I'm American, so can someone please explain the whole gypsy thing? Is it kinda like the illegal immigrant thing we have going on in California?

I don't know mate. There's a huge amount of travelers and settled travelers in my town, and I haven't met many respectable ones (and even out of those, some have quite poor opinions of women). Maybe he's different, but just be sure to stay in frequent contact with her.
He is highly respectable, and he wouldn't even hurt a fly. He really isn't the whole stereotypical traveller you would think he is.

Maybe he is quite different from the norm, but he is a very nice guy, and believe you me, I tend to judge quite a lot.
He probably is, it's that with the reputation they have in the community I live in it's hard to tell whether it's a cultural thing, or if it's just people pointing out extreme cases. I've had my fair share of encounters with some, but I've also taken a lot of sh*t off settled folk. Sorry, I've made this way too personal. Anyway, point is I'm probably conditioned to mistrust them, so take anything I say with a pinch of salt.
Exactly, every social group have their idiots, and gypsies aren't an exception to this rule.

It's just my prejudice for them has been lifted, by my new fond respect for their way of life.

Nobody doubts that your sister's boyfriend is a nice guy and a decent human being, but all that proves is that being a traveller doesn't physically prevent you from being a good person. Which...yeah, fuck-a-doodle-doo. It's not "prejudice" when there is ample proof from anybody's perspective that most of the stereotypes are true to some extent. Hell, I'm the kind of person predisposed to come down on the side of the minority in any debate, but there's no arguing with the facts.

Oh, and that sense of community? Yeah, most groups who treat people outside their circle like shit have that. It's what England (and humanity as a whole) needs less of.

When I read topic I was expecting to read about how your sister was wisked away by a dude who travels around the world getting into adventures and finding lost and ancient artifacts while punching out some evil people. humph

And my sister is getting married soon too. Weird.
Holy shit!

Two people in a world of over six billion have sisters that are both getting married within a similar timeframe?!

What are the chances of that, eh?!
Stop the presses!

This. Seriously I was so disappointed this was just a crying thread for the OP to argue with everyone who didn't offer the specific advice he already had in his head and was fishing for =(

Would have been way cooler if it was a guy with a handle bar mustache in a giant balloon

So communities aren't a good thing? feeling like you belong to a certain group doesn't make you feel good? Look at bronies for example, they have a community of people who are fans of the show, would you take that away from them?

It's just human spirit at the end of the day. I know it's a bit different, but the same rules apply.

I really don't like travelers... In the modern sense of the word anyway.

It's like America when it was owned by the British.

Britain "Okay, happy Christmas, no more taxes for a while!"
America "Hell yeah! But screw you! Keep your tea, we will always hate you!"

10 years later

Britain "Okay, enjoy your no taxes for a while? Well, I'll just reinstate a few, and you don't have to pay them if you really don't want to"
America "FUUUUUU, REBELLIONNNNNNSJAKFADJFKDSK"

No, communities are not automatically a good thing. They're just a thing. Bronies are a positive community - they're people with a shared interest having fun. Some communities are not positive. Regardless of how good and cuddly being in a community may be, it doesn't offset loathsome actions and attitudes on the behalf of the people belonging to it. It just provides a handy excuse to say "you just don't understand" when people have a reasonable complaint.

As an American who has no idea about the whole Gypsie thing, this thread seems very inflammatory. We've had tons of threads about people hating on prejudiced groups, and now we have this thread that says that all Gypsies are sexist and steal to live.

This reminds me of comments that people make about Mexicans here in the US.

I'm sure you have very good reasons to say these things, but maybe you shouldn't make it seem so unfairly prejudiced.

freaks who dodge paying council taxes
my problem is that they seem to be above the law! the police are always scared to move against them no matter how much the rob and generally ruin local communities. anyone else would be imprisoned for the things they get away with.

and they don't. pay. council. tax. for that alone, don't see why they should ever receive NHS care, police protection, fire & rescue, etc. they are a total drain on society, on an equal par with benefit thieves.

personal opinion, obviously. i REALLY try and avoid stereotyping as best as i can, but they just REALLY get on my nerves.

When people say "gypsy", they're generally talking about either Romano Gypsies - basically the Gyptians in His Dark Materials - or they're talking about Irish Travellers. Brad Pitt played a Traveller in Snatch.

Travellers used to travel from town to town repairing and selling metal goods or other crafts - hence the now derogatory nickname "tinkers". They also breed dogs and horses. They have their own independent culture and their own language.

However, since their traditional work is drying up, Travellers don't really travel as much as they used to. They've also managed to pick up a reputation for sexism, violence, thievery, disdain for "outsiders" and poor hygiene, and for illegally setting up semi-permanent camps on private or government-owned land. I doubt it's in the news in California, but currently a very old and famous Traveller "halting site", Dale Farm, has had bailiffs attempt to evict Travellers who are apparently living outside the agreed boundaries of the site.

I hope I helped - back to Starcraft commentaries for me.

've never had nor heard of a positive experience with travellers, If they were to pay tax and obey the law, many (myself included) would not have a problem with them, it's just that i've never met one that i could describe as either "pleasent" or "a decent human being".

That's what I'm saying. I mean, here if we say black people and mexicans are all drug sellers and gang members, we instantly sound like prejudiced idiots. But this gypsy hate seems real normal.
