I've got a couple dead consoles. The old Xbox is...well, I guess I can't quite call it 'dead' since it does work some of the time. But most games it either can't recognize or gets glitched up. And it's always making weird noises. Luckly, I never play it much these days anyways.

Then there's the Genesis. The console itself might be fine for all I know, but I lost the cords and controllers years ago. I'd have to buy some off of Amazon for it to work again, which I see no point in doing thanks to emulation, Virtual Console, and the Sonic Genesis Collection.

Everything else still works though, even the NES works fine 25 years later.
I keep my old consoles in working order for the simple novelty of having them still functioning and playable. Plus, I would much rather play Sonic 3, for instants, on my Genesis even though I have access to free emulators and have the Genesis Collection for 360 (which I only bought because I don't bring my old consoles with me to school).

Oh, back in the day I wanted my own copy of Half-Life. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life_%28video_game%29]

I wanted a copy of Half-Life so badly I went to my Father and asked him, "What task(s) can I perform around the house so that I may earn a minimum of exactly thirty dollars? [http://thebsreport.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/30dollars.gif]"

Being that he had recent felled a stout black locust [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_locust] tree in our back yard and had just finished cutting it into short logs the logical reply I of course received was, "Why son, if you split, haul and stack all of the wood from this tree I figure that will be worth thirty dollars [http://www.ot-inc.com/newsletter/images/30dollars-only.jpg] to me."

A-ha! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvkdYr54f0Y] A goal to smite! I puffed my chest in determination, retrieved the family axe [http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2027/1972191768_02a001f21e.jpg] and set to work.

For two and a half days I labored under the hot unrelenting August sun. Split, haul, stack, split, haul, stack...

Finally my task was done, a two-trunk tree at least seventy feet tall obliterated! With the rewards of my labor in hand I set off to the nearest vendor [http://globalnerdy.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/compusa-whats-in-the-box.jpg] of low-priced electronic entertainment.

To my eternal fortune, this was before most stores started enforcing "No selling 'M' rated games to minors" so I, at the tender age of 13 was able to capture my prize without difficulty.

Oh for several weeks what joy it was! Bashing headcrabs with crowbars! Fleeing from 20 foot tall flame spewing monstrosities! Sneaking past bone-bladed tentacles! Evading every attempt of the military to end me! After having played the game through several times, I discovered and took my first tentative steps into the world of mods. [http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/uss-darkstar-half-life/]

But it was all to be lost soon. For you see, this was in the dark days before the game was patched to make it no longer require the CD to be in the tray to play, and also before my parents had seen fit to procure a CD burner so that backup copies could be created.

With that in mind I had been sharing the joy with a few of my friends down the hill from me. Every few days when I went over I would place my precious data-disc in its polycarbonate container, insert it into the deep pocket of my trusty lab coat [http://www.buylabcoat.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/coat.jpg], and make the journey to their residence via bicycle.

One fateful day when I was returning home from a session well spent hopping platform-to-platform in Xen when by accident my leg pushed the case up and out of my pocket and onto the pavement! At this point the precious round bit carrier was unharmed, but as I bent over to retrieve it tragedy struck.

My coat got stuck on my bicycle and dragged the front tire over the disc which in turn dragged it across the pavement giving it numerous gouges so deep they cut through the metal foil within!

All that work, gone. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SJVP4YAybs&feature=related]

Now my game was unplayable, no one else I knew owned it, and my brother who had introduced me to it some months ago was hundred of miles away at college. [http://www.uidaho.edu/]

It was several months before I finally persuaded him to mail me a burned copy to replace the one I'd foolishly destroyed.

To this day I still have that mangled disc, it is a constant reminder to me of my hubris and the importance of keeping proper backups!

Ok, so my story really wasn't all that bad in the grand scheme of things and there are certainly worse gaming disasters but that's all I've got for you.

OK, While I will mention this, I'm not responsible for damages and to be fair I don't like the method all that much but it has worked for some people and a mate I know too. Youtube up 360 towel fix or something similar. that is if Microsoft cant help ya. I'm just throwing this in there as something that has worked for others. but do this only if you have exhausted all other options!

Actually, now that you mention it, I don't think any one of my consoles has ever broken even once. Honestly, I can't think of a time when any of them did; even my 8-year-old PS2 is running just fine. That's probably just because I'm paranoid with my consoles though.

Sorry to hear about yours though. I would break it in a cool way for kicks and throw it up on YouTube if you have no way of getting it repaired, but that's just me.

