I have recently been introduced to a most awesome character, a modest Little guy name "Deadpool". I found about him by accident on TVtropes (i think I was on an article about the 4th wall and it referenced him like every other sentence)and after reading his character page, he sounds like one of the most awesome heroes to ever exist in a comic book.

However, I've got a problem. I know literally NOTHING about the Marvel universe (except what i've read from Marvel Zombies, but something tells me that its hardly canon) so I have no idea about what Deadpool's backstory is, where his story starts, or even what books he's in. I've tried researching online, but there are so many books I literally was overwhelmed by Deadpool's incredible glory.

TL;DR: I just found out about Deadpool, and I want to find some awesome comics of his. I was hoping someone could tell which comics he first shows up in, and then maybe a few of his more epic stories to give me a good intro to Deadpool's story and Universe. BTW I dont really care who else is in each book, I just want to learn about deadpool.

Bonus points if someone helps me find the one where he fights Squirrel Girl

Thanks for any help guys

He fights squirral girl in Deadpool: GLI (Great lakes iniative). He may have fought her earlier in Joe Kelly's run when they were the Lighting Rods, but I can't remember.

Deadpool was (or wasn't depending if you believe T-ray) a mercenary by the name of Wade Wilson, he volunteered for the Weapon X program when he got cancer. He was given a treatment based off Wolverine's blood/DNA (I think they gave him a bone marrow transplant from him amongst thing). He however got no powers. He was thrown in a holding place for failed projects. There they had a bet on who would die first/last or a "deadpool". He became a favourite of a sadistic scientist called Killgrew. Because of this he was expected not to die for a while, but while in there he was visited by the anthromorphic personification of death (more a grim reaper than Neil Gamion-esque). He fell in love with her and wanted therefore to die. He kept taunting the doctor and his sadistic assistant the Attending (a guy with super-powers). This increased his odds for dying, according to the deadpool. Ultimately he was killed but his powers kicked in and gave him the healing factor he has with the side effect of being hideous and have poor sanity.

My advice would be to start with Volume 1 of Deadpool, most of his history and key humour is there. He much like Cable, didn't become an interesting character until out of the clutches of Rob Liefield. Also Cable and Deadpool is pretty darn fantastic (and I don't only say that because Cable is one of my favourite characters).

Most of the comic stores I've been to sell marvel comics encyclopedias, one of those really helps when getting into comics.

The best Deadpool story, in my opinion, is when he buys a pirate ship and hires Bob and some blind girl to be his first mate and navigator.

the issue is in "Deadpool: X marks the spot" which is volume 3 of the new Deadpool line... so yeah, you should go check it out

I suggest trying to find his original comics by Joe Kelley if you want to read on him. Also try the Cable/Deadpool series also.

There, that's the begining of the saga of Deadpool. I'm personally not a fan, but wikipedia helps.

My advice if you just want to know backstory is Wikipedia. For books to read, I would recommend any continuous story you can find. The one that you will probably find the easiest in print is Cable/Deadpool. To my recollection, you don't really need to know a whole lot of his books to understand what is happening.

From what I know, if you want a good amount of Deadpool, there are two series' to look for, Cable/Deadpool and the Deadpool Corps. If you want the backstory, wiki should help, but others have said that already.

I love the issue where he thinks he's Thor.

I started with Cable/Deadpool as my first major foray into the Deadpool world. And as much as I love him, he's getting really overexposed.

Deadpool is awesome, I just finished MVC3 and the credits contained a picture of Deadpool smearing paint on a wall, and I thought, "Oh Deadpool you lovable maniac, what are you doing? There couldn't possibly be any sense to what you are doing, between the insanity and your lack of artistic talent."

But lo', the camera backs up and you can see he has painted a graffiti comic strip on the wall of a building! That's so unbelievably meta! I love it!

So far as I know, Deadpool was just a Weapon X group member with some other engineered/mutant/possibly robot dudes and was never really a main character until recently when some people decided he was cool and Marvel ndulged them

Cable/Deadpool is awesome, but the Deadpool before that is integral to understanding the conflicting motivations of a troubled man torn between selfish profiteering and his conscience. After that, the character mostly just got really dumb. Fun, but dumb. Original Deadpool and Cable/Deapool were actually about something, but quite depressing along with the funny.

As for the origin, just go with whichever one you like best. That seems to be what all the different writers are doing. So long as you keep all the different possibilities in mind, you can just go with the flow of whichever comic you're reading.

The link has a lot of spoilers I think about things Deadpool does. The video I have no idea.

Find Deadpool Classic Trade paper backs. There are currently 4 volumes out. Also can look for Cable/Deadpool (that's really where I started) and the current Deadpool series (just called Deadpool.) Most of the stuff from any of the 3 different versions doesn't really say anything about the older, but you'll find his back story best in Classic. The other stuff is mostly just good story telling and a good capture of the character. Also @WolfThomas his spoiler was pretty accurate. It was KillBrew though, but close enough really. :D
