EDIT: I don't think either are as severe as what happened in Japan.

Except the problem with that analogy is that flooding is relatively regular on the mississippi and rivers are supposed to flood. It is how we get alluvial farmland and the Delta that those people built houses on. An Earthquake, while natural as well, has other more immediate side effects.
I do agree though, the floods in the mississippi delta are rather being overshadowed in the world media, but I think the problem is that there have been so many big news stories in the last few weeks that a relatively small scale crisis has been overlooked.

People like Anime a lot, clearly Spain hasn't provided enough entertainment for the world to care. Although I'd say it's more likely due to the significantly smaller death count, that many people can die in an average car accident.

German red cross has a donation hotline, german THW (i guess that acronym translates to "technical help organization") is already down there. German military also helps out and from what i've seen there are quite a lot of people with different flags on their arms.

It's not like the spaniards are left hanging there. The german thw had quite a lot of cases where they needed to assess the situation thoroughly in order to help without damaging more then absolutely necessary. Build this big waterpurification thingy there? Will the floor hold or would we shatter the thing and have another few days without clean water?

They basically find out how to help and that may take some time.
In Japan it was "easier". In spain they're asking if the buildings will withstand the drilling of a well, in japan you don't drill a well, you have to get water elsewhere, which costs a lot of money.

So in Japan, you know you're going to need a shitload of money.
In spain, any large donation drive may result in there being much more money then they needed and the next donation drive will by far not as successful.


The people there will need some time to evaluate if they'll bother People with another call for donations. It may sound cruel, but we don't care too much about people we don't know.

People will grow tired if there are too many calls for donations and will stop donating altogether.

So again, help has arrived in spain. They are pretty much looking if they need more money badly enough.

2nd EDIT: Before people get less capable of understanding words I'm not saying this is a bigger, more damaging, or more fatal earthquake. I'm pointing out that no one has apparently even noticed that an earthquake happened somewhere that wasn't Japan, just like New Zealand.

It's because Japan was hit with a MASSIVE earthquake, a MASSIVE tsunami and it nearly caused a meltdown of several nuclear plants. It's kinda like comparing someone falling from 5th floor and breaking every bone in their body, crushing a few organs to boot and being near death to a kid falling off a bike.

Don't make these stupid comparisons - pretty please. If you care about something that happened, put a link, explain what happened. There is ALWAYS someone who cares, there are organizations to help out people with shit like this, you can always donate to help. Look for one, link to it, start a discussion if you will, but don't compare incomparable situations and insinuate how people are hypocrites.

Oi, the Japanese earthquake was ridiculously strong, and killed a thousand times as many people as this one you linked to. I come from a community where tornadoes hit constantly, so I'm not saying even a localized natural disaster isn't still devastating and disastrous, but frankly, comparing the Spanish and Japanese earthquakes is just . . . insulting.

I found out about the earthquake in Spain when I went to Wikipedia, which tells me three things.

1) I found out that Spain can get earthquakes.
2) Wikipedia had become a better source of information than the news.

... Are you living under a rock? The death toll for the one in Spain is about 10. It's estimated to be well over 10,000 in Japan, and a nuclear disaster came about because of it. Are you being sarcastic and failing or did you really just not understand how bad it was in Japan?

EDIT: For the record, I'm 100% for helping Spain out... but there are priorities, so they're going to get less help then Japan.
