So the team behind Starbound (see here: http://playstarbound.com/ ), which I believe includes the original main artist from Terraria, have just raised $1,000,000 in pre-orders for the game through their own website, without any crowdfunding services such as Kickstarter or IndieGogo. They have over 41k "backers" at the moment.
Clearly, people are excited, and I'm currently wondering what factors are at play behind their success. Terraria "nostalgia" seems unlikely, since Terraria is only a few years old and is even now gearing up for a new update. Starbound hasn't been getting a huge amount of press, either - a bit here and there, sure, but nothing like the attention afforded to major indie titles like Fez or FTL.
So what is driving their success? Any ideas?
