What do you think of it? I remember making an impressions thread after E3 and most were skeptical of whether or not ND were being truthful when they said the game is not scripted like Uncharted is.

Here is two versions of the same level

And they are lying, of course it's scripted they just(hopefully) make it flow enough with the gameplay that you aren't bothered by it.
Which is actually the holly grail of how it should be done, "scripted" is a bad word when it hinders your interaction, then it soon becomes like nails on chalkboard.

Thanks. I got used to other forums lol

Its not. They showed the same 4 enemies in both gameplay videos but the way you can take them down depends on how you approach the situation. The endings of the fights ended radically differently. The first had him blow the guys head off with a shotgun and the second had a guy try to take him down with a molotov

Well... saying it's "not scripted" is... false. I mean, I know what they mean, and to most people "not scripted" means what the devs want them to think it means. But still... things are happening a certain way. It's scripted. The scripts are just (supposedly) really good and allow for a much more dynamica much better word and more appropriate but less "buzz"y for some reason experience.

So yeah, "not scripted" as in "not completely, unchanging, static events".

I think it should be noted on what exactly this "not scripted" term means. Every video game is program to do something and to react in all predicted situations. The storyline, mechanics, levels, and AI are planned and programmed to react in ways the devs find suitable. Without programming aka scripting then not much will happen and is up to the player to entertain themselves.

The AI can direct many things including characters and modular level pieces. What appears to be boasted here by Naughty Dog is that the AI will be designed to respond to alot more situations not commonly seen before in real-time.

In short, this looks mostly like context awareness is being used with set pieces designed for majority of possible paths and actions. These have to be scripted but are dynamically chosen and tracked by the game.

At least, that's how I see it. I'm no expert but it's not too far-fetched as it is a simple yet complex idea.

The games that make the best use of scripting do it like this - they give you a set of skills and tools, and leave it up to you to navigate the obstacle course by applying those skills and tools correctly. You still end up where the story wants you to be, but maybe you handled the journey there differently than someone else.

THAT is how games should be.
I gotta say to me that sounds a lot like Uncharted 2, but removing the quota of killing every baddy to move forward.

The Last of Us may not be as open-world or is far away from being as such, but I think we're in good hands as far as experiencing the gameplay goes as long as their multiple paths as well as different ways of execution.

I was at a Last of Us presentation during Gamescom and what they showed there was also different. It was a slightly more stealthy approach and some scenes like the one with the brick to the face didnt happen.

God, I hate that fucking girl!

I can already tell I'm not going to enjoy this game thanks to that smart ass Ellen Page routine.

Hmmm, someone doesn't like a certain actor. Can't win them all.

But I have a tip for you. Never judge a game by their character if their characters bug you. I love God of War 3 very much even though I hate GoW3's Kratos.

Well obviously it is scripted to a degree, but I'm liking how seamless the dynamic interaction with the AI is looking. Oh course we won't truly know how dynamic this behaviour is until players themselves get to play through a section for themselves.

If we're talking about the nuts and bolts of the game (UI, textures, models, animations, levels, lighting, physics, AI), than one could say, rightly, that the whole game is 'scripted', although perhaps 'coded' would be a better term. But a game has to have every last portion of it 'coded'. An AI can't do anything if it has no protocols to follow, and thus requires numerous scripts to tell it what to do in certain situations. By scripted, I think you guys mean scripted as in like a movie, where the same characters do the same thing every time, which isn't the case.

The AI is certainly following scripts, but they don't say 'Do this every time when the player appears.' They say instead 'If the player does this, do this, but if he does this, do something else entirely.' This adds an element of 'randomness' and change to each play-through. Perhaps there are scripts that randomly choose different AI spawns and weapon load outs. Again, scripted, but not in the way you think.

I'm not really too bothered about the whole scriptedness issue. As you can tell by my avatar I absolutely love Asura's Wrath and that game is practically as on-rails as you can get. If it looks like I'm going to enjoy the game (which given these two gameplay demos, is a resounding YES) then I'll look out to buy it (unless multiple scathing reviews advise me otherwise). Should be a lot of fun and I had a blast with the Uncharted series so here's hoping it's another win from Naughty Dog

Yeah, but Kratos is supposed to be hated (in GoW3 anyway).

This girl you're supposed to care about and risk your life for, and... no. Not with the whole mature for her age, smartmouth attitude.

The game actually looks pretty damn good though.

Yeah, I sat watching that video last night thinking that next year can't get here soon enough. With The Last of Us, Watch dogs and Remember Me, next year is looking pretty damn good already.

I'm pretty sure it is scripted. Like when you run out of bullets the girl will distract the enemies or something. The entire thing isn't scripted but when A happens I'm guessing it has a chance to trigger B or C scripted events.

Then again I haven't looked into it so I'm just guessing after watching the clips. I'm not that excited, it looks nice but it's not fantastical enough for me.
