This isn't reddit. We're not Notch's personal internet army.
One can NEVER be sure. Irrational creatures of ancient past know as "Fanboys" can be conjured by the forbiden word. A word that they believe, it will make their god really sad.
OOOH What's the word?

I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. This could just be a small bug that will be fixed in the major update that brings all of the snapshots together.

I still can't play since Minecraft refuses to run with Java 7.
All of my sadness

There is a mod called optifine that GREATLY increases performance. It won't do anything for your networking woes, but somebody finally did what Notch was unwilling to do and sanitized the graphics engine.

You can't uninstall 7 and reinstall Java 6 instead?
I tried that. Several times. I've also scoured the internet for help and any threads I find all claim 6 update 32 is perfect for Minecraft. Only problem...6 is at 33 and refuses to work for me as well.

The new snapshot with the "Open to LAN" feature forces you to essentially run a server in the background.
Mojang knows about this being a problem and is working on it - they said as much on their website [http://www.mojang.com/2012/06/minecraft-snapshot-week-25/].

We?re still focusing on bug fixing so we eventually can release the 1.3 patch. The biggest problem right now is that since the game is hosting a server in the background, the game requires more hardware resources than before. We?re trying to figure out a way to solve that, but here?s a weekly snapshot for now
Unfortunately it cannot really be fixed. They added a component to the game that is very resource demanding. Essentially, the system requirements to the game have gone way up from what they were before. If you were getting 20 or so FPS, you are probably getting 5-10 now. Which some may consider unplayable. Bare in mind, I am one of those that can now not play MC; I can run games like Team Fortress 2 just fine, but Minecraft now lags like nobodies business, and I've gone through every tutorial and system tweak necessary to get my system running at optimum capacity. Now, you cannot use optifine with snapshots, but I doubt it will help that much. I believe the problem is memory related (some 500 mb or so increase in memory requirement). And optifine only decreases the work load of your GPU, I believe.

My point is they may be able to get it to run a little better, but basically people who previously could run the game fine, now need to upgrade to continue playing or use an older version of the game and -not- update it. Kinda sucky, but not yet too big of a problem if you want to play around with mods and just stick with an old version of the game.

It's incredibly unlikely that you're suffering lag in single player. You may be getting crappy frame rates but that isn't lag. I hate it when people misuse that term.
Its actual lag:

1)I destroy a block but the resourse takes a few seconds to appear.

2)Even opening a chest takes time for the interface to appear.

3)Enemies take a while to "register" a hit

4)And of course, any attempt of facing a Creeper with hit and run tactics its useless

In short, it still lag, not the "jump cut" kind of way that crappy frame rates do.
Fair enough, I'm glad I only said it was incredibly unlikely, not impossible ;)

So it can or cannot be fixed? i mean, on the Mojang side, they added this in such a way that trying to take it out is going to affect the entire game? I dont know about Java so my logic may sound like you can just plug-unplug certain parts like they were Lego blocks and nothing bad is going to happen, but in reality may be more complicated like trying to play Jenga and the thing is about to collapse.

In short, i wonder if this was such a VITAL component to the game rather than just giving an IP to a friend and use the seed of single player.

I wonder how can one "misuse" something as different of each other like lag and framerates?
