every now and then I might lose control and just jump on it but I pull myself back. It's all about willpower. Youre just hiding your problem, not facing it. If you need to get bad grades to help you learn to control it then do so. I failed one class because I didn't pay enough attention, that's how I learned, what will it take for you to learn?

Next step ... get off internet forums. ASAP

Forums and message boards will suck up all your time better than any individual game. If you are serious about making a life change, you should include them in the purge

I think its a good idea but sadly I lack the will power to get it. I never seem to have homework as the most important thing and I end up eating or doing something pointless.

Hi fellow escapists,

I just deleted all my games and I mean everything. Why ? Because it was harming my school results and if I don't finish this study I'm kindly screwed with a 30000 euro bill I got to pay. So I guess thats incentive enough.
I went so far that I changed the password from my steam, origin and gamersgate accounts, lumped them together in a file (keepass archives are really handy) and made them unavailable for 4 years so even if I want to get back at gaming I have to do some serious work. and about my games collection of cd's and dvd's I am giving away. If I really want those games I could hit up Gog in 4 years and they propably will be up there :p

So what do you think,

Maybe you should do the same ?
You can live with your habit ?
Or am I stupid and this isn't a solution

Don't know if I keep hanging around here, something to do with locking it all out an such :p
If you procrastinate that badly, what makes you think you're safe without games? Personally, I've procrastinated so much as to skim sites (such as Escapist), watch videos, TV, movies, anything I could that didn't involve working. I'll even stare off into space if I've got nothing to do and don't want to work.

If the games were the only thing holding you back, more power to you. Personally, even without games, I find many ways to waste time.
This. I read, I write and I play games. Even if I were to cut games out of my life for an extended period of time, I'd have a fuckton of other things to keep me from working on anything *except* my thesis.

Self-castigation never worked for me. The key is having an agenda and sticking to it, come what may. Going cold turkey is only useful if you're stuck with a severe case of impending and/or missed deadlines.

Wow, sledgehammer, meet butterfly!

I mean, you know yourself better than any of us, so maybe you know what you're doing. But if it were me, or about 80% of the rest of the population, you just set yourself up to be miserable. If you're trying to find a life without video games, then action like this might be worth it. Otherwise, you will just frustrate yourself whenever you hear someone else talking about the newest awesome game, and you'll get depressed when you won't have your favorite past-time to relax with.

You'll be FAR more happy if you can just try to learn when to say "no" or "enough." If that is too hard for you, just be aware how that is a character flaw you have, and MAKE SURE that you don't end up replacing one uncontrollable vice with a far more damaging one (Alcohol or drugs).

Wait you had to do this in highschool????

If you're playing games so much it's harming your highschool grades then it's probably harming your health as well, perhaps it was a good decision for you.
No Im in Univerity. And it wasn't damaging my health. If there is anything I obsess a little bit over it is my health.

So far I don't miss gaming too much. Finally got the time to do other stuff I wanted to do. That includes stuff I had to do for school so I'm happy I made this decision.

What you say is true, games aren't the only thing holding me back, But they are the biggest timesuckers. At least they were to me. I still find a lot of joy in making music and reading books but I can control those hobbies so much better.

My friend had to do this too. Personally, it boggles my mind. I don't get why you have to uninstall your games to not play them. The absolute lack of willpower blows my mind. I have all my games installed and if I can't play them...I just don't. I don't need to lock my computer in a safe I don't have the key to.
Well what I do is compare it to smoking. Some people quit by smoking less and less. And some do it by quitting and never smoke a cigarette again. Now is gaming not as hazardous as smoking is but if it works for me this way round I'm happy

Im not a psychologist but I think it has a lot to do with your own choice. My dad warned me to do the same thing. He never did though but if you want to game and somebody takes away the possibility you are going to hate the person who took it away.