Well after my PS3 died for the second time (faulty BluRay drive and now it just YLOD), I thought screw Sony! I'm not spending another $315 on getting it fixed again. So I went out and spent $600 upgrading my PC and then another $89 on a PC copy of MW2.
After about a week I ended up calling PS Support to see what I could do with my now expensive paper weight and they said they'd FIX IT FOR FREE! If only I'd called them first I would have saved all that cash!!

On the plus side I now have a perfectly good PS3 again and a sick PC.

Also, brownie points if you can give me any information on what to do with my now dead console.
Microwave it. Look up the Youtube video "Is it a good idea to microwave an XBox 360?"

I accidentally kicked over my 360 the other day (which has resisted red ringing since I bought it almost 2 years ago) and gouged a scale model of the Panama Canal into my Just Cause 2 disc.

Having only just begun to taste the sweet, sweet nectar of chaos and fungasms that is JC2 (a.k.a. The Sandbox Second Coming), I was distraught.

Moreso to find that my Xbox now had an 'Open Tray' message now, even when a game, any game, was in.

Luckily, I managed to fight off the urge to end it all by hucking myself under a bus, and my gorgeous, wonderful, perfect and amazing wife went all techno-girl on it and got it working again.

As for the disc, well, I took it to get buffed out and it works like brand new now.

It was a harrowing time, but I made it through. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to airlift a bus to drop onto someone from about 3 miles up.

well if it's specifically the red ring and you have the receipt or some other proof of purchase, you're still under warranty and can get your xbox replaced at the cost of shipping.

One day I was playing some shooter on the DS. I was near the end of the last level when the L1 button stopped working. As the L1 button was the shoot button, and as such, is rather important in a shooter, I switched to Lefty mode. A few minutes later, the R1 button died.

Never finished that goddamn game.

And I still use my PS2 quite often. It's one of the original models, none of that slimline rubbish.

When next gen consoles are as reliable as the old ones, I might consider buying one.

If it's still under warranty, if you still have the opportunity to get it repaired like other users suggested, go for it. Otherwise, I say take it apart (I've always loved doing that, to see what's inside things, how they work). And then recycle it. =) Good luck!

As for my own "worst gaming situtation"?... Well, I've been pretty lucky on that front so far, the worst I've had to live through are CTDs, BSODs, and impromptu reboots. Or the GPU dying without prior notice. Nothing I couldn't handle or that would've made me want to chuck the PC out the window... =)

Heh, my friend Dave once chucked a tower onto his porch, in the middle of winter, then poured Mountain Dew in the now-visible innards, all because he was playing X-Com and he kept BSOD'ing.

The best part? After the rage died down, he brought it inside, hit it with the blow-dryer, and bingo, it worked perfectly. No more BSOD.

I was like.... o_O

I got my super nintendo in 1991. It still works.
I got my nintendo 64 in 1996. It still works.

Nintendo 64 was the last console I bought.

Why are you new generations wasting money on ps3's/xbox360's that die in 1-3 years?? These systems do not last. They are built with planned obsolescence: a short lifespan by design.

It amazes me that so many people actually buy products that are intentionally built to fail. Somehow this boosts sales and demand, somehow it works. For the life of me I can't explain how/why this works without coming to the conclusion that the majority of consumers are retarded, lazy, easily fooled, superstitious, and/or ignorant.

I build PCs with proper ventilation and cooling, using durable thermal adhesive and soldering, components and materials that can perform at specification for an extended period of time without failing or degrading. I spend an extra $100 to ensure the system I make will last a very long time.

If you open the xbox360 up and look at it, it's a cheap POS. When the xbox 360 came out in 2005, I built a PC that was more powerful. This PC still works. And it will still be working 10 years from now.

You're only sold cheap stuff because you continue to buy it. Remember that.
Well, you make me a durable 360 for the same price I can go out and buy a new one for, and you got yourself a deal.

Otherwise, accept that not everyone is a computer/electronics genius and some of us have to take what we're given. If we didn't buy it, you know what would happen? No more people would make them, as they didn't sell. It's not like Sony or MS are going to call a meeting and say, "Gee, no one seems to be buying our consoles. Maybe we should make a more expensive, super durable one. Yeah, that's the ticket!".

And like I said in my earlier post, my 2+year 360 only gimped because I kicked it over, not because of shoddy manufacturing. And it was an easy fix for my techno-wife.

I feel where you're coming from, but I sense a bit of PC elitism. I could be wrong, but hey, I calls 'em like I sees 'em.
