So it's alright for Sony to expect everyone to have a smart TV, but Microsoft can't assume everyone has a smart phone? These double standards, people. It's really not cool.

The PS3 was advertised as a media centre, I know people who bought just for those streaming capabilities. For sony (and consumers) to just turn around and complain at Microsoft when they try the same tactic, and let Sony off the hook when they start stopping features that made the PS3 so popular, is just hipocritacle. Take a step back and look at the initial PS3 marketing. It was ident ucle to the XBone right now. And it never had to deal with Hal of the shit people are lambasting MS for.

I'm all up for competition, but when consumers start doing the marketing for those brands, it's no wonder these companies think they can get away with doing what ever they want.
I don't have a smart TV, I just used a cable and connected my TV to my PC like a monitor, no smart TV necessary. I didn't buy the PS3 for streaming, I bought it for games and so did most people. I've not seen the initial PS3 marketing as we don't get console or video game ads on TV here and I use Adblock on my PC. Most people blasting the Xbone did it for the DRM policies they had (I haven't payed attention to the rest as I'm not getting an Xbone, never wanted one before you ask)

It's a bit of a shame losing the media server feature for those that use it, but it was rare that the damn thing wasn't a slow stuttering mess for me so I stopped using it a while back. I'm not bothered to see it go personally since getting it to work properly was a kick in the nuts.

I find gamer rage to be quite hilarious. The Xbox One gets a lot of hate for advertising itself as a multimedia platform rather than a gaming platform. The PS4 gets hate for removing multimedia functions while focusing on being a gaming platform.

Honestly, this isn't a big loss for me. While it's practical I don't really need these functions and I think I have used it a grand total of 3 times. My blu-ray player does the same thing, but with a wider support of codecs. Seriously, I can play mkv files from an external drive if I want.
To be fair there isn't really a major rage against this, more confusion as alot of it really doesn't make sense, especially the no external storage. Only reason I can think of is to prevent copying the recordings from your games so you have to upload them to twitch but that's A) stupid as people have the right to put their footage where they want, and B) cuts out the option of backing up your HDD incase it fails or you want to upgrade. I'm hoping this is more of a "not on release" rather than never thing as the external HDD is rather useful from a gamers perspective.

The PS3 supports the video and audio codecs of an MKV but just not the container itself. You can remux the video and audio stream of a MKV into a MP4 (no converting whatsoever, just pure copying and it only takes a couple minutes to do) and the PS3 will play it just fine, I do it all the time, the only issue is with foreign language stuff as MP4 doesn't support subtitle tracks. AVI, MKV, MP4, etc. are containers, not codecs.
Yeah, I am aware that mkv is a container, but still, my blu-ray player got a wider support for codecs and it can recognize mkv files. I wasn't really clear on that point. However my point was that it's more convenient since things work directly from the drive with subtitles already. It's easy to make these things work with the PS3, but it's even easier with my blu-ray player and it also does a better job of it. Still, thanks for the advice though.

Yeah, there isn't major rage here (also the major rage against the Xbox wasn't just about it being a multimedia device), but there's still some delightful hypocrisy here. Basically we want a gaming console with multimedia features, but we don't want it to be called a multimedia system. Those other issues you mentioned... yeah, those are in fact annoying and as you said, pretty silly. Restrictions for the sake of restriction.

My opinion is this: I expected this to happen, they removed the other OS option in the PS3 right?

So long as the ability to play games isn't compromised, then I could care less.
So you do care then. Or maybe you want to say could not care less.

And I have no clue what they are. I just read an article on Kotaku explaining that the PS4 is losing some kind of "media server" support or something like that. I began to think to myself "Should I be sad and ashamed that I have no clue what they are talking about?" I have a PS3 myself, but I use it like I would think a "normal" person would. For video games almost exclusively. No photos, no music, and only the occasional youtube visit when my friends are over and we want to watch dorkly or honest trailers or the like. Does it suck that the PS4 is losing apparently a cool feature? Yes. Do I really care? No. So for the discussion then. Am I weird for not using my consoles as for all this other crap and pretty much only using them for video games like they were originally made to do? At least I think they were. Things seem to be changing. Also what do you think about it? Here's a link to the article.

I have to admit I have no idea what that is either, I, like yourself am one of the (apparently endangered) group who want a games console rather than some "integrated" gizmo (yes, I did just use the word gizmo without any irony). But hey if it's one less thing that I don't use anyway and that I won't now be nagged to update 10 times a month you can paint be exstatic about it.

I'm bothered by it! I didn't have the problems you talked about either though. My PS3/PC team kicks so much ass. I have my PC in my room acting as a server. One HDD for music/ pictures, One for movies and my SSD for the OS and such. Then I have my pS3 is in the living room streaming my music, movies and pictures with ease. It is very handy.

-But
I actually decided to wait and spend my hard earned cash on the Machine from Steam. It's going to be so wicked. The only thing that sucks is no Killzone 4. I think I have had enough of Killzone though.

I dont see the issue with no media server and MP3 thing... an old laptop, or PC serves as a far better media box or there are tons of other ways to get music to a TV if thats your thing. I have speaker systems through out the house to take care of that for music. I like game sounds and game music coming out of the speakers on the TV when gaming and thats it.
