Never quite understood the amount of hate TAA gets.
Well he tends to harshly insult people when he disagrees with their opinions. He also holds some controversial opinions which combined with what I've said first leads to quickly escalating "mud fights".
Last but not least he had some let's say rather shady business going on in which he apparently collected several thousand dollars of donations for certain purposes then never delivered promised goods such as videos.

Personally I think people take him too serious. I can't claim that I've followed all his ?exploits? but to me his videos are mostly entertainment. He is making some good points in some of his videos and I like it when someone brushes aside ?political correctness? to blatant speak his mind as long as he has some good arguments and it presented in an entraining way to me.

Really?
So everyone at e.g. Channel Awesome is scum? Uhm John Lajoie and RazorFist also scum?
Now that is just grand... you know these people have at least the dignity to show their face and/or have easily researchable names while insulting other people, their opinions, views or work.

I just feel I need to say, just because someone is biased that doesn't make them wrong. A bias is just an inclination to think a certain way. I am biased against appeals to emotion, I fucking hate them, that in no way means an appeal to emotion is a valid argument.

It's just in your last paragraph it sounds like you where saying "I'll believe the person who is the least biased." I might be wrong and that might not have been what you meant, but that's a fallacy. Bulverism I think.

If someone is determined to dislike a group they are obviously going to latch on to the most unpleasant members of that group. Unfortunately some members of the group who are tired of getting harrassed direct their blame at the wrong targets, pointing at the unpleasant members and saying "you're giving us all a bad name!" No, it's the people who are determined to generalise and refuse to educate themselves who are giving you a bad name. People don't hate feminism/ christianity/ atheism because of the unpleasant members of the group. People use the unpleasant members to support their confirmation bias after deciding they hate feminism/ christianity/ atheism.

Yes, this is definitely a thing I actually believe.

Wow.

Of course one person represents the whole group. I mean, I represent the entire group of people who picked "Vegosiux" as their Escapist nickname.

Ehmmmm, when I say "You're giving us all a bad name" I generally mean someone who's in the same group I am. In this particular instance, it's not Anita Sarkeesian that is giving "my group" a bad name, it's The Amazing Atheist. Because, as an atheist, I am appalled at his antics. I do not wish to have him seen as a representative of my position.

EDIT: Hah! I actually just managed to find a second meaning in your post, and it makes sense that way too, and I see what you mean.

But (now this is a reply to OP), hey I get to slap a Schlock Mercenary comic up here for the second time today, woo! Note that last panel.

Not that I thought his "refutation" was particularly impressive.
He said certain things to a rape victim which, out of sensitivity to the subject matter that was being discussed at the time, I will put under a spoiler tag. You may need to take a shower after reading them:

/Devil'sAdvocateOn

Her first mistake was putting anything even remotely personal out there into the interwebs to be used against her.

Telling others you're a rape victim is inviting shit like what you have spoilered, it's the internet. What was she expecting out of this bastion of hate/racism/sexism/etc. we all love so much?

If the guy is an asshole, you don't give him ammo.

Amazing Atheist doesn't represent all atheists (and God help us all if he did, irony intended) but he's the exact kind of atheist that gives other atheists a bad name.

It's been said here before but I just need to repeat it, the things he said to that rape victim just...ah, it infuraites me. Not so much that he said it but that he just gets away with it and acts like nothing happened. The fact that he has a massive subscriber base who probably don't even know about it.
Someone who said the things he said has NO right whatsoever to talk about women's rights and feminism.

Apart from that he's just a dick in general, his basic tactic is yell really loudly at the camera and swear a lot. He may not represent all atheists but he's certainly giving them a bad name.

The Amazing Atheist is a horrible person. Anita Sarkeesian is not.

Of course they don't represent an entire group but you don't see people swarming in mass to disagree with TJ.

Woah man, that's rather harsh. Are you just talking about people who talk about politics, or just every person on Youtube in general? I can think of two Youtubers who appear on camera rarely that talk about videogames and that seem like really nice people (Heir of Carthage and Epicnamebro). Calling them scum is ridiculous.

Anyway, on topic.

Pretty much what has been said already: the loudest are always seen as the spokespeople for a group of people no matter how numerous those loud individuals are due to them being able to say the most. Not helping is that those who are less radical and vocal don't say much due to what I think is fear of backlash from whoever doesn't like what they're saying. Doesn't matter that they're less radical, just that they take a similar side with those who are radical. So of course those voices are never heard, and instead the loudest are only heard due to being the only voices out there.

I spend most of my time fruitlessly trying to remind people that people do not represent groups unless those groups have officially stated that their members represent them.

While I agree with most of what Anita says, she and I belong to two different schools of feminism (she's pro-gender roles, and I'm anti-gender roles), and we also have different views on the subject of violence in the media.

On the other hand, I have exceedingly little in common with TAA, other than the fact that we're both atheists. And cisgender males, I suppose.

Why do some people hate TAA so much? I have yet to see a good reason. I don't care that he insulted someone on the internet. I mean it's the internet lol.

Or are the haters just religious people?
