...is this something that PS3 owners are excited about?

Mass Effect 2 is regarded as one of the top-tier games on the 360, as well as the PC, but PS3 owners may have never experienced it.

In January, though, Mass Effect 2 will be available for PS3, and owners will finally be able to see what all the fuss has been about.

However, the Mass Effect series has been built from the ground up as a trilogy. And while it's fairly obvious now Mass Effect 3 will see a multi-platform release (with perhaps a similar window of exclusivity), it's been made apparent that the original game will not be made available on PS3.

Does this affect at all your desire to pick up ME2? One of the biggest draws to the game is the way it so deeply integrates your choices in the first game into its own story and environment.

Do you think they should renege and release the first game? Or will you just be happy to be playing it at all?

I heard something about Microsoft owning the rights to 1 so apparently I heard that in the start of the ps3 version you will play through the most important parts of 1 to see whats going on. (though don't quote me on this becuase I don't know how creditable it is.)

Yes, since Microsoft published Mass Effect (unlike ME2, which was published by EA), they hold the rights to it and obviously have no plans to hand it over to the PS3.

That would be an interesting was of handling the "just so you know what's going on" problem, if not the most elegant. I'm anxious to see what BioWare comes up with.

I have very little desire to go out and buy this anyway. I played Mass Effect 1 for about an hour, got bored stupid and turned it off. If number 2 is anything like it then count me out.

I'm not actually that excited about it, to be honest. I played it on my friend's 360 and though that it was just meh. It probably wasn't helped by the fact that he gushed about it like it had descended from mount olympus. So no, I'm not excited because it was/is overhyped.

Most PS3 owners also have Windows PCs, so it's not like PS3 owners haven't played it, they just haven't played it on PS3.

I'm more inclined to give it a rent now, but not really excited. I have the 360 version of Mass Effect 1 (bought in a buy 1 get 1 sale for cheap), played a short bit and was turned off by the combat and probably just was not in the frame of mind, but I have not bothered to pick it up again. If Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 has some sort of "intro to" or tie in that helps pick up despite not playing the first, as it is not on the PS3, then more the reason I may give it a shot if its gameplay is improved. Otherwise, I don't have a lot of time to play games so going through massive amounts of dialog just isn't something I have the ability to do often enough unfortunately.

No, it's vastly different from Mass Effect 1. Nearly every aspect of the game has improved.

I bought the second one for the 360 without playing the first one, so if I only had a ps3 I'd definitely pick it up.

The first game bored me to tears.

I HATED it.
But, because I trust all of my fellow Escapists so much, I'm going to pick up number 2 once it hits the bargain bin.

Well Its not like if you have a PS3 you couldn't have played Mass Effect 2. I did, I borrowed my buddies Xbox. So yes, I am very excited.

Could care less, I've found every game I've played by Bioware to be overhyped and lackluster at best.

If I hadn't already bought it for my PC and didn't own my Xbox, I'd be pissed off. It's just them being a bunch of pricks that they aren't releasing the first one as well. Make a $80.00 box set or something that comes with both games. That's just them being petty.

Had it for my 360, and you PS3 owners aren't missing much (imo). It's good for 1 real playthrough, after that you only go back for the reverse of the moral path you chose (renegade or paragon), and if it interests you, then you can do the opposite gender as well. The combat isn't amazing enough to make it that great, and if it weren't for the story ME2 wouldn't have any legs to stand on. I did like the characters, but once you've played the game to the end you know them inside and out, and repeat playthroughs just feel repetetive.

Don't get me wrong, it's a blast the first time through, but later playthroughs left me disappointed.

Yes I will get it. I am a big fan of Bioware RPG's and the Mass Effects are the only ones I haven't played (don't have a 360 and my PC can't run it). I just hope they make sure to add on something that explains the first. Something that isn't a cutscene.
