I hate to mention it in yet another thread because I feel like I'm going to come across as a shill but NEStalgia is a decent game that is free to play. But I'd say looking up "NEStalgia MMO" to find the trailer on YouTube would do a better job of explaining the game than I could on this little sleep.

I know exactly what you mean... the RPG genre has felt pretty dried up for a while, but I would suggest as previously suggested NWN, it has an endless sea of great fan-made modules.

otherwise, perhaps NOX? not quite an RPG if u ask me but similar in style and still very enjoyable.

Divine Divinity if you haven't already tried it, kind of diablo like but with more character focus. and it has a great soundtrack ^_^

Bioware only made one bad decision in my opinion. And that was dumbing DA2 for consoles and not really developing it long enough to make it good. Dragon Age: Origins is a traditional PC RPG and it was released in 2009. Bioware will make more games like that because it's core fanbase are RPG fans.

Nope, not according to the statements they've made in public surrounding their first DA2 DLC pack, which essentially say; if you think this DLC is going to make this into DA:O2, you might as well just sod off, because we'd rather cater to people who're scared of numbers, and that's our plan for the foreseeable.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a look at the indie games. And perhaps kyogen is right, maybe I do just play games too much :p

And Lawn; dude, I'm not -that- young, I owned a NES nevermind a Genesis :p

Sorry, but mainstream RPGs have moved on from what you seem to want. Personally I feel they're a great improvement on the old games, especially with regards to Bioware. I do still get the itch to play classic style RPGs every now and again however, and for that I turn to Indie games. You're either going to have to get on-board with changes to the RPG genre, or you're going to have to get over the desire for modern day graphics, otherwise you're not going to have any choice at all.

If you choose to move on, do try playing Mass Effect and the like. In my opinion they keep everything that was great about the classic RPGs (choices, dialogue, setting, characters, story etc...), and only lose the stuff that wasn't so great.

If you really feel the stats and turn-based combat were the important parts of the game then there is still a variety of games available, just without the current-gen graphics. I'd say Spiderweb Software [http://www.spidweb.com/] is the best for this myself, particularly the Geneforge series. You just have to realise that you can't have fancy graphics with this kind of game, these days it's too much of a niche genre.

And if you choose neither... well... it sucks to be you I'm afraid. AAA-companies just don't make that kind of game any-more.

They said the DLC was targeted for the people that liked DA2 so don't except a sudden DA:O 2 but devs have made certain to the fans that they are NOT ruling out the idea that the franchise might take another new direction.

It makes sense. Did you honestly think Bioware would change up the core changes of DA2 in a DLC?

Also have you played Legacy? It really isn't that bad. ;)

Should I just accept that my favourite genre is a thing of the past, and turn into that guy at the local tabletop store who mumbles about how much better things used to be.
Honestly, yes.
The oldies are gone and not coming back, that is just how this goes, the world moves on for better or worse.

And don't expect too much of think Deus Ex because their main focus is the console market.

I've actually heard pretty good things about the game from people who have a....."played the game"(you might know what I mean). From what I've heard it is better than invisible war, and emphasizes the "multiple solutions/routes" that made the first game so good.

If this turns out to be true, we should praise good design even if it is on consoles. Hopefully other developers will pick up on the ambitious designs of old games that were left aside for sheer presentation.

Nah, they definitely took the time to customize it for the PC...it's not going to be just a shitty port. In fact, it seems like the PC was the central platform for development. Has DirectX 11 with all the goodies, and I don't know how they're going to do weapon switching on the consoles with the entire number row used...
They're probably going to use some sort of weapon reel or the D-pad.
Like every other game with more than 2 weapons.

You can't expect from a DLC to fix a shit game.

There are videos of leaked demo on YouTube. It looks amazing. Inventory screed and GUI is very intuitive and every PC gamer should be happy with it. Multiple paths are there and choices as well. Shooting looks like a lot of fun, sneaking looks even more fun (and that will be my choice) and yes, it supports Dx11 with tessellation and whatnot. Overall, it looks like PC was the primary target. I even heard that enemy AI will be enhanced on PC because of mouse and keyboard setup.

I'd like to echo what someone said about Sacred 2. If you can get it to run, it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in a RPG in years.
